Bovine β-lactoglobulin is a dimer with a molecular weight of 2 × 18,400. In solution it undergoes a pH-dependent transition at pH 7.0 between two alternative structures, named N and R. The structures of four different crystal forms have been determined by multiple isomorphous replacement with heavy-atoms. Two of them, lattices K and X, were crystallised at pH 6.5, corresponding to the N state in solution; and the other two, lattices Y and Z, were crystallised at pH 7.5, corresponding to the R state in solution. The figures of merit of the phase angles determined for these lattices were 0.76, 0.77, 0.80 and 0.80, respectively. The four structures that emerged are similar and show certain features suggestive of α-helices and pleated sheets, but the resolution is insufficient to trace the entire course of the polypeptide chain. No clear distinction can yet be made between the structures above or below pH 7.0, nor between the native molecule and the molecule from which the C-terminal leucine and histidine residues have been cleaved. In the regenerating newt tail, epimorphic regeneration--which recapitulates morphologically normal embryonic development--proceeds along a rostrocaudal differentiation gradient. Innervation of the new myomeres results from the spinal roots of segments rostral to the amputation plane and from ventral roots emerging from the lateroventral region of the regenerating spinal cord, in which motor neurons are differentiating. Electron microscopy and an indirect immunofluorescence study with anti-glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) confirm that the ventrolateral part of the regenerated ependymal tube gives rise to cells of the ventral root sheath and the spinal ganglia. Anti-GFAP and anti-neurofilament antibodies showed that ependymoglial cells and Schwann cells may play a role in neuronal pathfinding by helping guide and stabilize pioneering axons as they extend toward the myomeres. The carbohydrate epitope NC-1 is expressed in the spinal cord, in sheath cells of the spinal ganglia and in the non-myelin-forming Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. L1, a Ca++ independent neural cell adhesion molecule, was detected in the axonal compartments of the regenerating spinal cord, on immature and/or non-myelin-forming Schwann cells within the peripheral nervous system (PNS), and on nerve fibers within the regenerate. Competing group members tend to arrange in a social order that governs who will likely submit to whom. In many species the spatial distribution of individuals often reflects social status: dominants tend to occupy central locations while subordinates are often found along the group's periphery. This article explores the emergence of spatial consequences as a result of social rank differentiation. Rather than orienting centripetally, the movements of crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) primarily indicated a tendency to remain close to arena walls. Spatial locations were affected by the location of group members; but, rather than actively aggregating or clustering, individuals maintained a minimum distance. Previously established social rank did not affect spatial distributions. High population densities in the field are likely attributed to habitat constraints, rather than any social or centripetal tendencies of individual crayfish. 相似文献
