1. Employing field-deployed mesocosms, we examined the effects of 12-h pulse and 20-day press (continuous) exposures of the common agricultural insecticide, imidacloprid, on nymph abundance, emergence patterns and adult body size of Epeorus spp. (Heptageniidae) and Baetis spp. (Baetidae).
2. In press exposures, reduced nymph density was driven by reduced survivorship; in pulse exposures, reduced nymph density may reflect increased emergence because of stress.
3. Once exposed to imidacloprid, Epeorus and Baetis mayflies developed less and emerged smaller than their control counterparts. Concentrations as low as 0.1  μ g L−1 (12-h pulse) reduced head length in Baetis and thorax length in Epeorus .
4. In all of the Baetis and Epeorus examined, effects were only found in males. Male survivorship and body size can affect population dynamics. Sublethal doses of this widely applied agricultural insecticide have the potential to reduce reproductive success of mayfly populations.  相似文献

Transmission of prunus necrotic ringspot virus using plum pollen and thrips   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) was transmitted to cucumber but not to peach seedlings after they were dusted with infective plum pollen and caged with 8–10 thrips per seedling for 24 h. When the pollen was taken from three plum trees shown by mechanical inoculation tests to have highly infective flower buds and pollen, the transmission rates to cucumber seedlings were 56% with Thrips tabaci and 66% with a mixture of five thrips species collected from Ageratum houstonianum flowers. However, the transmission rate averaged only 7% when pollen was taken from five other plum trees which had flowers with less infectivity in sap transmission tests. In 1990 T. imaginis, T. tabaci and T. australis, which were present in the mixture of thrips from A. houstonianum, also formed the major part of the thrips population in flowers of the plum trees used as the pollen source.  相似文献

1. The effects of omnivorous exotic species on native communities are often difficult to predict because of the broad diets and behavioural flexibility of the omnivore, and the diverse abiotic and biotic characteristics of invaded systems. We investigated experimentally the effects of a gradient of density of the introduced, omnivorous red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Decapoda: Cambaridae) on two stream communities in southern California, U.S.A. 2. The Ventura River is a clear, flowing stream with a cobble substratum, with abundant algae but low densities of large invertebrates, small herbivores and snails. The Santa Ynez River at the time of the study consisted of a series of drying pools underlain by sand, with abundant charophytes, large predatory invertebrates and herbivores, including snails. 3. In the Ventura River, periphyton biomass and inorganic sediment decreased with increasing crayfish abundance, but in the Santa Ynez River, periphyton and sediment were unrelated to crayfish densities. 4. In the Ventura River, the biomass and density of all benthic invertebrates combined, chironomids, micropredators, the meiofauna (chydorid cladocerans, copepods and ostracods), and specific predatory and herbivorous taxa, as well as taxon richness, were negatively related to crayfish density. In the Santa Ynez River, the biomass and average body size of benthic invertebrates, predatory invertebrates, herbivores and chironomids, but not total invertebrate density or taxon richness, were negatively related to crayfish density. 5. Fewer large predatory invertebrates and snails (Physella gyrina) in both streams, and baetid mayflies in the Ventura River, were visible at night in channels where crayfish were abundant. Snails responded to crayfish by moving above the water line in the Santa Ynez River, but not in the Ventura River. 6. We suggest that the same omnivore had different effects on these neighbouring streams because of crayfish predation on large invertebrates in the Santa Ynez River and the scarcity of such prey in the Ventura River, leading to increased crayfish grazing on periphyton, and reductions in periphyton‐associated invertebrates, in the Ventura River.  相似文献

Most of the methane (CH4) emission from rice fields is derived from plant photosynthates, which are converted to CH4. Rice cluster I (RC-1) archaea colonizing the rhizosphere were found to be the methanogens responsible for this process. Hence, RC-1 methanogens seem to play a crucial role in emission of the greenhouse gas CH4. We determined the community composition and activity of methanogens colonizing the roots of eight different rice cultivars after growth on both Italian rice soil and river bank soil, which contained different communities of methanogenic archaea. The community composition was analyzed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and cloning/sequencing of the archaeal 16S rRNA gene and the mcrA gene coding for a subunit of the methyl coenzyme M reductase. When grown on rice field soil, the methanogenic community of the different rice cultivars was always dominated by RC-1 methanogens. In contrast, roots were colonized by Methanomicrobiales when grown on river bank soil, in which RC-1 methanogens were initially not detectable. Roots colonized with Methanomicrobiales compared with RC-1 exhibited lower CH4 production and CH4 emission rates. The results show that the type of methanogens colonizing rice roots has a potentially important impact on the global CH4 cycle.  相似文献
