In vivo EMG biofeedback in violin and viola pedagogy

In vivo EMG biofeedback was found to be an effective pedagogical tool for removing unwanted left-hand tension in nine violin and viola players. Improvement occurred rapidly and persisted throughout a 5-month follow-up period. Further studies will be necessary to assess the effect of biofeedback independent of placebo effects. The brevity of the method and the magnitude of improvement warrant further investigation.     

Transcriptional control, translation and function of the products of the five open reading frames of the Escherichia coli nir operon

Five open reading frames designated nirB, nirD, nirE, nirC and cysG have been identified from the DNA sequence of the Escherichia coli nir operon. Complementation experiments established that the NirB, NirD and CysG polypeptides are essential and sufficient for NADH-dependent nitrite reductase activity (EC 1.6.6.4). A series of plasmids has been constructed in which each of the open reading frames has been fused in-phase with the beta-galactosidase gene, lacZ. Rates of beta-galactosidase synthesis during growth in different media revealed that nirB, -D, -E and -C are transcribed from the FNR-dependent promoter, p-nirB, located just upstream of the nirB gene: expression is co-ordinately repressed by oxygen and induced during anaerobic growth. Although the nirB, -D and -C open reading frames are translated into protein, no translation of nirE mRNA was detected. The cysG gene product is expressed from both p-nirB and a second, FNR-independent promoter, p-cysG, located within the nirC gene. No NADH-dependent nitrite reductase activity was detected in extracts from bacteria lacking either NirB or NirD, but a mixture of the two was as active as an extract from wild-type bacteria. Reconstitution of enzyme activity in vitro required stoichiometric quantities of NirB and NirD and was rapid and independent of the temperature during mixing. NirD remained associated with NirB during the initial stages of purification of the active enzyme, suggesting that NirD is a second structural subunit of the enzyme.     

Penetration of analogues of H2O and CO2 in proteins studied by room temperature phosphorescence of tryptophan.

The influence of the protein matrix on the reactivity of external molecules with a species buried within the protein interior is considered in two general ways: (1) there may be structural fluctuations that allow for the diffusive penetration of the small molecules and/or (2) the external molecule may react over a distance. As a means to study the protein matrix, a reactive species within the protein can be formed by exciting tryptophan to the triplet state, and then the reaction of the triplet-state molecule with an external molecule can be monitored by a decrease in phosphorescence. In this work, the quenching ability (i.e., reactivity) was examined for H2S, CS2, and NO2- acting on tryptophan phosphorescence in parvalbumin, azurin, horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase. A comparison of charged versus uncharged quenchers (H2S vs SH- and CS2 vs NO2-) reveals that the uncharged molecules are much more effective than charged species in quenching the phosphorescence of fully buried tryptophan, whereas the quenching for exposed tryptophan is relatively independent of the charge of the quencher. This is consistent with the view that uncharged triatomic molecules can penetrate the protein matrix to some extent. The energies of activation of the quenching reaction are low for the charged quenchers and higher for the uncharged CS2. A model is presented in which the quenchability of a buried tryptophan is inversely related to the distance from the surface when diffusion through the protein is the rate-limiting step.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

An inexpensive photosynthetic irradiance sensor for ecological field studies

The design and characteristics of inexpensive and simply constructed equal-energy response photosynthetic irradiance sensors is described for use particularly where several cells are required in comparative ecological studies either above or below water. The dimensions of the sensors can be changed proportionally to suit different applications or components. The response of the sensor to irradiance at varying angles corresponds very closely to that required by the cosine law. The sensor is comparatively insensitive to other environmental variables in field use and gave a stable output; the long term drift was proportional to electrical output but in continuous use, drift is regular and could reach -0.08 year^-1 of the total. The spectral range and cosine response is discussed in comparison to other more expensive (x 5–10) commercially available, sensors and to local standards.     

Locomotor behavior and skeletal morphology of two sympatric pitheciine monkeys,Pithecia pithecia and Chiropotes satanas

Field observations of two sympatric pitheciine species reveal that the positional repertoire of the white-faced saki, Pithecia pithecia, is dominated by leaping behaviors, whereas the bearded saki, Chiropotes satanas, is predominantly quadrupedal. Examination and comparison of the postcranial skeletal morphologies and limb proportions of these species display numerous features associated with their respective locomotor behaviors. These observations accord with associations found in other primate and mammalian groups and with predictions based on theoretical and experimental biomechanics. Preliminary observations of the skeletal morphology of Cacajao calvus demonstrate a marked similarity to that of Chiropotes. The fossil platyrrhine Cebupithecia sarmientoi displays greater similarity to Pithecia, suggesting that its positional repertoire also included significant leaping and clinging behaviors.     

Development of eggs,larvae and pelagic juveniles of three Indo-Pacific ostraeiid fishes (Tetraodontiformes):Ostracion meleagris,Lactoria fornasini andL. diaphana

The eggs, larvae and pelagic juveniles ofOstracion meleagris, Lactoria fornasini andLactoria diaphana were identified from reared and field collected specimens from Hawaii, Japan, Australia and the eastern Pacific. Eggs are large and pelagic with limited chorion ornamentation and a cluster of oil droplets. At hatching, larvae are well developed, rotund, and enclosed in a dermal sac. The sac disappears and dermal plates form prior to notochord flexion. Larvae of the three species can be distinguished by their pigment patterns and development of the carapace of ossified dermal plates. Eggs of the three species could not be distinguished. The larval stage ends at a small size (< 6 mm) but the juveniles may grow to a substantial size while remaining pelagic.L. diaphana matures and spawns while pelagic in the eastern Pacific.     

Experience with Coeliac Axis Compression Syndrome

Seven patients with “coeliac axis compression syndrome” are reported. Five were treated surgically, but only two did well. A survey of 200 healthy adults showed epigastric bruits in 6·5%; only one of these had dyspepsia, though dyspepsia was present in 12·5% overall.Caution is urged in attributing a causal relationship between coeliac axis compression and pain and in proceeding to arteriography when compression is suspected on clinical grounds.
