Norway spruce (Picea abies) was exposed to nutrient solutions containing a range of aluminium (Al) concentrations at several pH levels (3.2, 4 and 5). Root growth was reduced by 100 µM and 400 µM Al at pH 4 and 5, but at pH 3.2 only by 400 µM Al. The Al content of the roots increased with increasing pH. The Al content of the roots was higher at the root tips than at the older root parts at all pH values. Using X-ray microanalysis it could be shown that higher levels of Al at increased pH were mainly due to increased Al contents in root cortex cell walls. In seedlings, mycorrhizal with Pisolithus tinctorius or Lactarius rufus, the Al concentration of cortex cell walls was higher when nitrate (NO3) rather than ammonium (NH4) was the nitrogen (N) source.  相似文献

Long-range sex pheromones have been subjected to substantial research with a particular focus on their biosynthesis, peripheral perception, central processing and the resulting orientation behaviour of perceivers. Fundamental to the research on sex attractants was the assumption that they primarily coordinate species recognition. However, especially when they are produced by the less limiting sex (usually males), the evolution of heightened condition dependence might be expected and long-range sex pheromones might, therefore, also inform about a signaller''s quality. Here we provide, to our knowledge, the first comprehensive study of the role of a male''s long-range pheromone in mate choice that combines chemical analyses, video observations and field experiments with a multifactorial manipulation of males'' condition. We show that the emission of the long-distance sex pheromone of the burying beetle, Nicrophorus vespilloides is highly condition-dependent and reliably reflects nutritional state, age, body size and parasite load—key components of an individual''s somatic state. Both, the quantity and ratio of the pheromone components were affected but the time invested in pheromone emission was largely unaffected by a male''s condition. Moreover, the variation in pheromone emission caused by the variation in condition had a strong effect on the attractiveness of males in the field, with males in better nutritional condition, of older age, larger body size and bearing less parasites being more attractive. That a single pheromone is influenced by so many aspects of the somatic state and causes such variation in a male''s attractiveness under field conditions was hitherto unknown and highlights the need to integrate indicator models of sexual selection into pheromone research.  相似文献

Although it is well established that ectomycorrhizas improve the mineral nutrition of forest trees, there has been little evidence that they mediate uptake of divalent cations such as Mg. We grew nonmycorrhizal seedlings and seedlings mycorrhizal with Paxillus involutus Batsch in a sand culture system with two compartments separated by a 45-μm Nylon mesh. Hyphae, but not roots, can penetrate this net. Labeling the compartment only accessible to hyphae with 25Mg showed that hyphae of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus transported Mg to their host plant. No label was found in nonmycorrhizal control plants. Our data support the idea that ectomycorrhizas are important for the Mg nutrition of forest trees. Cation exchange capacity and lead sorption in ectomycorrhizal fungi   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Two ectomycorrhizal fungi, Paxillus involutus 533 and Laccaria bicolor S238, differing greatly in their mycelial characteristics, were investigated with regard to their cation exchange capacity and Pb-binding capacity in vitro after growth with either NO3 - or NH4 + as N source. The CECs of 800–1200 mol g-1 dry weight for Paxillus involutus 533 and 2000–3000 mol g-1 dry weight for Laccaria bicolor S238, were high compared to plant roots. The fungal mycelium also had a high Pb sorption capacity. It was higher in Laccaria bicolor S238 than in Paxillus involutus 533 and higher after pregrowth in NO3 - compared to NH4 +. Both the higher CEC and the higher Pb sorption capacity of Laccaria bicolor S238 compared to Paxillus involutus 533 might have been the result of the hydrophilic nature of the of Laccaria bicolor S238 mycelium. It would have absorbed the solutions better than the hydrophobic mycelium of Paxillus involutus 533. X-ray microanalysis of the cell walls revealed that the Pb content of the cell walls was higher in Paxillus involutus 533 than in Laccaria bicolor S238. Nevertheless, electron dense deposits in the cell walls of Laccaria bicolor S238 contained large amounts of Pb, P and S. Thus, while Pb was evenly distributed in the cell walls of Paxillus involutus 533, Pb was accumulated in electron dense deposits in Laccaria bicolor S238. The results are discussed in view of their significance for the mycorrhizal symbiosis.  相似文献

High levels of aluminium in the soil solution of forest soils cause stress to forest trees. Within the soil profile, pH and aluminium concentration in the soil solution vary considerably with soil depth. pH strongly influences the speciation of A1 in solution, and is a factor when considering toxicity of A1 to roots. Norway spruce ( Picea abies [L.] Karst.) seedlings were grown for 7 weeks in nutrient solutions at pH 3.2, 4.0 or 5.0 containing 0, 100 or 400 µ M A1. At the end of this period, seedling growth, the cation exchange capacity of the roots and the amount of exchangeable Ca and Mg in roots were determined. A1 concentrations in whole roots, root segments, and in needles were measured. Using X‐ray microanalysis, the concentrations of Al, Ca, Mg and P were determined in cortical cell walls. We wanted to test the hypotheses that (1) the amount of Al bound to cation exchange sites can be used as a marker for Al toxicity and (2) the Mg concentration of needles is controlled by the amount of Mg bound to cation exchange sites. Low pH reduced the inhibition of Al on root growth and shoot length. Both low pH and Al lowered the concentration of Ca and Mg in needles. Al concentrations in the roots decreased as the pH decreased. In the roots, Al displaced Mg and Ca from binding sites at the root cortical cell walls. A comparison of the effects of Al at the different pH values on root growth and Mg concentration in the needles, suggests that, at pH 5.0, an Al fraction in the apoplast inhibits root growth, but does not affect Mg uptake. This fraction of Al is not available for transport to the shoots. In contrast, Mg uptake is strongly affected by Al at pH 3.2, although only very low levels of Al were detected in the roots. Thus, Al accumulation in the apoplast is a positive marker for Al effects on root growth, but not Mg uptake. The Mg concentration of needles is not controlled by the amount of Mg bound to cation exchange sites.  相似文献

A sand culture system was developed for growth of mycorrhizal seedlings under monoxenic conditions, with frequently renewed nutrient solution The composition of the nutrient solution resembled that of a forest soil solution, based on long-term measurements from forest sites at Soiling, northern Germany. Seedlings of Picea abies (L.) Karst. inoculated with Lactarius rufus (Scop.) Fr. were grown in this culture system. Plants developed rapidly, having almost totally mycorrhizal root systems. Nitrate at 2.7 mM in the nutrient solution and applied over a 13 week period had no negative effect on mycorrhizal development. Ammonium at 2.7 mM reduced the degree of mycorrhizal infection slightly, in such a way that the degree of mycorrhizal infection was reduced to a much less extent than the total number of root lips. Hence, the impact of NH+4 may be primarily on root development and not on mycorrhizal fungal colonization. When the concentrations of NO-3 and NH+4 used in the present study are compared to those found in forest soil solutions, NO-3 and NH4+ would not appear to influence mycorrhizal development negatively under natural conditions. Aluminium at 0.8 mM and applied over a 13 week period reduced Mg uptake into roots and needles by 52 and 64%, respectively, resulting in needle chlorosis and strongly reduced photosynthetic activity. From a comparison of this study with others, no major difference in physiological response to aluminium exposure between non-mycorrhizal seedlings and seedlings colonized with Lactarius rufus was found.  相似文献

Increasing evidence suggests that forest soils in central and northern Europe as well as in North America have been significantly acidified by acid deposition during the last decades. The present investigation was undertaken to examine the effect of soil acidity on rooting patterns of 40-year-old Norway spruce trees by comparing fine and coarse roots among four stands which differed in soil acidity and Mg (and Ca) nutrition. The coarse root systems of four to five 40-year-old Norway spruce trees per stand were manually excavated. The sum of cross sectional area (CSA) at 60 cm soil depth and below of all vertical coarse roots, as a measure of vertical rooting intensity, was strongly reduced with increasing subsoil acidity of the stands. This pattern was confirmed when 5 additional acidic sites were included in the analysis. Fine root biomass in the mineral soil estimated by repeated soil coring was strongly reduced in the heavily acidified stands, but increased in the humic layer. Using ingrowth cores and a screen technique, we showed that the higher root biomass in the humic layer of the more acidic stands was a result of higher root production. Thus, reduced fine root biomass and coarse root CSA in deeper soil layers coincided with increased root growth in the humic layer. Root mineral analysis showed Ca/Al ratios decreased with decreasing base saturation in the deeper mineral soil (20–40 cm). In the top mineral soil, only minor differences were observed among stands. In general, low Ca/Al ratios coincided with low fine root biomass. Calcium/aluminum ratios determined in cortical cell walls using X-ray microanalysis showed a similar pattern as Ca/Al ratios based on analysis of whole fine roots, although the amplitude of changes among the stands was much greater. Aluminum concentrations and Ca/Al ratios in cortical cell walls were at levels found to inhibit root growth of spruce seedlings in laboratory experiments. The data support the idea that Al (or Ca/Al ratios) and acid deposition-induced Mg (and possibly Ca) deficiency are important factors influencing root growth and distribution in acidic forest soils. Changes in carbon partitioning within the root system may contribute to a reduction in deep root growth.  相似文献

Studies addressing brain correlates of emotional personality have remained sparse, despite the involvement of emotional personality in health and well-being. This study investigates structural and functional brain correlates of psychological and physiological measures related to emotional personality. Psychological measures included neuroticism, extraversion, and agreeableness scores, as assessed using a standard personality questionnaire. As a physiological measure we used a cardiac amplitude signature, the so-called E κ value (computed from the electrocardiogram) which has previously been related to tender emotionality. Questionnaire scores and E κ values were related to both functional (eigenvector centrality mapping, ECM) and structural (voxel-based morphometry, VBM) neuroimaging data. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were obtained from 22 individuals (12 females) while listening to music (joy, fear, or neutral music). ECM results showed that agreeableness scores correlated with centrality values in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex, and the ventral striatum (nucleus accumbens). Individuals with higher E κ values (indexing higher tender emotionality) showed higher centrality values in the subiculum of the right hippocampal formation. Structural MRI data from an independent sample of 59 individuals (34 females) showed that neuroticism scores correlated with volume of the left amygdaloid complex. In addition, individuals with higher E κ showed larger gray matter volume in the same portion of the subiculum in which individuals with higher E κ showed higher centrality values. Our results highlight a role of the amygdala in neuroticism. Moreover, they indicate that a cardiac signature related to emotionality (E κ) correlates with both function (increased network centrality) and structure (grey matter volume) of the subiculum of the hippocampal formation, suggesting a role of the hippocampal formation for emotional personality. Results are the first to show personality-related differences using eigenvector centrality mapping, and the first to show structural brain differences for a physiological measure associated with personality.  相似文献

Non-mycorrhizal spruce seedlings (Picea abies Karst.) and spruce seedlings colonized with Lactarius rufus (Scop.) Fr. or two strains of Paxillits involutus (Batsch) Fr. were grown in an axenic silica sand culture system with frequently renewed nutrient solution. After successful mycorrhizal colonization, the seedlings were exposed to 1 μM PbCI2 for 19 weeks. The degree of infection in all of the mycorrhizal treatments approached 100% during the experiment and was not affected by exposure to Pb. However, the number of root tips per root dry weight and the shoot: root ratio, both in the non-mycorrhizal and the mycorrhizal seedlings, had decreased after the 19 week treatment with PbCl2 Using X-ray microanalysis, the distribution and concentration of Pb in the tissues of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal root tips were compared. In the mycorrhizae of seedlings exposed to Pb no significant accumulation of Pb in the hyphal mantle or in fungal cell walls of the Hartig net were detected. Lead accumulated primarily in the cortex cell walls both of non-mycorrhizal and mycorrhizal root tips. No significant difference of Pb concentrations in root cortex cell walls of non-mycorrhizal and mycorrhizal seedlings was found; except for seedlings colonized with Paxillus involutus strain 537. However, at the endodermis no effect of mycorrhizal fungal colonization on the Pb tissue concentration was detected. The presence of the fungal sheath did not prevent Pb from reaching the root cortex. The endodermis acted as a barrier to Pb radial transport in both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal seedling roots.  相似文献
