The influence of climate change on the ecological impacts of invasive alien species (IAS) remains understudied, with deoxygenation of aquatic environments often-overlooked as a consequence of climate change. Here, we therefore assessed how oxygen saturation affects the ecological impact of a predatory invasive fish, the Ponto-Caspian round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), relative to a co-occurring endangered European native analogue, the bullhead (Cottus gobio) experiencing decline in the presence of the IAS. In individual trials and mesocosms, we assessed the effect of high, medium and low (90%, 60% and 30%) oxygen saturation on: (1) functional responses (FRs) of the IAS and native, i.e. per capita feeding rates; (2) the impact on prey populations exerted; and (3) how combined impacts of both fishes change over invasion stages (Pre-invasion, Arrival, Replacement, Proliferation). Both species showed Type II potentially destabilising FRs, but at low oxygen saturation, the invader had a significantly higher feeding rate than the native. Relative Impact Potential, combining fish per capita effects and population abundances, revealed that low oxygen saturation exacerbates the high relative impact of the invader. The Relative Total Impact Potential (RTIP), modelling both consumer species’ impacts on prey populations in a system, was consistently higher at low oxygen saturation and especially high during invader Proliferation. In the mesocosm experiment, low oxygen lowered RTIP where both species were present, but again the IAS retained high relative impact during Replacement and Proliferation stages at low oxygen. We also found evidence of multiple predator effects, principally antagonism. We highlight the threat posed to native communities by IAS alongside climate-related stressors, but note that solutions may be available to remedy hypoxia and potentially mitigate impacts across invasion stages.
Global losses of seagrasses and mangroves, eutrophication‐driven increases in ephemeral algae, and macrophyte invasions have impacted estuarine detrital resources. To understand the implications of these changes on benthic ecosystem processes, we tested the hypotheses that detrital source richness, mix identity, and biomass influence benthic primary production, metabolism, and nutrient fluxes. On an estuarine muddy sandflat, we manipulated the availability of eight detrital sources, including mangrove, seagrass, and invasive and native algal species that have undergone substantial changes in distribution. Mixes of these detrital sources were randomly assigned to one of 12 treatments and dried detrital material was added to seventy‐two 0.25 m2 plots (n =6 plots). The treatments included combinations of either two or four detrital sources and high (60 g) or low (40 g) levels of enrichments. After 2 months, the dark, light, and net uptake of NH4+, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, and the dark efflux of dissolved organic nitrogen were each significantly influenced by the identity of detrital mixes, rather than detrital source richness or biomass. However, gross and net primary productivity, average oxygen flux, and net NOX and dissolved inorganic phosphorous fluxes were significantly greater in treatments with low than with high detrital source richness. These results demonstrate that changes in detrital source richness and mix identity may be important drivers of estuarine ecosystem performance. Continued impacts to estuarine macrophytes may, therefore, further alter detritus‐fueled productivity and processes in estuaries. Specific tests that address predicted future changes to detrital resources are required to determine the consequences of this significant environmental problem. 相似文献
In this report, wedescribe the cloning, cellular localization, and functionalcharacteristics of Na+/H+ exchanger 1 (NHE1)from red blood cells of the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectesamericanus (paNHE1). The paNHE1 protein localizes primarily to themarginal band and exhibits a 74% similarity to the trout -NHE, and65% to the human NHE1 (hNHE1). Functionally, paNHE1 sharescharacteristics of both -NHE and hNHE1 in that it is activated bothby manipulations that increase cAMP and by cell shrinkage, respectively. In accordance, the paNHE1 protein exhibits both proteinkinase A consensus sites as in -NHE and a region of high homology tothat required for shrinkage-dependent activation of hNHE1. Aftershrinkage-dependent activation of paNHE1 and resulting activation of aCl/HCO exchanger, their paralleloperation results in net uptake of NaCl and osmotically obliged water.Activation of paNHE1 by cAMP is at least additive to that elicited byosmotic shrinkage, suggesting that these stimuli regulate paNHE1 bydistinct mechanisms. Finally, exposure to the serine/threoninephosphatase inhibitor calyculin A potently activates paNHE1, and thisactivation is also additive to that induced by shrinkage or cAMP. 相似文献
The histologic status of the sentinel lymph node is a highly significant prognostic factor for patients with clinically localized cutaneous melanoma. The patterns of initial treatment failure of patients with positive sentinel lymph node biopsy versus those with negative results have not been well described. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative prognostic importance of sentinel lymph node status and to compare patterns of initial treatment failure and prognosis of node-positive versus node-negative cutaneous melanoma patients staged by sentinel lymph node biopsy and selective lymphadenectomy. The authors reviewed the pertinent demographic and surgical data in a consecutive series of patients with cutaneous melanoma who underwent sentinel lymph node staging of nonpalpable regional nodes. Sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed using a combination of blue dye and radiolocalization. Patients with positive biopsy results underwent selective lymphadenectomy, whereas those with negative results were observed. Site(s) and date(s) of initial recurrence and death were determined, and disease-free and overall survival probabilities were compared between positive and negative groups using the log-rank test and multivariable Cox regression analysis. Between February of 1994 and August of 2000, 408 patients with melanoma underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy to stage 518 regional lymph node basins. Mean Breslow tumor thickness was 2.27 mm (range, 0.2 to 14.0 mm). Eighty-five patients (20.8 percent) had at least one histologically positive sentinel lymph node, and selective lymphadenectomy yielded additional positive lymph nodes in 18 of 84 patients (21.4 percent). Recurrences were noted in 70 patients (17 percent) at a median follow-up period of 31.4 months. Recurrences were more frequent in patients with positive biopsy results (36.5 percent) than in those with negative results (12.1 percent, p < 0.0001). Distant sites of initial recurrence were more likely in the positive group than in the negative group (71 percent versus 49 percent of recurrences, respectively; p = 0.06). The false-negative rate for sentinel lymph node staging was 4.5 percent and overall accuracy was 99 percent compared with clinical follow-up. Disease-free and overall survival correlated significantly with tumor thickness, ulceration, sentinel lymph node status, and the number of tumor-positive lymph nodes (two-sided p < 0.0001 for all comparisons). Multivariable analysis revealed that sentinel lymph node status (p = 0.003), tumor thickness (p = 0.016), ulceration (p = 0.006), and age (p = 0.003) were significant independent predictors of survival for the entire group. Tumor thickness and ulceration were significant predictors of recurrence and survival in sentinel node-negative patients but not in sentinel node-positive patients. Sentinel lymph node histology is possibly the most important negative predictor of early recurrence and survival in patients with American Joint Committee on Cancer stage I and II melanoma. The number of positive lymph nodes provides additional prognostic information. Although sentinel node-negative patients are a prognostically favorable group, various combinations of local and regional recurrences comprise the most common pattern of initial relapse after a negative sentinel lymph node biopsy result. 相似文献
The introduced amphipod crustaceans Gammarus pulex and G. tigrinus are displacing the native G. ducheni celticus in a number of freshwater sites in Northern Ireland. We investigated parasite and epibiont infection in populations in the Rivet Lagan and Lough Neagh where both native and invading species occur. Prevalence of the four parasites and epibionts observed was higher in the native G. d. celticus than in the invading amphipods at both field sites. In Lough Neagh. G. d. celticus individuals suffered higher burdens of the rotifer Embata parasitica and the protozoan Epistylis in comparison with the invading species. These patterns may reflect host specificity by the parasites or may result from different susceptibilities of the native and invading host species. We consider the influence of parasitism on host invasions and resulting species distributions. 相似文献
The state of being helpless is regarded as a central aspect of depression, and therefore the learned helplessness paradigm in rodents is commonly used as an animal model of depression. The term ‘learned helplessness’ refers to a deficit in escaping from an aversive situation after an animal is exposed to uncontrollable stress specifically, with a control/comparison group having been exposed to an equivalent amount of controllable stress. A key feature of learned helplessness is the transferability of helplessness to different situations, a phenomenon called ‘trans-situationality’. However, most studies in mice use learned helplessness protocols in which training and testing occur in the same environment and with the same type of stressor. Consequently, failures to escape may reflect conditioned fear of a particular environment, not a general change of the helpless state of an animal. For mice, there is no established learned helplessness protocol that includes the trans-situationality feature. Here we describe a simple and reliable learned helplessness protocol for mice, in which training and testing are carried out in different environments and with different types of stressors. We show that with our protocol approximately 50% of mice develop learned helplessness that is not attributable to fear conditioning. 相似文献
The ability to create lasting, trust-based friendships makes it possible for humans to form large and coherent groups. The recent literature on the evolution of sociality and on the network dynamics of human societies suggests that large human groups have a layered structure generated by emotionally supported social relationships. There are also gender differences in adult social style which may involve different trade-offs between the quantity and quality of friendships. Although many have suggested that females tend to focus on intimate relations with a few other females, while males build larger, more hierarchical coalitions, the existence of such gender differences is disputed and data from adults is scarce. Here, we present cross-cultural evidence for gender differences in the preference for close friendships. We use a sample of ∼112,000 profile pictures from nine world regions posted on a popular social networking site to show that, in self-selected displays of social relationships, women favour dyadic relations, whereas men favour larger, all-male cliques. These apparently different solutions to quality-quantity trade-offs suggest a universal and fundamental difference in the function of close friendships for the two sexes. 相似文献
