Upstream movements and migrations of benthic macroinvertebrates are an important component of running water dynamics. Many lotic organisms perform upstream movements at some stage in their life-cycle. We investigated whether a boulder ramp and a concrete bypass fishway on two streams in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, are successfully used by benthic invertebrates to reach upstream areas. We compared macroinvertebrate distribution at sites upstream and downstream of the fishways, rated the fishways according to their constructional features and conducted migration experiments with marked Gammaridae in the passages. The number of taxa and densities of macroinvertebrates did not significantly differ between upstream and downstream sites in both rivers. Constructional features and the results of the mark-recapture experiments indicated that the boulder ramp allows upstream migrations in principal, whereas the bypass is more difficult for macroinvertebrates to ascend. Both fishways immediately exit into an impoundment, which is a potential barrier for migrating invertebrates. High average current velocities, lack of lenitic banks and sheltered interstices, as well as problems caused by the operation of a power plant are factors explaining why the Enz River bypass is only marginally functional for invertebrates. The investigation concludes that in constructing fishways suitable for upstream movements of lotic invertebrates, more attention should be paid to their specific requirements.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNAs of six morphologically different Phytophthora species were digested with 15 restriction enzymes. The numbers of restriction fragments obtained differed considerably from those theoretically expected for random base distribution. Enzymes with relatively many G and C in their recognition sequences produced significantly larger numbers of fragments. Moreover, fragments generated by most of these enzymes were more often shared by two or more species than those from enzymes with more A and T in their recognition sequence. It is concluded that base distribution in mitochondrial DNA of Phytophthora is heterogeneous,AT-rich stretches occurring scattered over the mitochondrial genome and GC-rich regions present in conserved sequences, presumably genes. A practical consequence for taxonomic RFLP studies is that optimal enzymes can be selected, depending on the desired level of resolution.  相似文献

Caucasian populations have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) when compared with their Chinese counterparts and CVD is associated with autonomic function. It is unknown whether autonomic function during exercise recovery differs between Caucasians and Chinese. The present study investigated autonomic recovery following an acute bout of treadmill exercise in healthy Caucasians and Chinese. Sixty-two participants (30 Caucasian and 32 Chinese, 50% male) performed an acute bout of treadmill exercise at 70% of heart rate reserve. Heart rate variability (HRV) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) were obtained during 5-min epochs at pre-exercise, 30-min, and 60-min post-exercise. HRV was assessed using frequency [natural logarithm of high (LnHF) and low frequency (LnLF) powers, normalized high (nHF) and low frequency (nLF) powers, and LF/HF ratio] and time domains [Root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), natural logarithm of RMSSD (LnRMSSD) and R–R interval (RRI)]. Spontaneous BRS included both up-up and down-down sequences. At pre-exercise, no group differences were observed for any HR, HRV and BRS parameters. During exercise recovery, significant race-by-time interactions were observed for LnHF, nHF, nLF, LF/HF, LnRMSSD, RRI, HR, and BRS (up-up). The declines in LnHF, nHF, RMSSD, RRI and BRS (up-up) and the increases in LF/HF, nLF and HR were blunted in Chinese when compared to Caucasians from pre-exercise to 30-min to 60-min post-exercise. Chinese exhibited delayed autonomic recovery following an acute bout of treadmill exercise. This delayed autonomic recovery may result from greater sympathetic dominance and extended vagal withdrawal in Chinese.Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Register ChiCTR-IPR-15006684  相似文献

The 18S ribosomal RNAs of 21 tetrapods were sequenced and aligned with five published tetrapod sequences. When the coelacanth was used as an outgroup, Lissamphibia (living amphibians) and Amniota (amniotes) were found to be statistically significant monophyletic groups. Although little resolution was obtained among the lissamphibian taxa, the amniote sequences support a sister-group relationship between birds and mammals. Portions of the 28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) molecule in 11 tetrapods also were sequenced, although the phylogenetic results were inconclusive. In contrast to previous studies, deletion or down- weighting of base-paired sites were found to have little effect on phylogenetic relationships. Molecular evidence for amniote relationships is reviewed, showing that three genes (beta-hemoglobin, myoglobin, and 18S rRNA) unambiguously support a bird-mammal relationship, compared with one gene (histone H2B) that favors a bird- crocodilian clade. Separate analyses of four other genes (alpha- crystallin A, alpha-hemoglobin, insulin, and 28S rRNA) and a combined analysis of all sequence data are inconclusive, in that different groups are defined in different analyses and none are strongly supported. It is suggested that until sequences become available from a broader array of taxa, the molecular evidence is best evaluated at the level of individual genes, with emphasis placed on those studies with the greatest number of taxa and sites. When this is done, a bird-mammal relationship is most strongly supported. When regarded in combination with the morphological evidence for this association, it must be considered at least as plausible as a bird-crocodilian relationship.   相似文献

It is known that most carcinogenic chemicals can be bound irreversibly to proteins or nucleic acids. A study is presented that explored the irreversible binding of 17alpha-ethinyl estradiol to proteins and nucleic acids by the catalytic action of rat liver microsomes and muschroom tyrosinase. The microsomal binding reaction was inhibited by glutathione and cysteine and its derivatives though it was not affected by lysine and amines. Binding reactivity in the tyrosinase system was inhibited by glutathione, cysteine and its derivates, lysine, and amines. Polylysine did not bind the metabolite of ethinyl estradiol, which suggests the NH2 groups do not bind to the intermediate in the microsomal reaction. However, polylysine did bind irreversibly with esthinyl estradiol metabolites in tyrosinase catalysis. The nonenzymatic reaction of 17beta-hydroxy-4,10(1)-estradiene-2,3-dione with cysteine, lysine, and lysine derivates was found to support the thesis that estrogen o-quinones are the intermediates involved in the protein binding of estrogens in tyrosinase catalysis. An irreversible binding of ethinyl estradiol to DNA and RNA occurred with tyrosinase but not with rat liver microsomes. It was concluded that the results of rat liver microsome catalysis make it unlikely that estrogens are chemical carcinogens.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria, an increasingly important epiphyte on macroalgae and seagrass, have been shown to have strong effects on its hosts; this association has been identified as a driving mechanism that maintains algal blooms on coral reefs. We examined both the costs and benefits of epiphytism on 2 algal congeners of Halimeda (H. tuna and H. opuntia), both of which are abundant members of tropical reef communities in the Caribbean. To evaluate potential benefits of an associational defense as well as costs to growth, we manipulated herbivore access to (uncaged/caged) and cyanobacteria presence on (epiphytized/cleaned) 2 species of Halimeda on shallow patch reefs in Belize and measured change in branch length and segment number after 10 (H. tuna) and 5 (H. opuntia) days. Cyanobacterial epiphytes did not serve as an associational defense from herbivory as there were no differences between caged and uncaged treatments for either response variable. The presence of cyanobacterial epiphytes did not affect the growth of branches or net generation of new segments, demonstrating there was also no cost to growth. The robustness of both species of Halimeda to epiphytism contrasts strongly with recent research that found strong effects of epiphytes on several other species of tropical algae. Our results may be attributed to the unique characteristics of Halimeda, a heavily physically and chemically defended algal genus, and the shallow nature of the patch reefs reducing the potential for significant light limitation. These findings suggest that close interactions such as epiphytism may not be as generalizable as originally assumed; studies must consider differences among host species, as this may lead to a better understanding of community-wide effects.  相似文献
