Chalcone-synthase (CHS) activity was followed during the development of primary leaves of oat (Avena sativa L.) seedlings grown under different illumination conditions. Continuous darkness and continuous light resulted in similar time courses of enzyme activity. The maximum of CHS activity in etiolated leaves was delayed by 1 d and reached about half the level of that of light-grown leaves. In seedlings grown under defined light-dark cycles a diurnal rhythm of CHS activity and its protein level was observed which followed the rhythm of CHS-mRNA translational activity (Knogge et al. 1986). This rhythm persisted in continuous light after a short-term pre-exposure to the light-dark cycle but not in continuous darkness.Abbreviations CHS chalcone synthase - PAL phenylalanine ammonio lyase Financial support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft is gratefully acknowledged (G.W., We 630/9-7; We 630/10-1). Bromeliads are a conspicuous component of tropical forests. Whereas several amphibian species are closely associated with bromeliads, reptiles are much less frequently observed in bromeliads and only a few species use bromeliads for egg deposition or as roost site. We report on an adult Urostrophus vautieri that was sleeping in a water-filled bromeliad. The individual was submerged except for head and shoulder. To our knowledge, it is the first time that such behavior has been observed in an arboreal Neotropical lizard.  相似文献

Vertebrate predation was examined in sympatric moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax) and saddle-back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) in the Amazon rainforest of northeastern Peru. Both species prey on frogs and lizards, and very rarely on nestling birds. As a result of divergent foraging strategies, S. mystax primarily exploited frogs at higher strata of the forest, while S. fuscicollis predominantly preyed on reptiles in the lower strata and on the ground. This difference may strengthen the niche differentiation between these two tamarin species that exists with regard to other prey.  相似文献

Researchers have described multilevel societies with one-male, multifemale units (OMUs) forming within a larger group in several catarrhine species, but not in platyrhines. OMUs in multilevel societies are associated with extremely large group sizes, often with >100 individuals, and the only platyrhine genus that forms groups of this size is Cacajao. We review available evidence for multilevel organization and the formation of OMUs in groups of Cacajao, and test predictions for the frequency distribution patterns of male–male and male–female interindividual distances within groups of red-faced uakaris (Cacajao calvus ucayalii), comparing year-round data with those collected at the peak of the breeding season, when group cohesion may be more pronounced. Groups of Cacajao fission and fuse, forming subgroup sizes at frequencies consistent with an OMU organization. In Cacajao calvus ucayalii and Cacajao calvus calvus, bachelor groups are also observed, a characteristic of several catarrhine species that form OMUs. However, researchers have observed both multimale–multifemale groups and groups with a single male and multiple females in Cacajao calvus. The frequency distributions of interindividual distances for male–male and male–female dyads are consistent with an OMU-based organization, but alternative interpretations of these data are possible. The distribution of interindividual distances collected during the peak breeding season differed from those collected year-round, indicating seasonal changes in the spatial organization of Cacajao calvus ucayalii. We suggest a high degree of flexibility may characterize the social organization of Cacajao calvus ucayalii, which may form OMUs under certain conditions. Further studies with identifiable individuals, thus far not possible in Cacajao, are required to confirm the social organization.  相似文献

Passage through tamarin guts may have an effect on seed germination potential. To examine these effects, and the variation between 2 sympatric tamarin species, we studied Saguinus mystax and S. fuscicollis in northeastern Peruvian Amazonia. For most of 39 plant species, neither germination success nor latency was modified by gut passage. Neutral effects on seed germination potential suggest that tamarins may fulfill criteria for effective seed dispersal.  相似文献

We report temporal variation and an “outbreak” of frog predation by moustached tamarins, Saguinus mystax, in north-eastern Peruvian Amazonia. Frog predation rates were generally very low, but strongly increased in October 2015. Other high rates, identified by outlier analyses, were also observed in September–November of other years. Over all study years, predation rates in this 3-month period were significantly higher than those in the remainder of the year, suggesting a seasonal pattern of frog predation by tamarins. Reduced fruit availability or increased frog abundance or a combination of both may be responsible for both the seasonal pattern and the specific “outbreak” of frog predation.  相似文献

In phytopathology quantitative measurements are rarely used to assess crop plant disease symptoms. Instead, a qualitative valuation by eye is often the method of choice. In order to close the gap between subjective human inspection and objective quantitative results, the development of an automated analysis system that is capable of recognizing and characterizing the growth patterns of fungal hyphae in micrograph images was developed. This system should enable the efficient screening of different host-pathogen combinations (e.g., barley—Blumeria graminis, barley—Rhynchosporium secalis) using different microscopy technologies (e.g., bright field, fluorescence). An image segmentation algorithm was developed for gray-scale image data that achieved good results with several microscope imaging protocols. Furthermore, adaptability towards different host-pathogen systems was obtained by using a classification that is based on a genetic algorithm. The developed software system was named HyphArea, since the quantification of the area covered by a hyphal colony is the basic task and prerequisite for all further morphological and statistical analyses in this context. By means of a typical use case the utilization and basic properties of HyphArea could be demonstrated. It was possible to detect statistically significant differences between the growth of an R. secalis wild-type strain and a virulence mutant.  相似文献

NIP1, a small phytotoxic protein secreted by the barley pathogen Rhynchosporium secalis, is a race-specific elicitor of defense responses in barley cultivars carrying the resistance gene, Rrs1. Co-inoculation employing spores from a virulent fungal race together with the NIP1 protein converted the phenotype of the interaction from compatible to incompatible only on Rrs1-containing plants. In addition, transformation of a virulent fungal race with the nip1 gene yielded avirulent transformants. This demonstrated that the protein is the product of a fungal avirulence gene. The fungal genome was found to contain a single copy of the nip1 gene. Sequence analysis of nip1 cDNA and genomic clones revealed that the gene consists of two exons and one intron. The derived amino acid sequence comprised a secretory signal peptide of 22 amino acids and a cysteine-rich mature protein of 60 amino acids. All fungal races that were avirulent on barley cultivars of the Rrs1 resistance genotype carry and express the nip1 gene and secrete an elicitor-active NIP1 polypeptide. In contrast, races lacking this gene were virulent. In addition, single nucleotide exchanges were detected in the coding region of the nip1 alleles in one virulent fungal race and in a race whose interaction with barley is not controlled by the Rrs1 gene. The resulting exchanges of single amino acids render the gene products elicitor-inactive. Thus, the R.secalis-barley interaction provides the first example of a pathosystem conforming to the gene-for-gene hypothesis in which a plant with a particular resistance gene recognizes a pathogen by a virulence factor, i.e. one of its offensive weapons. On the fungal side, in turn, recognition by the host plant is eluded by either deletion of the encoding gene or alteration of the primary structure of the gene product.  相似文献

Considerable amounts of the following substances were found in uninfected parsley (Petroselinum crispum) cotyledons: furanocoumarins, the putative phytoalexins of this and some related plant species, two enzymes of the furanocoumarin pathway (S-adenosyl-L-methionine: xanthotoxol and S-adenosyl-L-methionine: bergaptol O-methyltransferases), two hydrolytic enzymes (1,3--glucanase, EC 3.2.1.39, and chitinase, EC 3.2.1.14), and pathogenesis-related proteins. The furanocoumarins and the methyltransferase activities reached their highest levels at the onset of cotyledon senescence as the hydrolytic enzymes increased from low to relatively high activity values. The relative amounts of pathogenesis-related proteins 1 and 2, as well as the corresponding mRNAs, also increased markedly. Two enzymes of general phenylpropanoid metabolism, L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and 4-coumarate: CoA ligase, decreased in activity in a biphasic fashion during cotyledon development. At all developmental stages, the levels of these putative defense-related agents in total cotyledon extracts were too high to enable detection of, possibly, additional changes upon infection with zoospores of Phytophthora megasperma f. sp. glycinea, a fungal pathogen to which parsley shows a non-host, hypersensitive resistance response.Abbreviations BMT S-adenosyl-L-methionine: bergaptol O-methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.-) - 4CL 4-coumarate: CoA ligase (EC 6.1.1.12) - CMT S-adenosyl-L-methionine: caffeate O-methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.-) - PAL L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (EC 4.3.1.5) - PR pathogenesis-related - XMT S-adenosyl-L-methionine: xanthotoxin O-methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.-)  相似文献
