Shallow-water vegetated estuarine habitats, notably seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh, are known to be important habitats for
many species of small or juvenile fish in temperate Australia. However, the movement of fish between these habitats is poorly
understood, and yet critical to the management of the estuarine fisheries resource. We installed a series of buoyant pop nets
in adjacent stands of seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh in order to determine how relative abundance of fishes varied through
lunar cycles. Nets were released in all habitats at the peak of the monthly spring tide for 12 months, and in the seagrass
habitat at the peak of the neap tide also. The assemblage of fish in each habitat differed during the spring tides. The seagrass
assemblage differed between spring and neap tide, with the neap tide assemblage showing greater abundances of fish, particularly
those species which visited the adjacent habitats when inundated during spring tides. The result supports the hypothesis that
fish move from the seagrass to the adjacent mangrove and saltmarsh during spring tides, taking advantage of high abundances
of zooplankton, and use seagrass as a refuge during lower tides. The restoration and preservation of mangrove and saltmarsh
utility as fish habitat may in some situations be linked to the proximity of available seagrass. 相似文献

The effect of cellulosic substrates on the production of extra-cellular cellulases and their cellulolytic activity inChaetomium globosum has been studied in shake flask cultures. Production of endoglucanase, exoglucanase and filter paper cellulase was highest with pure cellulose whereas -glucosidase was maximally induced by wheat straw. A suitable pretreatment for wheat straw was peracetic acid followed by NaOH and that of bagasse with NaOH for saccharification.

Cytogenetic effects in a group of traffic policemen in Cairo 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytogenetic effects in humans exposed to automobile exhaust. The induction of chromosome damage was studied in an exposed group of 28 traffic policemen with exposure of over 10 years and a control group of 15 policemen trainers from the Faculty of Police. The percentage of chromosomal aberrations as well as the mean sister-chromatid exchanges were significantly higher among the traffic policemen than in the control group. The cause for this elevated chromosome damage is most likely due to their exposure to pollutants from automobile exhaust, however, the increase is not correlated with the blood lead level or the duration of employment. On the other hand, the increase in chromosome damage among the traffic policemen is enhanced further by smoking. 相似文献

A rapid, one-step procedure has been developed for inducing direct organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis in cultures of Phaseolus coccineus L., P. acutifolius A., P. aureus L. [Vigna radiata L. Wilczek] and P. wrightii L. Development of somatic embryos and shoot buds occurred within 6–8 weeks of culture from intact seedlings raised on MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) medium supplemented with N6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Shoot buds or embryoids originated from subepidermal tissue of the regions adjacent to the shoot apex, hypocotyl and cotyledonary axils. While P. acutifolius and P. aureus were regenerated via shoot formation and P. wrightii by somatic embryogenesis, both embryogenesis and shoot regeneration were observed in P. coccineus. Relatively higher levels of BAP, 50–80 M, were found to be optimal for inducing regeneration while lower concentrations were ineffective. About 40–70 shoots and 70–250 somatic embryos were produced per responding seedling. Regenerated shoots and somatic embryos developed into whole plants on a basal medium or the one supplemented with 1 M naphthaleneacetic acid. 相似文献

Platelet serotonin (5-HT) content and uptake were studied in male SHR and WKY at various ages. Blood was withdrawn from the carotid artery under anesthesia and 5-HT levels determined from platelet rich plasma (PRP) using a HPLC technique coupled with an electrochemical detection method. Platelet 5-HT uptake was studied by incubating PRP at 37 degrees C for 10 sec with increasing concentrations of 3H-5HT. Lineweaver- Burk plots of 3H-5HT uptake were linear suggesting simple Michaelis- Menten uptake kinetics. The SHR had more platelets than age-matched controls and consequently a higher blood circulating pool of 5-HT. Nevertheless, the 5-HT platelet levels were similar to those of their age-matched rats. The 5 week-old SHR and WKY had greater numbers of platelets and higher 5-HT platelet levels than the older rats of both strains. The affinity constants (Km) and the maximal velocities (Vmax) of platelet 5-HT uptake did not differ significantly between the 12 week- and the 6 month-old SHR and WKY. These data suggest that the SHR do not show the same impairment in platelet 5-HT metabolism as observed in essential hypertension in man. 相似文献

The mammalian-type cytochrome c of the basidiomycete Ustilago sphaerogena contains in a single polypeptide chain of 107 residues, two histidine residues located at positions 18 and 33, and one methionine residue situated at position 80 (Bitar et al., 1972). The reaction of Ustilago ferricytochrome c with bromoacetate at neutral pH resulted in the modification of histidine-33, but not of histidine-18 or of the invariant methionine residue. The activities of Ustilago cytochrome c with mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase and with NADH-cytochrome c reductase were unaltered by the modification. The equilibrium constants for the formation of low-spin complexes of the ferrihaem octapeptide of horse cytochrome c (residues 14-21, including the haem bound covalently to cysteines 14 and 17) with imidazole, N(2)-acetylhistidine and monocarboxymethyl derivatives of N(2)-acetylhistidine were determined spectrophotometrically. Alkylation of the imidazole side-chain group of N(2)-acetylhistidine resulted in a marked decrease in its ability to form low-spin ferrihaem complexes. These results indicate that in Ustilago ferricytochrome c in solution histidine-33 is not involved in the central co-ordination complex. Since side-chain groups of residues other than histidine and methionine do not appear to be involved in the central complexes of other mammalian-type cytochromes c (Hettinger & Harbury, 1964, 1965; Myer & Harbury, 1965) it is likely that in Ustilago ferricytochrome c in solution at neutral pH, the side-chain groups of histidine-18 and methionine-80 are involved in the central co-ordination complex. A dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA) was developed as a fast and field applicable antibody detection tool for the diagnosis of human fascioliasis. The assay is performed using partially purified antigens from a species of Fasciola at 180 ng protein/dot (2 microliters) and serum samples at 1:20 dilution (1 microliter). Dot-ELISA results completely agreed with those of micro-ELISA. Antigen-coated nitrocellulose sheets stored for 3 mo at -20 C showed results identical to fresh sheets. Sera from patients with fascioliasis (n = 30) and other parasitic or viral infections (n = 120) were compared with sera from healthy controls (n = 14). Ninety samples can be tested within 90 min. The sensitivity, specificity, and speed of the assay may justify its use in laboratory and field studies. 相似文献

The cat is the primary model for neuromuscular research. However, sarcomere geometry, in particular thin-myofilament lengths of cat skeletal muscles, is not known, thus preventing adequate muscle modeling on the sarcomere level. The purpose of this study was to determine thin-myofilament lengths in cat skeletal muscle. It was found that average thin-myofilament lengths of cat tibialis anterior muscles (1.12 microns) were larger than the average values reported for frog (approximately 0.95 microns), rat (1.09 microns), and rabbit muscles (1.09 microns) and were smaller than the values reported for monkey (1.16 microns) and human skeletal muscles (1.27 microns). According to the cross-bridge theory of muscular contraction, this result implies that the range of sarcomere length on the ascending limb of the force-length relation for cat muscle is between those of frog, rat, and rabbit on the one side and monkey and human on the other side. It is speculated that the differences in thin-myofilament lengths of different animals are related to the functional demands of these muscles in everyday movement tasks. Chemically different classes of calcium channel blockers were examined in rats for their effects on behavior, tolerability and protection against maximal electroshock seizures (MES) and pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) induced seizures. In MES test at doses (mg/kg, ip) that were devoid of side effects, felodipine, 50, afforded 100% protection, while nimodipine, 5; pimozide, 10; and thioridazine, 25, showed 50 to 66% protection. Nifedipine, 10, and diltiazem, 50, showed 30 and 66% protection respectively, but were associated with side effects. Verapamil and loperamide were ineffective against MES and PTZ induced seizures. Nimodipine, 1 mg/kg, ip, was the most potent agent and produced 100% protection against PTZ. Equieffective doses were pimozide, 25, felodipine, 50, and thioridazine, 50. The rest of the calcium channel blockers showed marginal to moderate activity against chemoshock. The data obtained suggest that some calcium channel blockers possess anticonvulsant activity and may be considered as adjuvant therapeutic agents in epileptics refractory to conventional antiepileptic medication. 相似文献

We have analyzed, by means of density functional theory calculations and the embedded cluster model, the adsorption and spin-state
properties of Cr, Ni, Mo, and Pt deposited on a MgO crystal. We considered deposition at the Mg2+ site of a defect-free surface and at Li+ and Na+ sites of impurity-containing surfaces. To avoid artificial polarization effects, clusters of moderate sizes with no border
anions were embedded in simulated Coulomb fields that closely approximate the Madelung fields of the host surfaces. The interaction
between a transition metal atom and a surface results from a competition between Hund's rule for the adsorbed atom and the
formation of a chemical bond at the interface. We found that the adsorption energies of the metal atoms are significantly
enhanced by the cation impurities, and the adsorption energies of the low-spin states of spin-quenched complexes are always
more favorable than those of the high-spin states. Spin polarization effects tend to preserve the spin states of the adsorbed
atoms relative to those of the isolated atoms. The metal–support interactions stabilize the low-spin states of the adsorbed
metals with respect to the isolated metals, but the effect is not always enough to quench the spin. Spin quenching occurs
for Cr and Mo complexes at the Mg2+ site of the pure surface and at Li+ and Na+ sites of the impurity-containing surfaces. Variations of the spin-state properties of free metals and of the adsorption and
spin-state properties of metal complexes are correlated with the energies of the frontier orbitals. The electrostatic potential
energy curves provide further understanding of the nature of the examined properties. 相似文献
