Summary Life history theory predicts that migratory fishes should delay reproduction, be larger at first reproduction, and have higher fecundities than nonmigrants. We tested this hypothesis by comparing life histories of anadromous (estuary) and resident freshwater (upstream) threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) from the Navarro River, California, USA. Using a split-brood, two-environment breeding design, families from cach population were divided and reared in both freshwater and seawater overwintering environments. In both treatments, the more migratory estuary sticklebacks were larger at first reproduction and had large initial clutch sizes; in the freshwater treatment, the estuary sticklebacks matured later than the upstream fish. Population means varied little across treatments, indicating that the average effects of the different overwintering conditions were slight. The responses of individual families to a given overwintering treatment were highly variable in both populations, as reflected in significant family x treatment effects for all traits. Phenotypic correlations among life history traits were significant and positive for most traits, and were similar in magnitude in both populations. Differences in the relative degree of specialization for migration may in part explain variation in life history between these populations.  相似文献

Extracellular cathepsin D has been observed by various cytochemical methods at sites of tissue injury. However, the role of this enzyme in connective tissue matrix degradation is uncertain because there are no histochemical methods for determining whether or not the cathepsin D is active at such sites in living tissues. We considered that the combined use of a labelled tight-binding inhibitor with immunoprecipitation of the enzymes might overcome this problem. We have explored the application of derivatives of the inhibitor pepstatin, as only active cathepsin D binds pepstatin tightly. A series of N-pepstatinyl-N'-dinitrophenyl-alpha, omega-diaminoalkanes were synthesized with alkyl-chain lengths of two, four and six carbon atoms. These compounds were tight-binding inhibitors of human cathepsin D. In fluorescence-quenching titrations the dinitrophenyl groups were also fully available to bind high-affinity anti-dinitrophenyl antibody. It was shown by immunodiffusion in gels and by gel permeation chromatography that N-pepstatinyl-N'-dinitrophenyl-1,6-diaminohexane was a bifunction inhibitor able to bind cathepsin D and anti-dinitrophenyl antibody at the same time.  相似文献

Membership in important social groups can promote a positive identity. We propose and test an identity resource model in which personal self-esteem is boosted by membership in additional important social groups. Belonging to multiple important group memberships predicts personal self-esteem in children (Study 1a), older adults (Study 1b), and former residents of a homeless shelter (Study 1c). Study 2 shows that the effects of multiple important group memberships on personal self-esteem are not reducible to number of interpersonal ties. Studies 3a and 3b provide longitudinal evidence that multiple important group memberships predict personal self-esteem over time. Studies 4 and 5 show that collective self-esteem mediates this effect, suggesting that membership in multiple important groups boosts personal self-esteem because people take pride in, and derive meaning from, important group memberships. Discussion focuses on when and why important group memberships act as a social resource that fuels personal self-esteem.  相似文献

Altitudinal migration and dispersal is an important component of the life history of several temperate and tropical birds but remains poorly understood due to the limited success of mark and recapture techniques. Stable isotopes of hydrogen (deltaD) in rainfall, and to a lesser extent, carbon (delta13C) in plants are known to change with altitude and hence may provide the basis of a technique for tracking the altitudinal movements in birds and other wildlife. We investigated the potential for this technique by measuring delta13C, deltaD, and delta15N values in tail feathers of eight species of hummingbirds ( Phaethornis malaris, P. syrmatophorus, P. guy, Adelomyia melanogenys, Coeligena torquata, C. lutetiae, Metallura baroni, M. williami) along an altitudinal gradient (300-3,290 m asl) in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Feather delta13C and deltaD values were correlated and each changed significantly with elevation above 400 m. In general, we found good agreement between feather deltaD values and those predicted from a generalized relationship of precipitation and surface water deltaD with altitude. Similarly, feather delta13C values showed an enrichment of approximately 1.5 per thousand per 1,000 m over the linear portion of the elevational response. Stable-nitrogen isotope values were variable, and so did not provide useful information on elevation in birds, apart from trophic effects. Overall there appears to be good potential for using the (deltaD, delta13C) stable isotope approach to track altitudinal movements and to elucidate previously unrecognized patterns of life history variation in both temperate and tropical species that migrate across elevational isotopic gradients.  相似文献

A protein complex similar to muscle actomyosin and plasmodial myosin B has been isolated from Naegleria gruberi amoebae. This extract, which comprises approximately 0.7% of the total cell protein, has the solubility properties of actomyosin, displays Ca2+-activated, Mg2+-inhibited ATPase activity, forms microfilaments, and undergoes a strong superprecipitation reaction. Superprecipitation is initiated by ATP and is preceded by a very brief clearing phase. Although added Mg2+ is not essential for superprecipitation of the extract, the reaction proceeds maximally when 7 mM Mg2+ is provided. This extract does not appear to have a Ca2+ requirement, and superprecipitation is in fact inhibited by added Ca2+ ion at all concentrations greater than 0.1 mM. Both ATPase activity and superprecipitation of the actomyosin-like complex are inhibited by the sulfhydryl inhibitor salyrgan.  相似文献

Porcine synovium in organ culture produces a factor that causes chondrocytes to degrade their matrix. A quantitative assay for the factor, for which the cartilage of bovine nasal septum is used, is described. Evidence is presented that the catabolic factor is a protein.  相似文献

Cathepsin D, the major lysosomal aspartic proteinase, is responsible for the autolysis of cartilage at slightly acidic pH, and it has been suspected of making a significant contribution to the breakdown of the living tissue, such as is stimulated by retinol. Our finding, however, has been that neither inhibitory antibodies against cathepsin D, nor chemical inhibition with pepstatin, significantly decreases the rate of degradation of proteoglycan in the organ culture system. Most of the other proteinase inhibitors tested were similarly ineffective, although EDTA and 1,10-phenanthroline inhibited the resorption by a cytotoxic effect. We conclude that although cartilage matrix degradation has clear characteristics of a proteolytic process, the identity of the enzyme(s) responsible remains obscure.  相似文献
