Within butterflies and moths, adult hematophagy is limited to species within the vampire moth genus Calyptra. These moths are placed within the subfamily Calpinae, whose other members are known to exhibit a broad range of feeding behaviors including those that can be considered 'piercers' of fruits or other hosts and 'tear feeders'. Here, we reconstruct a phylogenetic hypothesis of Calpinae using molecular data to test whether hematophagy in Calyptra arose from plant or animal-related behaviors. We use a Bayesian method of ancestral state reconstruction to determine the most likely feeding behaviors for the subtribes and genera within this lineage. 相似文献

Abstract The sequence of the pig ob cDNA, which codes for the protein leptin, has been determined by screening a pig adipose cDNA library with an RT‐PCR amplified cDNA fragment of this gene. The 501 bp ob cDNA has 89% identity to the human ob cDNA, 92% identity to the bovine ob cDNA, 84% identity to the mouse ob cDNA and 84% identity to the rat ob cDNA. At the amino acid level, pig leptin which codes for a protein with a predicted molecular weight of 18,661‐dalton, has 86% identity to human leptin, 93% identity to bovine leptin, 84% identity to rat leptin and 84% identity to mouse leptin. RT‐PCR screening of RNA isolated from pig adipose, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, pancreas, stomach, kidney, spleen and jejunum detected ob mRNA only in adipose tissue; Northern blots with an ob cDNA probe identified a 4.0 kb species in adipose tissue. The conservation of sequence and expression pattern of leptin in the pig reported here indicates that as in other species, this protein likely plays an important role in controlling food intake and fat deposition in the pig. 相似文献

Temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) is widespread in reptiles, yet its adaptive significance and mechanisms for its maintenance remain obscure and controversial. Comparative analyses identify an ancient origin of TSD in turtles, crocodiles and tuatara, suggesting that this trait should be advantageous in order to persist. Based on this assumption, researchers primarily, and with minimal success, have employed a model to examine sex-specific variation in hatchling phenotypes and fitness generated by different incubation conditions. The unwavering focus on different incubation conditions may be misplaced at least in the many turtle species in which hatchlings overwinter in the natal nest. If overwintering temperatures differentially affect fitness of male and female hatchlings, TSD might be maintained adaptively by enabling embryos to develop as the sex best suited to those overwintering conditions. We test this novel hypothesis using the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta), a species with TSD in which eggs hatch in late summer and hatchlings remain within nests until the following spring. We used a split-clutch design to expose field-incubated hatchlings to warm and cool overwintering (autumn–winter–spring) regimes in the laboratory and measured metabolic rates, energy use, body size and mortality of male and female hatchlings. While overall mortality rates were low, males exposed to warmer overwintering regimes had significantly higher metabolic rates and used more residual yolk than females, whereas the reverse occurred in the cool temperature regime. Hatchlings from mixed-sex nests exhibited similar sex-specific trends and, crucially, they were less energy efficient and grew less than same-sex hatchlings that originated from single-sex clutches. Such sex- and incubation-specific physiological adaptation to winter temperatures may enhance fitness and even extend the northern range of many species that overwinter terrestrially. 相似文献

Low temperature 31P and 15N NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate the species forming in the organic layer following the extraction of uranium from nitric acid solutions with di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid. It was found that uranium is extracted from neutral solutions as the 1:2 complex UO2A2 regardless of what anion is present. For dilute nitric acid solutions, the uranium is extracted both as associated and mixed nitrato species. Guazuma ulmifolia (Sterculiaceae) is a shrubby tree common in the Central American lowlands in deciduous forest, and in the pastures cut out of it. The tree flowers in April-May (end of dry season) and bears dormant, incompletely expanded fruit until the end of the rainy season (November-December), at which time the fruits rapidly expand and ripen to fall during the first half of the dry season. The fruits are avidly eaten by livestock. A horse may consume 300-2, 100 fruits in a meal, does not distinguish between fresh fruits that have been attacked by bruchid beetles and intact fruits, and defecates large numbers of viable seeds 2-5 days later. Moistened seeds germinate readily in horse dung or in soil. There are hard letter-shaped structures in the mesocarp of the fruit wall and a very hard core, both of which are large enough to function in preventing complete occlusion of the molar mill, an act which would crush the soft small seeds. Guazuma ulmifolia (guacimo) is probably one of the trees whose fruits would have been eaten and the seeds dispersed by the Pleistocene herbivorous megafauna that once roamed Central America. 相似文献
