Synopsis The effects of constant and diurnally fluctuating levels of dissolved oxygen on the growth of young-of-the-year winter flounder,Pseudopleuronectes americanus, were examined under controlled laboratory conditions. Fish were exposed for either 10 or 11 weeks to constant levels of 6.7 (high) and 2.2 (low) mg l–1, and a diurnal fluctuation, ranging from 2.5 to 6.4 mg 02l–1. Growth rates, calculated for both standard length and weight, for fish exposed to low and diurnally fluctuating levels were significantly reduced (p < 0.001) as compared to those for fish exposed to the high level. Growth rates of fish exposed to the high level were over twice those of fish held under low oxygen conditions. Under fluctuating conditions, fish grew at intermediate rates. Following these exposures, all fish were subsequently held at 7.2 mg Oz l–1 for five weeks. Growth rates increased over two and a half times for fish previously exposed to the low oxygen level and were significantly (p < 0.001) higher than for the other two groups. 相似文献

The interstitial system of the spinal trigeminal tract in the rat: anatomical evidence for morphological and functional heterogeneity 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Utilizing cyto-, myelo-, and chemoarchitecture as well as connectional criteria, the present study reveals the interstitial system of the spinal trigeminal tract (InSy-SVT) in the rat to be composed of five morphologically and functionally distinct components that are distributed within spatially restricted regions of the lateral medulla. The first component is represented by scattered interstitial cells and neuropil, which extend laterally into SVT from the superficial laminae of the medullary dorsal horn (MDH). The second component, the dorsal paramarginal nucleus (PaMd), consists of a small group of marginal (lamina I)-like neurons and neuropil situated within the dorsolateral part of SVT at the rostral pole of MDH. The third component represents a trigeminal extension of the parvocellular reticular formation (V-Rpc) into the ventromedial aspect of SVT at levels extending from rostral MDH to the caudal part of trigeminal nucleus interpolaris (Vi). The fourth component, the paratrigeminal nucleus (PaV), consists of a large accumulation of neurons and neuropil situated within the dorsal part of SVT throughout the caudal half of Vi. The fifth component is the insular trigeminal-cuneatus lateralis nucleus (iV-Cul), which is a discontinuous collection of neurons and neuropil interspersed among fibers of SVT as well as wedged between it and the spinocerebellar tract. Microwave irradiation of rats at 2.45 GHz activates pinocytotic-like uptake of tracer by capillary endothelial cells of cerebral cortex 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Far-field exposures of male albino rats to 2.45-GHz microwaves (10-microseconds pulses, 100 pps) at a low average power density (10 mW/cm2; SAR approximately 2 W/kg) and short durations (30-120 min) resulted in increased uptakes of tracer through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The uptake of systemically administered rhodamine-ferritin complex by capillary endothelial cells (CECs) of the cerebral cortex was dependent on power density and on duration of exposure. At 5 mW/cm2, for example, a 15-min exposure had no effect. Near-complete blockade of uptake resulted when rats were treated before exposure to microwaves with a single dose of colchicine, which inhibits microtubular function. A pinocytotic-like mechanism is presumed responsible for the microwave-induced increase in BBB permeability. 相似文献

Summary The effects of anoxia and reoxygenation on major antioxidant enzyme activities were investigatedin vitro in immortalized rat brain endothelial cells (RBE4 cells). A sublethal anoxic period of 12 h was assessed for RBE4 cells using the neutral red uptake test. Anoxia markedly influenced the specific activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase,
with no major effect on glutathione peroxidase or glutathione reductase. After 24 h postanoxia, the superoxide dismutase activity
modulated by the presence or absence of oxygen returned to control value.
Damage and recovery of RBE4 immortalized rat brain endothelial cells in culture after exposure to free radicals and other oxygen-derived species provides

The aunting behavior in a captive group of 22 squirrel monkeys containing three infants was done in terms of the age/sex classification
of those animals involved. The time course of the aunting phenomena and the type and intensity of the interactions between
the mothers and the aunts were recorded. Males as well as females were observed to ascertain if the babysitters were sex specific.
Observations were gathered before, during, and after a particular threat to any monkey who was carrying an infant. Three categories
of protective behavior (protect, retreat, and nothing) were tabulated. The results indicated that most aunting and protection
occurred between infant ages 2-1/2-5 weeks when the infants were growing rapidly but not as yet socially self-sufficient.
Mothers protected infants the most against juveniles, then subadult males, and least against other adult females. Subadult
males were occasionally observed to carry and protect older infants. Aunting behavior was discussed in terms of the selective
