A three‐part series of workshops in phylogenetic methods was held at the Ohio State University in September and December 2005. The first two were sponsored by the OSU Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI), and focused on phylogeography and phylogenetic data, and phylogenetic analysis of large data sets respectively. These workshops highlighted theoretical and practical aspects of phylogeographic inferences using model‐based approaches (e.g. likelihood and Bayesian MCMC), as well as current approaches to analyzing large datasets using both parsimony and model‐based methods. The third workshop was sponsored by OSU systematics faculty, and was intended to provide practical training in current tools of phylogenetic analysis at the beginning and intermediate levels. The success of these workshops emphasizes the need for greater interaction between those involved in theoretical and empirical phylogenetic research. Further workshops, such as these, would serve to bring a practical understanding of these methods to as broad an audience as possible. © The Willi Hennig Society 2006.  相似文献

The broad geographic range of many Neotropical rain forest tree species implies excellent dispersal abilities or range establishment that preceded the formation of current dispersal barriers. In order to initiate historical analyses of such widespread Neotropical trees, we sequenced the nuclear ribosomal spacer (ITS) region of Symphonia globulifera L. f. (Clusiaceae) from populations spanning the Neotropics and western Africa. This rain forest tree has left unmistakable Miocene fossils in Mesoamerica (15.5-18.2 Ma) and in South America ( approximately 15 Ma). Although marine dispersal of S. globulifera is considered improbable, our study establishes three marine dispersal events leading to the colonization of Mesoamerica, the Amazon basin, and the West Indies, thus supporting the paleontological data. Our phylogeographic analysis revealed the spatial extent of the three Neotropical S. globulifera clades, which represent trans-Andes (Mesoamerica+west Ecuador), cis-Andes (Amazonia+Guiana), and the West Indies. Strong phylogeographic structure found among trans-Andean populations of S. globulifera stands in contrast to an absence of ITS nucleotide variation across the Amazon basin and indicates profound regional differences in the demographic history of this rain forest tree. Drawing from these results, we provide a historical biogeographic hypothesis to account for differences in the patterns of beta diversity within Mesoamerican and Amazonian forests.  相似文献

A retrospective study involving 623 twin and 1246 singleton births was conducted to compare the two groups with regard to selected maternal, fetal and labor and delivery characteristics and outcomes. Maternal age and parity were significantly higher for twins. The risks of preterm delivery, arrival in the labor ward in second stage of labor, cesarean births and postpartum haemorrhage were significantly higher in twin than in singleton births. In vaginal deliveries twin mothers were significantly less likely to have had episiotomies or perineal lacerations. There was no difference in the duration of the third stage of labor or in the incidence of retained placentae. Antepartum haemorrhage was a less likely indication for cesarean delivery among twins, while there was no significant difference in the likelihood of severe pre-eclampsia/eclampsia being an indication. Singleton babies were significantly heavier than twins. The incidences of malpresentation, low birth weight, stillbirths and of admission of live births to the neonatal intensive care unit were significantly higher in twins. There was no difference in the rate of instrumental vaginal delivery, or in the route of delivery of fetuses presenting by the breech. There is the need for detailed study of the incidences of antepartum haemorrhage and hypertensive diseases in twin and singleton pregnancies and of the factors determining the mode of delivery when such complications arise. Labor and delivery should also be examined to determine any differences between the two groups, especially in the first and second stages.  相似文献
