Dyscalculia, dyslexia, and specific language impairment (SLI) are relatively specific developmental learning disabilities in math, reading, and oral language, respectively, that occur in the context of average intellectual capacity and adequate environmental opportunities. Past research has been dominated by studies focused on single impairments despite the widespread recognition that overlapping and comorbid deficits are common. The present study took an epidemiological approach to study the learning profiles of a large school age sample in language, reading, and math. Both general learning profiles reflecting good or poor performance across measures and specific learning profiles involving either weak language, weak reading, weak math, or weak math and reading were observed. These latter four profiles characterized 70% of children with some evidence of a learning disability. Low scores in phonological short-term memory characterized clusters with a language-based weakness whereas low or variable phonological awareness was associated with the reading (but not language-based) weaknesses. The low math only group did not show these phonological deficits. These findings may suggest different etiologies for language-based deficits in language, reading, and math, reading-related impairments in reading and math, and isolated math disabilities.  相似文献

This clinical study is a first attempt to use autofluorescence for recurrence diagnosis of skin cancer in postoperative scars. The proposed diagnostic parameter is based on a reduction in scar autofluorescence, evaluated in the green spectral channel. The validity of the method has been tested on 110 postoperative scars from 56 patients suspected of non‐melanoma skin cancer, with eight patients (13 scars) available for the repeated examination. The recurrence diagnosis within a scar has been made after two subsequent autofluorescence check‐ups, representing the temporal difference between the scar autofluorescence amplitudes as a vector. The recognition of recurrence has been discussed to represent the significant deviations from the value of vector angle θ. This new autofluorescence‐based method can be easily integrated into the postoperative monitoring of surgical scars and can help diagnose the recurrence of skin cancer from the early stage of scar development.  相似文献

We have isolated and sequenced cDNA clones of bovine and murine p11 mRNAs. The nonpolyadenylated mRNAs are predicted to be 614 and 600 nucleotides, respectively. The p11 mRNAs both contain a 291 nucleotide open reading frame, preceded by a 5'-untranslated region of 73 nucleotides in bovine p11 mRNA and of 68 nucleotides in murine p11 mRNA. The deduced bovine p11 amino acid sequence is identical to the previously published partial bovine and complete porcine p11 protein sequence except for an additional COOH-terminal lysine residue. The bovine and murine p11 proteins are 92% homologous, whereas at the nucleotide level the conservation is 89% in the coding region and 75% in the 3'-untranslated region. Southern analysis of murine genomic DNA detected a single p11 gene, less than 10 kilobase pairs in size, containing as many as three introns. The p11 gene has been assigned to mouse chromosome 3 by analysis of interspecific hybrid cell panels and recombinant inbred mouse strains. The p11 gene is closely linked to the Xmmv-65 endogenous leukemia virus env gene and the guanylate binding protein-1 gene. Northern analyses of RNAs from mouse tissues and cell lines indicated that p11 mRNA levels vary widely. They are very low in liver, heart, and testes, moderate in brain, spleen, and thymus, and high in kidney, intestine, and lung. Analysis of the same RNA samples for p36 mRNA levels showed that expression of p11 and p36 mRNAs is not always coordinated. Brain and the mouse embryonal carcinoma cell line F9 contain moderate to high levels of p11 mRNA with very low levels of p36 mRNA. Sequence homology between p11 and the S100 proteins, and the serum-induced 2A9 gene product, as well as possible functions of p11 are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Temporal mechanisms that influence the synchrony of gender expression and the patterns of withinplant pollen flow were examined in Amianthium muscatoxicum. In this species self-incompatible pollinations can clog stigmas, interfere with the growth of outcrossed pollen tubes, and reduce fecundity. The majority of flowers have partial dichogamy: a two-day period of pollen dehiscence and a four-day period of pollen viability are nested in a six-day period of pistil viability. An indeterminate flowering sequence among flowers on the same plant and partial dichogamy within flowers help reduce pollen flow within the whole plant. The combined effects at both of these levels should reduce pollen wastage and lower the incidence of stigma clogging by incompatible self pollen.  相似文献

Peripheral blood-derived human monocytes and the murine P388D1-monocytes-like cell line are induced to secrete IL-1 when stimulated with Fc region but not F(ab) region subfragments obtained from the cleavage of human IgG1 with papain or pepsin. The portion of the Fc region of IgG1 responsible for stimulation of IL-1 secretion appears to be located within the C gamma 3 domain of the molecule. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that the biologically active pepsin-derived pFc' subfragment is located within the C gamma 3 domain and the long-term papain digests containing predominately Fc' are also active. In contrast, short term papain digests containing mostly intact Fc fragments were found to be unable to induce IL-1 secretion.  相似文献

Summary In Manduca sexta larvae, sensory neurons innervating planta hairs on the tips of the prolegs make monosynaptic excitatory connections with motoneurons innervating proleg retractor muscles. Tactile stimulation of the hairs evokes reflex retraction of the proleg. In this study we examined activity-dependent changes in the amplitude of the excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) evoked in a proleg motoneuron by stimulation of individual planta hair sensory neurons. Deflection of a planta hair caused a phasic-tonic response in the sensory neuron, with a mean peak instantaneous firing frequency of >300 Hz, and a tonic firing rate of 10–20 Hz. Direct electrical stimulation was used to activate individual sensory neurons to fire at a range of frequencies including those observed during natural stimulation of the hair. At relatively low firing rates (e.g., 1 Hz), EPSP amplitude was stable indefinitely. At higher instantaneous firing frequencies (>10 Hz), EPSPs were initially facilitated, but continuous stimulation led rapidly to synaptic depression. High-frequency activation of a sensory neuron could also produce post-tetanic potentiation, in which EPSP amplitude remained elevated for several min following a stimulus train. Facilitation, depression, and post-tetanic potentiation all appeared to be presynaptic phenomena. We have used antibodies to the basement membrane proteoglycan to screen lambda gt11 expression vector libraries and have isolated two cDNA clones, termed BPG 5 and BPG 7, which encode different portions of the core protein of the heparan sulfate basement membrane proteoglycan. These clones hybridize to a single mRNA species of approximately 12 kilobases. Amino acid sequences obtained on peptides derived from protease digests of the core protein were found in the deduced sequence, confirming the identity of these clones. BPG 5 spanned 1986 base pairs and has an open reading frame of 662 amino acids. The amino acid sequence deduced from BPG 5 contains two cysteine-rich domains and two internally homologous domains lacking cysteine. The cysteine-rich domains show homology to the cysteine-rich domains of the laminin chains. A globule-rod structure, similar to that of the short arms of the laminin chains, is proposed for this region of the proteoglycan. The other clone, BPG 7, is 2193 base pairs long and has an open reading frame of 731 amino acids. The deduced sequence contains eight internal repeats with 2 cysteine residues in each repeat. These repeats show homology to the neural-cell adhesion molecule N-CAM and the plasma alpha 1B-glycoprotein. Looping structures similar to these proteins and to other proteins of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily are proposed for this region of the proteoglycan. The sequence DSGEY was found four times in this domain and could be heparan sulfate attachment sites.  相似文献

We examined the pulmonary vascular response to an intravenous leukotriene D4 (LTD4) injection of (1 microgram X kg-1 X min-1 for 2 min) immediately followed by infusion of 0.133 microgram X kg-1 X min-1 for 15 min in awake sheep prepared with lung lymph fistulas. LTD4 resulted in rapid generation of thromboxane A2 as measured by an increase in plasma thromboxane B2 concentration. The thromboxane B2 generation was associated with increases in pulmonary arterial and pulmonary arterial wedge pressures while left atrial pressure did not change significantly. Pulmonary lymph flow (Qlym) increased (P less than 0.05) transiently from base line 6.87 +/- 1.88 (SE) ml/h to maximum value of 9.77 +/- 1.27 at 15 min following the LTD4 infusion. The maximum increase in Qlym was associated with an increase in the estimated pulmonary capillary pressure. The increase in Qlym was not associated with a change in the lymph-to-plasma protein concentration (L/P) ratio. Thromboxane synthetase inhibition with dazoxiben (an imidazole derivative) prevented thromboxane B2 generation after LTD4 and also prevented the increases in pulmonary vascular pressures and Qlym. We conclude that LTD4 in awake sheep increases resistance of large pulmonary veins. The small transient increase in Qlym can be explained by the increase in pulmonary capillary pressure. Thromboxane appears to mediate both the pulmonary hemodynamic and lymph responses to LTD4 in sheep.  相似文献

We examined the effects of leukotrienes C4 (LTC4) and D4 (LTD4) (1 microgram) on the pulmonary vascular filtration coefficient, a measure of vessel wall conductivity to water, and the alterations in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in isolated-perfused guinea pig lungs. We also assessed whether LTC4 and LTD4 increased the permeability to albumin in cultured monolayers of pulmonary artery endothelial cells. In Ringer-perfused and blood-perfused lungs, LTC4 resulted in increases in pulmonary arterial pressure (Ppa) and the pulmonary capillary pressure (Pcap) measured as the equilibration pressure after simultaneous pulmonary arterial and venous occlusions. Pulmonary venous resistance (Rv) increased to a greater extent than arterial resistance (Ra) in both Ringer-perfused and blood-perused lungs challenged with LTC4. The greater increase in PVR in blood-perfused lungs corresponded with a greater elevation of lung effluent thromboxane B2 (TxB2) concentration. The LTC4-stimulated increase in PVR was prevented by pretreatment with meclofenamate (10(-4) M). LTD4 also induced rapid increases in Ppa and Pcap in both Ringer-perfused and blood-perfused lungs; however, Ppa decreased before stabilizing at a pressure higher than base line. The increases in Rv with LTD4 were greater than Ra. The LTD4-stimulated increases in Ra and Rv also paralleled the elevation in TxB2 concentration. As with LTC4, the increases in Ppa, Pcap, PVR, and TxB2 concentration were greater in blood-perfused than in Ringer-perfused lungs.
