Nutrition plays a key role in many aspects of health and dietary imbalances are major determinants of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. Adequate nutrition is particularly essential during critical periods in early life (both pre- and postnatal). Bench testing is a useful method to characterize the response of different automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) devices under well-controlled conditions. However, previous models did not consider the diversity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients’ characteristics and phenotypes. The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to design a new bench test for realistically simulating an OSA patient’s night, and to implement a one-night example of a typical female phenotype for comparing responses to several currently-available APAP devices. We developed a novel approach aimed at replicating a typical night of sleep which includes different disturbed breathing events, disease severities, sleep/wake phases, body postures and respiratory artefacts. The simulated female OSA patient example that we implemented included periods of wake, light sleep and deep sleep with positional changes and was connected to ten different APAP devices. Flow and pressure readings were recorded; each device was tested twice. The new approach for simulating female OSA patients effectively combined a wide variety of disturbed breathing patterns to mimic the response of a predefined patient type. There were marked differences in response between devices; only three were able to overcome flow limitation to normalize breathing, and only five devices were associated with a residual apnea-hypopnea index of <5/h. In conclusion, bench tests can be designed to simulate specific patient characteristics, and typical stages of sleep, body position, and wake. Each APAP device behaved differently when exposed to this controlled model of a female OSA patient, and should lead to further understanding of OSA treatment.  相似文献

It has long been debated whether the mind consists of specialized and independently evolving modules, or whether and to what extent a general factor accounts for the variance in performance across different cognitive domains. In this study, we used a hierarchical Bayesian model to re-analyse individual level data collected on seven primate species (chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans, gorillas, spider monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys and long-tailed macaques) across 17 tasks within four domains (inhibition, memory, transposition and support). Our modelling approach evidenced the existence of both a domain-specific factor and a species factor, each accounting for the same amount (17%) of the observed variance. In contrast, inter-individual differences played a minimal role. These results support the hypothesis that the mind of primates is (at least partially) modular, with domain-specific cognitive skills undergoing different evolutionary pressures in different species in response to specific ecological and social demands.  相似文献

Among the thermophilic fishes that have become established in the north-western Mediterranean as a consequence of sea warming, the yellowmouth barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis Cuvier, 1829) appears to be one of the most successful and abundant in the coastal rocky environment, having increasingly become the object of recreational and commercial exploitation in the study area. Lure-fishing sessions were carried out from May 2016 to November 2018 in the Catalan Sea (NE Spain) at dawn and dusk, with the aim of providing new insight into the behavioural, spatial and feeding ecology and vulnerability to angling of this poorly known species. Generalized mixed-effects linear models showed that S. viridensis is a crepuscular inshore dweller, whose vulnerability to angling is significantly influenced by solar and lunar light intensities, being highest in the pre-spawn and spawning periods. Asymmetries between dawn and dusk activity patterns were detected, evidently related to a drop in aggressiveness at dusk following the spawning period. The simple study design adopted may be applied to other contexts, aiming to the recognition of several levels of fish vulnerability to angling.  相似文献

Summary In a study of the possible relationship between human fragile sites, chromosomal rearrangements related to neoplasia, and chromosome regions involved in evolutionary changes, we have found that 17 fragile sites related to cancer, 15 fragile sites not related to cancer, and 17 non-fragile regions also related to human malignancy correspond or are close to bands involved in rearrangements that have taken place during chromosomal evolution in primates.  相似文献

A synaptonemal complex (SC) analysis was carried out in male mice heterozygous (CHT/+) for three Robertsonian translocations. All pachytene preparations studied showed the presence of three trivalents. At early pachytene, the nonhomologous centromeric regions of the acrocentric chromosomes were unpaired. Heterosynapsis subsequently took place with complete pairing of the trivalents. Association between one of the three trivalents and the sex vesicle was observed in 30.4% of the nuclei. Association between the unpaired regions of two trivalents was present in 14.4% of the cells, suggesting that the relationship between unpaired regions of structural rearrangements and the X-Y bivalent may simply reflect the tendency of unpaired regions to establish end-to-end associations or heterosynapses among them, which are usually resolved during the pachytene stage of prophase I. Since the sex bivalent always has unpaired regions, these associations often affect the sex chromosomes.  相似文献

Summary Sperm chromosome complements have been studied in a man heterozygous for a reciprocal translocation t(2;5)(p11;q15). Human sperm chromosomes were obtained after fertilization of zona-free hamster eggs. A total of 75 human sperm metaphases were analysed. Of the complements studied, 59 (78.6%) resulted from a 2:2 segregation and 16 (21.3%) from a 3:1 segregation, 4:0 segregation was not observed. Our results indicate that at least 36% of sperm complements were unbalanced with respect to the translocation. The frequency of other chromosome anomalies unrelated to the translocation was 16%.  相似文献

Retrospective studies have shown the occurrence of episodes of deep or superficial fungal infections in 58 to 81% of HIV/AIDS patients as a result of impairment of cell immunity. We describe a case of disseminated cutaneous dermatophytoses caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis in a patients with AIDS. Diagnostic and therapeutic problems in relation to this unsual presentation are emphasized as well as the importance of an early mycologic diagnosis to prescribe antifungal therapy.  相似文献

The progression of first meiotic prophase and synaptonemal complex (SC) formation in female rats, Rattus norvegicus S.D., is described through the analysis of the different stages of the first meiotic prophase, and confirms the high synchrony of the process in this species. Leptotene is a stage of very short duration and since pairing of the homologues begins very early, only a leptotene-zygotene stage can be distinguished. The progression of pairing during zygotene is asynchronous. The morphology of the SCs is similar to that described in other species. During diplotene and before desintegration of the lateral elements, desynapsis takes place.In some oocytes a double or even multiple nature of lateral elements was seen. Associations between SCs and nucleoli or nucleolar filaments are frequent. The presence of fragmented SCs can be interpreted as a technical artifact.  相似文献
