Seasonal variation of the physicochemical conditions of streams plays an important role in aquatic insect diversity and community structure. Asian tropical streams profoundly change between seasons due to the effects of monsoons. However, little is known about how these changes affect aquatic insect diversity and community structure. The objectives of this study are to examine seasonal variations of the physicochemical conditions in tropical streams in Thailand and to assess the effects of these changes on black fly community structure and diversity. Black flies were sampled and physicochemical conditions recorded at eight sites between December 2007 and December 2008. A total of 10 black fly species were found. Comparisons of the streams between seasons revealed that physical conditions related to rainfall rate were significantly different. Canonical correspondence analysis differentiated sampling sites from each season. Streams in the rainy season were faster and deeper, with higher discharge and conductivity than those of the cold and dry seasons. Species richness was significantly higher in the rainy season than in the cold and dry seasons ( F  = 6.23, P  = 0.004). Community structure profoundly changed between the low-flow season (cold and dry) and high-flow season. Black fly species found predominantly in the low-flow season ( Simulium siamense "cytoform A", S. aureohirtum ) decreased dramatically during the high-flow season. In contrast, species found at high frequency during the high-flow season ( S. nakhonense , S. angulistylum ) disappeared in the low-flow season. The study demonstrates the importance of seasonal variation of stream conditions on black fly community structure and diversity.  相似文献

In this study, we examined the genetic structure and population history of the high elevation black fly Simulium feuerborni in Thailand at both cytogenetic and molecular genetic levels. Cytological examination revealed two cytoforms differentiated by fixed chromosome inversions. The distributions of the cytoforms were associated with geographic origins. Cytoform A was found in the lower north and northeast, and cytoform B was found in the upper northern region of Thailand. Molecular data based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) barcoding sequence supports the separation of the cytoforms. The average sequence divergence between the two cytoforms was 3.75%, which is higher than the threshold value for the species level based on a COI barcoding sequence. Median joining network clearly differentiated the haplotypes of the cytoforms into different lineages. Population pairwise FST and amova analyses reveal significant genetic differentiation between cytoforms. This indicates that the low land areas separating these populations act as a gene flow barrier. No genetic differentiation was detected within cytoforms. This could be due to a recent sharing of population history. Mismatch distribution analysis revealed population expansion in the northern lineage of the cytoform B approximately 220 000 years ago. More recent expansion (32 000 years ago) was found in the lower north and northeast (cytoform A) lineage. The demographic history of S. feuerborni mirrored previous findings in black flies and other insect species in Thailand. This indicates the important role of Pleistocene climatic change on genetic structure and diversity of Southeast Asian mainland species.  相似文献

This study analyzes trends in the extent of major floods in the lower reach of Songkhram River Basin, one of the most important areas for aquatic biological production in the Lower Mekong River Basin. We first classified the time series Landsat imagery acquired at a 2-year interval between 2000 and 2006 using the unsupervised classification method. We then analyzed the extent of major floods through the image matrix analysis on seasonal land cover map pairs. Additionally, we estimated flood volumes and discharge rates for each time series. We finally analyzed the extent of land uses that were affected by major flood events. Accuracy assessment showed that the extent of major floods was accurately mapped. Analysis of trends of major floods revealed that there was a considerable variation in the extent through 2006, with the flood decreasing since 2002. Analysis of flood risk areas based on the 2000–2004 data showed that about 3.04% of the study areas was at high risk of being flooded. Between 2000 and 2006, about 5.5% of the study area that are classified as agriculture and built-up land uses was affected by major floods. Our estimates on flood volumes and discharge rates are consistent with the data from other studies. Overall findings suggest that accurate mapping of major floods and flood risk areas using space and time dependent data can be important for developing protocols for flash flood early warning and flood risk management and mitigation. Output GIS maps and data combined with crude assumptions about water flow will serve as the baseline data to estimate the amount of water that flows in and out of the basin. Further research should focus on integration of social science research to evaluate the socio-economic impacts of major floods and identifying coping strategies of affected communities.  相似文献

Understanding the medical, economic, and ecological importance of black flies relies on correct identification of species. However, traditional taxonomy of black flies is impeded by a high degree of morphological uniformity, especially the presence of cryptic biodiversity, historically recognized by details of chromosomal banding patterns. We assess the utility of DNA barcoding, based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences, for identifying 13 species of Oriental black flies in the subgenus Gomphostilbia. Samples of larvae fixed in Carnoy's solution were used to gather molecular and chromosomal data from the same individual. We found that larvae refrigerated in Carnoy's fixative for as long as 11 years can be used for DNA study. Levels of intraspecific genetic divergence, based on the Kimura-2 parameter, range from 0% to 9.28%, with a mean of 2.75%, whereas interspecific genetic divergence ranges from 0.34% to 16.05%. Values of intraspecific and interspecific genetic divergence overlap in seven species owing to incomplete lineage sorting and imperfect taxonomy, implying that DNA barcoding to identify these species will be ambiguous. Despite a low level of success, we found that DNA barcoding is useful in revealing cryptic biodiversity, potentially facilitating traditional taxonomy. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that species groups currently recognized on morphological criteria are not monophyletic, suggesting a need to reevaluate the classification of the subgenus Gomphostilbia.  相似文献

We analysed salivary gland polytene chromosomes of 796 larvae from 17 populations of Simulium siamense in northeastern Thailand. Seventeen floating and two fixed chromosome inversions were recorded. Three cytoforms (A, F and G) were recognised and two of them are new (F and G). Cytoform F is distinguished by a fixed inversion on the long arm of chromosome II (IIL-8) and cytoform G by fixed inversions on the long arm of chromosome II (IIL-8) and short arm of chromosome III (IIIS-2). Significant departures from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium due to heterozygote deficiency in geographically intermediate populations and absence of shared polymorphic inversions of the cytoforms indicate separation of the gene pool. Morphometric analysis of the larvae revealed significant differences in body length (F = 5.00, p =0.007) and head capsule width (F = 4.68, p = 0.010) among cytoforms.  相似文献
