To identify peaks we fit Gaussian distributions to the frequency histograms. For a set consisting of 142 observations of chlorophyll-a and total phosphorus (nutrient) concentrations (TP) from 16 lakes we found four Gaussian peaks corresponding to four subgroups, % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGaamiuaSGaci% 4Aaaaa!37BE!\[P\operatorname{k}\]k = 1,4. One group identified a response of chl-a to changes in TP which correspond approximately to the average slope found by least square regression (the slope was 0.49). The second group consisted of steeper response than the average (1.28). A third group showed that there is an enhanced proportion of cases where chl-a does not respond to TP (zero slope, all the three deep lakes > 10 m, included in the date set contributed to this group). The size of the last group, spanning a wide range of slopes, suggested that about 30% of the inter annual changes in chl-a is unrelated to TP. The results are compared to result obtained by simple least squares regression and to the Theil non-parametric slope estimator.     

Substructure of inner mitochondrial membranes of myocardial cells as shown by cryo-ultramicrotomy

Summary The substructure of the inner mitochondrial membranes has been studied by cryo-ultramicrotomy under conditions during which denaturation of proteins by treatment with chemical solutes has been totally avoided. In such preparations, the inner membrane has a substructure consisting of globular subunits. These subunits have an average diameter of ca. 20Å–ca. 62Å and are fairly regularly spaced. Intracristal space is absent in the unstained, freeze-dried preparations, whereas a space of ca 40Å is seen in preparations lightly treated by OsO₄-vapour. It is concluded that the subunits of the inner mitochondrial membranes probably consist either of single protein molecules or of complexes of protein molecules.This work was supported by grants from The Norwegian Council on Cardiovascular Disease and from The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities     

Drug induced changes in cardio-vascular parameters in the Atlantic cod,Gadus morhua

Summary Ventral (VAP) and dorsal (DAP) aortic blood pressure, heart rate (HR) and cardiac output ( ) were recorded simultaneously in unanaesthetized Atlantic cod, and the effects of vasoactive drugs on the cardio-vascular parameters studied. Mean resting values for the parameters were VAP=4,39 kPa, DAP=2,49 kPa, HR=41 beats/min, and = 29,1 ml/min×kg. Adrenaline constricted the systemic vasculature, dilated the branchial vasculature and caused a decrease of HR and due to a cholinergic reflex. After atropine pre-treatment this reflex was abolished, and the effect of adrenaline on blood pressure enhanced. A small decrease in persisted after atropine, presumably reflecting the effect of an increased end-systolic afterload.Phenylephrine produced a weak increase in systemic vascular resistance, while isoprenaline lowered both systemic and branchial vascular resistance. The effect of isoprenaline is probably mediated by beta adrenoceptors in both vascular beds, since propranolol antagonizes the effect.Acetylcholine in low doses produces a drop in without affecting HR, while higher doses also stop the heart. On the origin of Z-band material and myofilaments in myoblasts from the human atrial wall

Summary The origin of cardiac myofibrils in cells from the atrial wall in human embryos was studied. Z-band substance appears throughout the cytoplasm as irregular electron dense patches in a network of thin filaments. The thin and thick filaments are synthesized as separate units in the sarcoplasm and are later aggregated into myofibrils. Complexes of Z substance and thin filaments occur numerously at different stages of myofibrillar organisation. Thick filaments are formed in close proximity to free ribosomes and are later incorporated in an hexagonal pattern into the Z-band/thin filament complex.This work was supported by grants from The Norwegian Council on Cardiovascular Disease and from The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities     

Metal-directed affinity labeling of zinc(II), cobalt(II) and cadmium(II) horse liver alcohol dehydrogenases

The active site metal in horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase has been studied by metal-directed affinity labeling of the native zinc(II) enzyme and that substituted with cobalt(II) or cadmium(II). Reversible binding of bromoimidazolyl propionic acid to the cobalt enzyme blueshifts the visible absorption band originating from the catalytic cobalt atom at 655 to 630 nm. Binding of imidazole to the cobalt(II) enzyme redshifts the 655 nm band to 667 nm. Addition of bromoimidazolyl propionic acid blueshifts this 667 nm band back to 630 nm. This proves direct binding of the label to the active site metal in competition with imidazole. The affinity of the label for the reversible binding site in the three enzymes follows the order Zn ? Cd ? Co. After reversible complex formation, bromoimidazolyl propionic acid alkylates cysteine-46, one of the protein ligands to the active site metal. The nucleophilic reactivity of this metal-mercaptide bond in each reversible complex follows the order Co ? Zn ? Cd.     

Sympathetic nervous control of blood flow in the gills of the Atlantic cod,Gadus morhua

Summary The effects of sympathetic nerve stimulation, adrenaline and isoprenaline on the inflow pressure and efferent arterial and venous flow rates were studied in a cod gill preparation perfused at constant flow rate.The dominant effect of adrenaline was a reduced inflow pressure, accompanied by an increase in arterial flow and a decrease in venous flow. Isoprenaline also decreased the inflow pressure, but the changes in both outflow rates were small or absent.Sympathetic nerve stimulation gave arterial and venous flow changes comparable to the adrenaline effects, but the inflow pressure increased during nerve stimulation. Propranolol has little effect on the nerve responses, but phentolamine abolished or reversed the increase in inflow pressure, and also decreased or abolished the changes in outflow rates.The possible sites of action of the sympathetic fibres, and the distribution of adrenoceptors in the effector tissue is discussed. It is concluded that the main effect of sympathetic nerve stimulation is -adrenoceptor mediated, involving constriction of the arterio-venous pathway. The-adrenoceptor mediated control of total branchial vascular resistance may largely depend on circulating catecholamines.     

Calcium and magnesium levels in isolated cardiac mitochondria from mice injected with isoproterenol

Summary Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) are determined by atomic absorption flame spectrometry in isolated cardiac mitochondria from mice receiving subcutaneous injections of DL-isoproterenol HC1 (ISO), and in mitochondria of untreated controls. In the controls, mitochondria were isolated in the presence or absence of ruthenium red. On the absence of ruthenium red in the isolation medium, mitochondrial Ca levels increase by about 300%, while levels of Mg remain unchanged. Focal myocardial necrosis following a single ISO-injection is shown by electron microscopy. Ca and Mg levels are largely unaffected by a single dose of ISO until 24 h after the injection. A slight increase in Ca occurs in the 48 h samples. When multiple injections of ISO are given every 12th hour for 48 h, 72 h and 96 h, respectively, endogenous Ca and Mg increase significantly. It is suggested that this increase might be associated with ISO-induced cardiac hypertrophy rather than with the pharmacological effects of ISO per se.This work was supported by grants from The Norwegian Council on Cardiovascular Disease and from The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities
