The distribution of parasites among individual hosts is characterised by high variability that is believed to be a result of variations in host traits. To find general patterns of host traits affecting parasite abundance, we studied flea infestation of nine rodent species from three different biomes (temperate zone of central Europe, desert of Middle East and tropics of East Africa). We tested for independent and interactive effects of host sex and body mass on the number of fleas harboured by an individual host while accounting for spatial clustering of host and parasite sampling and temporal variation. We found no consistent patterns of the effect of host sex and body mass on flea abundance either among species within a biome or among biomes. We found evidence for sex-biased flea infestation in just five host species (Apodemus agrarius, Myodes glareolus, Microtus arvalis, Gerbillus andersoni, Mastomys natalensis). In six rodent species, we found an effect of body mass on flea abundance (all species mentioned above and Meriones crassus). This effect was positive in five species and negative in one species (Microtus arvalis). In M. glareolus, G. andersoni, M. natalensis, and M. arvalis, the relationship between body mass and flea abundance was mediated by host sex. This was manifested in steeper change in flea abundance with increasing body mass in male than female individuals (M. glareolus, G. andersoni, M. natalensis), whereas the opposite pattern was found in M. arvalis. Our findings suggest that sex and body mass are common determinants of parasite infestation in mammalian hosts, but neither of them follows universal rules. Similarly to Helicobacter pylori but unlike Vibrio cholerae O1/O139, Campylobacter jejuni is non‐motile at 20°C but highly motile at ≥37°C. The bacterium C. jejuni has one of the highest swimming speeds reported (>100 μm/s), especially at 42°C. Straight and spiral bacterial shapes share the same motility. C. jejuni has a unique structure in the flagellate polar region, which is characterized by a cup‐like structure (beneath the inner membrane), a funnel shape (opening onto the polar surface) and less dense space (cytoplasm). Other Campylobacter species (coli, fetus, and lari) have similar motility and flagellate polar structures, albeit with slight differences. This is especially true for Campylobacter fetus, which has a flagellum only at one pole and a cup‐like structure composed of two membranes. 相似文献

We studied patterns of phylogenetic and compositional diversity of fleas parasitic on small mammals and asked whether these patterns are affected by environmental variation or evolutionary/historical processes. We considered environmental variation via both off‐host (air temperature, precipitation, the amount of green vegetation, latitude) and host‐associated (phylogenetic and species composition) environments. The indicators of evolutionary/historical processes were phylogenetic and compositional uniqueness estimated via phylogenetic or compositional, respectively, β‐diversity of either fleas or hosts. We found that phylogenetic uniqueness of flea assemblages was the main predictor of their phylogenetic diversity in all realms. In addition, host phylogenetic diversity and uniqueness played also some role in the Palearctic, whereas the effect of the off‐host environment was either extremely weak or absent. Compositional diversity of fleas was consistently affected by compositional diversity of hosts in all realms except the Neotropics. The effect of the off‐host environment on compositional flea diversity was substantial in all realms except the Palearctic. No effect of latitude on either metric of flea diversity was found. We conclude that phylogenetic diversity of fleas is driven mainly by evolutionary/historical processes, whereas drivers of their compositional diversity are associated with current ecological conditions. 相似文献

The effect of anti-microtubular agents oryzalin (15 M) and colchicine (1 mM) on respiration and fine cellular organization of leaves was studied in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings. Unlike oryzalin, colchicine considerably suppressed total respiration and the activities of cytochrome and cyanide-resistant pathways of electron transport, probably due to its rotenone-like effect since the latter was negated by vicasol that shunts the first complex of respiratory chain. Oryzalin-induced changes in the ultrastructure of mitochondria and polysomes corresponding to a decrease in their functional activity were detected. The changes in the shape of mitochondria were observed in the companion cells, whereas the mesophyll organelles did not respond to oryzalin. Disintegration of polysomes induced by oryzalin was detected in the cells of both tissues. Association of microtubules with mitochondria, polysomes, and plasma membrane was detected in situ. These data suggest that the intact cytoskeleton may participate in the spatial organization of energy transformation and protein synthesis machinery of the cells; the fact that the observed changes were tissue-specific points at the functional role of microtubules and/or to the number of targets for the inhibitor. 相似文献

Radial self-diffusion of water in the absorbing zone of the roots of winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) seedlings was studied by the pulse-gradient-spin-echo NMR method. At the fixed time of diffusion observation, the diffusion decay of proton spin-echo was nonexponential; however, it could be reliably separated into three exponential components differing in the self-diffusion coefficients (SDC) of water molecules. Our experimental data corroborate the modern concept of two transport channels in plant plasmodesmata, which connect cytoplasmic and vacuolar (endoplasmic) compartments of adjacent cells into the unified supracellular continuums. Two SDC obtained by the kinetic analysis of diffusion decay were shown to depend on the expected changes in the hydraulic conductivity of the two above-mentioned plasmodesmal channels. To elucidate the role of ATP-dependent actomyosin proteins in the regulation of the hydraulic conductivity of plasmodesmata, we followed the changes in the water SDC induced by treating the roots with cytochalasin B (5 M, 30 min), the inhibitor of actin polymerization; 2,3-butanedione monoxime (10 mM, 1 h), the inhibitor of myosin ATPase activity; and antimycin A (5 M, 1 h) and sodium azide (10 mM, 30 min), the inhibitors of energy generation. The data thus obtained provided the basis for elaborating a new methodological approach to simultaneously monitoring the functional state of both plasmodesmal channels without any wound effect impairing their functions. 相似文献

Recoverin is an N-myristoylated 23 kDa calcium-binding protein from retina, which modulates the Ca2+-sensitive deactivation of rhodopsin via Ca2+-dependent inhibition of rhodopsin kinase. It was shown by intrinsic and bis-ANS probe fluorescence, circular dichroism, and differential scanning calorimetry that myristoylated recombinant recoverin interacts specifically with zinc ions. Similar to the calcium binding, the binding of zinc to Ca2+-loaded recoverin additionally increases its alpha-helical content, hydrophobic surface area, and environmental mobility/polarity of its tryptophan residues. In contrast to the calcium binding, the binding of zinc decreases thermal stability of the Ca2+-loaded protein. Zn2+-titration of recoverin, traced by bis-ANS fluorescence, reveals binding of a single Zn2+ ion per protein molecule. It was shown that the double-mutant E85Q/E121Q with inactivated Ca2+-binding EF-hands 2 and 3 (Alekseev, A. M.; Shulga-Morskoy, S. V.; Zinchenko, D. V.; Shulga-Morskaya, S. A.; Suchkov, D. V.; Vaganova, S. A.; Senin, I. I.; Zargarov, A. A.; Lipkin, V. M.; Akhtar, M.; Philippov, P. P. FEBS Lett. 1998, 440, 116-118), which can be considered as an analogue of the apo-protein, binds Zn2+ ion as well. Apparent zinc equilibrium binding constants evaluated from spectrofluorimetric Zn2+-titrations of the protein are 1.4 x 10(5) M(-1) (dissociation constant 7.1 microM) for Ca2+-loaded wild-type recoverin and 3.3 x 10(4) M(-1) (dissociation constant 30 microM) for the E85Q/E121Q mutant (analogue of apo-recoverin). Study of the binding of wild-type recoverin to ROS membranes showed a zinc-dependent increase of its affinity for the membranes, without regard to calcium content, suggesting further solvation of a protein myristoyl group upon Zn2+ binding.
