We present a severe case of disseminated phaeohyphomycosis due to Veronaea botryosa. A 32-year-old female, native from Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, presented a chronic dermatosis which started 10 years earlier with multiple exophytic, multilobulated, soft, and pedunculated or sessile neoformations of diverse sizes from 2 to 10 cm in diameter, which became verrucose and increased in size. The patient was immunocompetent, and no hereditary or familiar precedents of importance were known. No treatment was given, and the dermatosis remained relatively stable until the patient became pregnant in 2001 and 2003. The infection then exacerbated and worsened, leading to dissemination to the extremities, trunk, and face. The initial diagnosis was chromoblastomycosis which was treated with terbinafine and itraconazole but without visible improvement. Histopathology revealed pigmented, irregular, unbranched, and septate hyphae. Veronaea botryosa was isolated (CBS 127264 = JX566723), and its identity was confirmed by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA. Therapy with posaconazole (800 mg/day) was started showing a gradual improvement of lesions with a reduction in size and flattening of the eruptions.  相似文献

In this study, a nanoemulsion containing mebudipine [composed of ethyl oleate (oil phase), Tween 80 (T80), Span 80 (S80) (surfactants), polyethylene glycol 400, ethanol (cosurfactants), and deionized water] was prepared with the aim of improving its bioavailability for an effective antihypertensive therapy. Particle size of the formulation was measured by dynamic light scattering. Then, artificial neural networks were used in identifying factors that influence the particle size of the nanoemulsion. Three variables, namely, amount of surfactant system (T80?+?S80), amount of polyethylene glycol, and amount of ethanol as cosurfactants, were considered as input values and the particle size was used as output. The developed model showed that all the three inputs had some degrees of effect on particles size: increasing the value of each input decreased the size. Furthermore, amount of surfactant was found to be the dominant factor in controlling the final particle size of nanoemulsion.

Sex differences in the prevalence, incidence, and severity of osteoarthritis (OA) have long been known. Some differences in the evaluation of this issue across studies may be related to differences in study design, sampling, study size, study populations, targeted joint sites, and definitions of OA. This report highlights recent studies of sex differences in individual joint components imaged by magnetic resonance imaging and in systemic biomarkers of joint metabolism. Particularly important are those studies that examine this issue in young unaffected adults and children before the development of disease. Despite some variation across studies, women appear for the most part to have a thinner and more reduced volume of cartilage in the knee than men, and this may occur from early childhood. It is not clear whether women have a more accelerated rate of cartilage volume loss than men. Few data exist on sex differences in systemic biomarkers of joint metabolism. In these studies, it is critically important to characterize the total body burden of OA and the presence of comorbid conditions likely to influence a given biomarker. Lastly, future research should dovetail studies of sex differences in imaging and biochemical biomarkers with genetics to maximize insight into the mechanisms behind observed sex differences.  相似文献

Due to its wide industrial application, chromium (Cr) is known to be a critical environmental pollutant. Contamination of water and agricultural soil by Cr inhibits crop productivity and their physiological and biochemical processes. The objective of the current work was to investigate the effects of appropriate reducing agents such as EDTA, iron sulfate (Fe2+), and zerovalent nano iron (Fe0 nanoparticles) on growth and physiology of sunflower plants under Cr(VI) stress. Results showed that the Cr uptake increased by increasing the amount of EDTA, leading to a significant reduction in morphological and physiological parameters except for MDA and H2O2 contents. Treatment with Fe0 nanoparticles and Fe2+ reduced Cr concentration in root and shoot, increased root and shoot dry weight, plastid pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoids) and proline contents; however, the level of MDA and H2O2 decreased significantly. All parameters were affected by Fe2+ during the first week of sampling; however, Fe0 nanoparticles affected all traits until the end of the third sampling stage. A statistically significant and positive correlation was found between root Cr concentration and MDA and H2O2 seedlings treated with EDTA, Fe2+, and Fe0 grown under Cr stress. From the result of this study, it can be concluded that sunflower has the potential for accumulation of Cr as a heavy metal, and treatment with Fe0 nanoparticles to prevent Cr uptake is more effective than other employed treatments.  相似文献

We aimed to study the relation between plasma levels of stress-induced heat shock protein 70 (HSPA1A) with plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1), and HDL-C/Apo-A1 ratio. In a matched case-control study on patients with diabetes (40 patients with albuminuria and 40 without albuminuria matched for age, sex, and body mass index), we observed that plasma levels of HSPA1A and PAI-1 are increased in patients with albuminuria (0.55 ± 0.02 vs. 0.77 ± 0.04 ng/ml, p value <0.001 for HSPA1A; 25.9 ± 2 vs. 31.8 ± 2.4 ng/ml, p value <0.05 for PAI-1). There was a significant correlation between HSPA1A and PAI-1 in diabetic patients without albuminuria (r = 0.28; p value = 0.04), but not in those with albuminuria (r = 0.07; p value = 0.63). No association was found between HSPA1A and HDL-C, between HSPA1A and Apo-A1, or between HSPA1A and HDL-C/Apo-A1 ratio. We concluded that there is a direct correlation between plasma HSPA1A and PAI-1 levels in patients with diabetes, which is lost when they develop albuminuria.  相似文献

Background aimsThe aim was to investigate the therapeutic effect of granulocyte–colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration following implantation of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM MNC) for patients with lower limb ischemia.MethodsThe design was a randomized controlled trial. Fifteen patients with severe chronic limb ischemia were treated with autologous BM MNC [without G-CSF (MNC–G-CSF) or combined with G-CSF administration for 5 days following transplantation (MNC+G-CSF)].ResultsAll clinical parameters, including ankle brachial index, visual analog scale and pain-free walking distance, showed a mean improvement from baseline, which was measured at 4 and 24 weeks after transplantation in both groups. However, in three (20%) patients, the clinical course did not improve and limb salvage was not achieved. No significant difference was observed among the patients treated in the MNC–G-CSF and MNC+G-CSF groups. No severe adverse reactions were reported during the study period. No relationship was observed between both the numbers of viable MNC or CD34+ cells and the clinical outcome.ConclusionsAutologous transplantation of BM MNC into ischemic lower limbs is safe, feasible and efficient for patients with severe peripheral artery disease. However, the administration of G-CSF following cell transplantation does not improve the effect of BM MNC implantation and therefore would not have any beneficial value in clinical applications of such cases.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to examine the efficacy of PhytoSolve and Phosal-based formulation (PBF) to enhance the oral bioavailability of mebudipine, which is a poorly water-soluble calcium channel blocker. The solubility of mebudipine in various oils was determined. PhytoSolve was prepared with a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil (20%), soybean phospholipids (5%), and a 70% fructose solution (75%). The influence of the weight ratio of Phosal 50PG to glycerol in PBF on the mean globule size was studied with dynamic light scattering. The optimized formulation was evaluated for robustness toward dilution, transparency, droplet size, and zeta potential. The in vivo oral absorption of different mebudipine formulations (PhytoSolve, PBF, oily solution, and suspension) were evaluated in rats. The optimized PBF contained Phosal 50PG/glycerol in a 6:4 ratio (w/w). The PBF and PhytoSolve formulations were miscible with water in any ratio and did not demonstrate any phase separation or drug precipitation over 1 month of storage. The mean particle size of PhytoSolve and PBF were 138.5 ± 9.0 and 74.4 ± 2.5 nm, respectively. The in vivo study demonstrated that the oral bioavailability of PhytoSolve and PBF in rats was significantly higher than that of the other formulations. The PhytoSolve and PBF formulations of mebudipine are found to be more bioavailable compared with suspension and oily solutions during an in vivo study in rats.
