Ten-day old kidney bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Shin-edogawa)were exposed to 2.0 and 4–0 parts 10–6 NO2, and0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 parts 10–6 O3 alone or in combinationfor 2, 4, and 7 d. The effects of these air pollutants wereexamined with respect to the growth, partitioning of assimilates,nitrogen uptake, soluble sugar content, and root respiration. Decreased dry matter production was significant with all treatmentsexcept 2.0 parts 10–6 NO2 and 0.1 parts 10–6 O3.Exposure to mixtures of the gases produced more severe suppressionof growth than exposure to the single gases. Root/shoot ratiowas significantly lowered at 7 d by the gas treatments otherthan 2.0 parts 10–6 NO2 and 0.1 parts 10–6 O3. Thetotal nitrogen content of plants was increased by all treatments;the higher percent of nitrogen found with O3 exposure will resultfrom the growth retardation which increases the concentrationof nitrogen in the plants because the absorption of nitrogenby roots was unaffected. The combination of O3 with NO2 significantlydecreased the assimilation of NO2 by the plants. The concentration of soluble sugars in roots was decreased bythe gas treatments. There was a strong positive correlationbetween soluble sugar content and dry weight of the roots harvestedat 7 d. Root respiration was relatively unchanged until 5 dand then decreased significantly at 7 d by 2.0 parts 10–6NO2 and 0–2 parts 10–6 O3. Retarded growth of theroots and the decreased root respiration may be due to diminishedtranslocation of sugars from leaves to roots caused by exposureto air pollutants.   1. Investigations were carried out to examine the effects of certainnucleic acid antimetabolites upon the germination of leaf mustardseed. Antimetabolites tested were 2 barbituric acid, variousuracil analogues, azaadenine, azaxanthine, azaguanine and benzimidazol.
  2. Among the antimetabolites tested, only 2-thiouracil showedastrong inhibitory action on the germination of Brassica junceavar. foliosa (BAILEY) Corn. "Akatirimen".
  3. This inhibitionby 2-thiouracil was relieved markedly by suchpyrimidine derivativesas uracil, thymine, orotic acid, uridylicacid and cytidylicacid, though these compounds did not showany promotive effecton the germination by themselves. On the other hand, sucha relieving effect was not shown bypurine derivatives suchas adenine, hypoxanthine and xanthine.
  4. Among other kinds ofcole-wort seeds tested, a similar thiouracilinhibition on seedgermination was observed only in a limitednumber of speciesor varieties.

Multiplicative error accounts for much of the size-scaling and leptokurtosis in fluctuating asymmetry. It arises when growth involves the addition of tissue to that which is already present. Such errors are lognormally distributed. The distribution of the difference between two lognormal variates is leptokurtic. If those two variates are correlated, then the asymmetry variance will scale with size. Inert tissues typically exhibit additive error and have a gamma distribution. Although their asymmetry variance does not exhibit size-scaling, the distribution of the difference between two gamma variates is nevertheless leptokurtic. Measurement error is also additive, but has a normal distribution. Thus, the measurement of fluctuating asymmetry may involve the mixing of additive and multiplicative error. When errors are multiplicative, we recommend computing log  E ( l ) − log  E ( r ), the difference between the logarithms of the expected values of left and right sides, even when size-scaling is not obvious. If l and r are lognormally distributed, and measurement error is nil, the resulting distribution will be normal, and multiplicative error will not confound size-related changes in asymmetry. When errors are additive, such a transformation to remove size-scaling is unnecessary. The effect of colchicine and vinblastine on cell aggregation was studied, using BHK cells and their transformed derivatives (pyBHK cells). When cells were dissociated with EDTA and the assay was made in a Ca2+-containing medium, the aggregation of transformed cells was prevented by colchicine and vinblastine, whereas the aggregation of normal cells was unaffected. When a Ca2+-free medium was used for aggregation, neither type of cell was influenced by these drugs. BHK and pyBHK cells, dissociated by trypsin in the presence of Ca2+, can aggregate only in the Ca2+-containing medium and the aggregation of both cell types was equally prevented by colchicine and vinblastine. Based on these results, it was concluded that colchicine and vinblastine inhibited the Ca2+-dependent mechanism of cell adhesion, but not the Ca2+-independent one which occurs in the Ca2+-free aggregation medium.  相似文献

To establish a basis for future taxonomic revisions and to infer the evolutionary traits of Trichomanes s.l. , one of two large filmy fern genera, molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted using chloroplast rbcL sequences. Sampling covered most of the global distribution range of this genus throughout the tropical and temperate zones, as well as all taxonomically significant species by the addition of 51 samples principally from Asia. The evolution of eight selected characters, which were adopted as taxonomic keys and/or putatively reflect morphological regression, was optimized on the retrieved most parsimonious rbcL trees, together with new observations on the stem anatomy of 45 species. The eight robust clades retrieved within Trichomanes in the rbcL phylogeny conflict with the existing classifications. Our results also suggest that the cup-shaped sorus, the primary diagnostic character of the genus, appears in parallel in the Hymenophyllum lineage, as demonstrated by Pleuromanes (typified by Trichomanes pallidum ) included in the lineage. The suggestion that the regressive character states are homoplastic apomorphies in the evolution of the frond size, stem thickness, root system, and stem anatomy (stele and cortex) probably illustrates a strong tendency towards adaptive evolutionary transition in Trichomanes . © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 155 , 1–27.  相似文献

Summary

Vitellogenesis in ticks is known to be induced by engorgement and mating. In this paper, the synthetic pyrethroid cypermethrin (CyM) is shown to induce production of yolk protein precursor, vitellogenin (Vg), and ovarian development in unengorged mated adult female Ornithodoros moubata. The levels of Vg found in the hemolymph and ovarian development induced by CyM were dose-dependent. i.e., CyM doses of more than 0.2 and 1.0 μg/tick were needed for significant increase of Vg titer in the hemolymph and yolk deposition in oocytes, respectively. Immunological and electrophoretical analyses of Vg and Vitellin (Vn) induced by CyM were identical with those induced by engorgement. Vg titer induced by CyM in unengorged females followed approximately the same time course as that in the normal engorged females. However, Vg titer induced by CyM continued to increase after day 8 and reached a maximum (95 μg/μ1) on day 10 after treatment, while Vg titer induced by engorgement decreased again after reaching a maximum (60 μg/μ1) on day 6, correlated with yolk Vn deposition in oocytes. Ovarian development induced by even high doses (10 or 20 μg/tick) of CyM was slow compared to normal development stimulated by engorgement. Abstract. The metafemoral spring (jumping organ) was known previously only from all Alticinae (Chrysomelidae), one genus of Bruchidae, and two species of Rhynchaeninae (Curculionidae). Here this spring is reported from three subfamilies, seven tribes and twenty-two genera of Curculionidae (three Rhychaeninae, one Erirhininae (Derelomini), and eighteen Ceutorhynchinae) and also from five genera of Buprestidae (four Agrilinae and one Trachyinae). Jumping in Hexapoda is discussed, specifically in the other jumping Coleopteran families that were examined for the presence of the spring (e.g. Melandryidae, Mordellidae, Scraptiidae, Eucinetidae, Limnichidae, Scirtidae and Anthribidae). The phylogenetic value of the metafemoral spring is still unclear; however, there are indications that it is useful in assessing relationships among weevil tribes. As in Alticinae, Curculionidae and Buprestidae have constant intra-generic spring morphology and inter-generic differences. The spring in Bruchidae, Curculionidae and Buprestidae has a simpler morphology than in the Alticinae, but still possesses the features necessary for jumping (metatibial extension). The metafemoral spring has apparently evolved independently in Alticinae, Bruchidae, Curculionidae and Buprestidae, and is an example of convergent evolution.  相似文献

Cells dissociated from neural retina of 3.5-day-old chick embryos transdifferentiated extensively into lens cells under the conditions of a cell culture for 3 to 4 weeks. In early satges of cell culture by about 10 days, cultures consisted of small round cells often with cytoplasmic processes(N-cells) and flattened epithelial cells (E-cells). Only N-cells were stained with a fluorescent dye Merocyanine 540. When cells harvested from early cultures were separated into two fractions by centrifugation in Percoll gradient, the specific activity of choline acetyltransferase was much higher in the fraction consisting mainly of N-cells than in other fraction mainly of E-cells. Continuous daily observations as well as cinematographic observations of living cultures indicate that lentoid bodies were often formed in the locations where clusters of N-cells had been found in early stages of culturing. The possibility of transdifferentiation of N-cell clusters into lentoid bodies is discussed.  相似文献

Mutant chickens, Hy-1 and Hy-2, show abnormalities in growth and differentiation of the lens epithelium. In this study, neural retinal cells (NR cells) from 3.5-day-old embryos of these mutants were cultured, and the differentiation in vitro was compared with the cells of the normal strain. Hy-1 cells in vitro were characterized by a delay in the first appearance of neuronal cells (N-cells) and by excessive production of this cell type at later stages. By contrast, the Hy-2 cells were indistinguishable from the normal cells in the early phase of culturing. In spite of the marked difference of Hy-1 NR cells in neuronal differentiation up to about 7 days in culture, the transdifferentiation of lens and pigmented cells occurred to a similar extent and with the same time schedule as cultures of normal cells. A number of lentoid bodies were formed by about 10 days. The relative composition of the three major classes of crystallins in transdifferentiated lens cells was almost identical between normal and Hy-1 strains. The results were discussed in comparison with the previous results of cell culture of NR of 8-day embryonic mutant chickens, and it was concluded that the process of transdifferentiation in cell culture is different between NR from 3.5-day-old and 8-day-old embryos.  相似文献

To identify the surface features of Holospora obtusa during its differentiation from the reproductive short form to the infectious long form, bacteria of four different buoyant densities were isolated by Percoll density gradient centrifugation of homogenates of host cells or isolated macronuclei, and examined with a scanning electron microscope. Bacteria of buoyant density 1.09 g/ml were reproductive short forms as well as cells at various stages in the elongation process including fully elongated ones. Bacteria of buoyant densities 1.11 g/ml and 1.13 g/ml were premature long forms and those of 1.16 g/ml were mature infectious long forms. Bacteria of buoyant density 1.09 g/ml had an entirely rough surface while those of buoyant densities 1.11 g/ml and 1.13 g/ml were smooth and had wale-like stripes on their surface. A small tapered tip was observed at one end of the bacteria of buoyant density 1.13 g/ml. Bacteria of buoyant density 1.16 g/ml had an entirely smooth surface, but one end always showed a rough surface; this locally differentiated surface of the special tip of the infectious long form may be responsible for both the nuclear and species specificities of the infectivity of H. obtusa. These observations indicate that the surface of H. obtusa changes during differentiation and the special tip develops in bacteria of buoyant density 1.13 g/ml.  相似文献
