The body size of animals is affected by several factors, including ambient temperature and food availability. Ambient temperature is often negatively related to body size (Bergmann's rule) whereas an improved diet, especially during growth, has a positive effect. Animals commensal with man commonly exploit additional food sources (e.g. garbage dumps), thereby increasing their food supply. Using museum material, we studied morphological variation in skull size (and thus body size) among Spanish red foxes. Four measurements were taken of each skull and were related to the habitat from which the foxes were collected (agricultural and non-agricultural), and to latitude as a proxy for ambient temperature. The skull size of foxes collected in agricultural areas during the late 20th Century was significantly larger than that of those from non-agricultural areas, and was negatively related to latitude, thus contradicting Bergmann's rule. Four different mycotoxins (patulin, T-2 toxin, diacetoxyscirpenol and roquefortine) were used to study growth inhibitory effects on a melanin precursor overproducer mutant of the ciliateTetrahymena thermophilaThis strain is especially sensitive to diacetoxyscirpenol and T-2 toxin. The secretion capacity of melanin precursors into the culture medium by this mutant and its biosensor capacity are very useful characteristics to elaborate a rapid bioassay to detect some specific mycotoxins.  相似文献

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are remote‐controlled devices capable of collecting information from difficult‐to‐access places while minimizing disturbance. Although UAS are increasingly used in many research disciplines, their application to wildlife research remains to be explored in depth. Here, we report on the use of a small UAS to monitor temporal changes in breeding population size in a Black‐headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus colony. This method makes it possible to obtain georeferenced data on nest locations without causing colony disturbance, which would not otherwise be possible via direct ground observations.  相似文献

Photosynthetic down-regulation and/or inhibition under water stress conditions are determinants for plant growth, survival and yield in drought-prone areas. Current knowledge about the sequence of metabolic events that leads to complete inhibition of photosynthesis under severe water stress is reviewed. An analysis of published data reveals that a key regulatory role for Rubisco in photosynthesis is improbable under water stress conditions. By contrast, the little data available for other Calvin cycle enzymes suggest the possibility of a key regulatory role for some enzymes involved in the regeneration of RuBP. There are insufficient data to determine the role of photophosphorylation. Several important gaps in our knowledge of this field are highlighted. The most important is the remarkable scarcity of data about the regulation/inhibition of photosynthetic enzymes other than Rubisco under water stress. Consequently, new experiments are urgently needed to improve our current understanding of photosynthetic down-regulation under water stress. A second gap is the lack of knowledge of photosynthetic recovery after irrigation of plants which have been subjected to different stages of water stress. This knowledge is necessary in order to match physiological down-regulation by water stress with controlled irrigation programmes.  相似文献

A comparison of photosynthetic characteristics of 20 cultivars of grapevine ( Vitis vinifera L. ) from Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) and two widespread cultivars, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, was made under irrigation as well as in response to drought. Although these cultivars share a common origin, a high variability was found for several photosynthetic characters under irrigation. Interestingly, these variations were significant for gas-exchange parameters (net CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance and intrinsic water use efficiency) but not for chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (maximum photochemical efficiency, electron transport rate and non-photochemical quenching). Since water stress is the most limiting factor for plant production under the Mediterranean climate, it is presumable that these findings reflect specific selection pressures over physiological characteristics related to a balance between net carbon gain and water use. Some cultivars presented high carbon assimilation at the expense of a high water loss, whereas others were water savers, accompanied by low CO2 assimilation even under irrigation. Escursach was found to be an interesting cultivar, presenting low water consumption at the same time as reasonably high carbon assimilation. These cultivars also showed different responses to drought, which allowed their classification in two main groups: alarmist cultivars, which showed strong reductions of stomatal conductance in response to relatively low decreases of leaf water potential, and luxurious cultivars, showing low reductions of stomatal conductance under water stress.  相似文献

We review the photosynthetic responses to drought in field-growngrapevines and other species. As in other plant species, therelationship between photosynthesis and leaf water potentialand/or relative water content in field-grown grapevines dependson conditions during plant growth and measurements. However,when light-saturated stomatal conductance was used as the referenceparameter to reflect drought intensity, a common response patternwas observed that was much less dependent on the species andconditions. Many photosynthetic parameters (e.g. electron transportrate, carboxylation efficiency, intrinsic water-use efficiency,respiration rate in the light, etc.) were also more stronglycorrelated with stomatal conductance than with water statusitself. Moreover, steady-state chlorophyll fluorescence alsoshowed a high dependency on stomatal conductance. This is discussedin terms of an integrated down-regulation of the whole photosyntheticprocess by CO2 availability in the mesophyll. A study with sixMediterranean shrubs revealed that, in spite of some markedinterspecific differences, all followed the same pattern ofdependence of photosynthetic processes on stomatal conductance,and this pattern was quite similar to that of grapevines. Furtheranalysis of the available literature suggests that the above-mentionedpattern is general for C3 plants. Even though the patterns describeddo not necessarily imply a cause and effect relationship, theycan help our understanding of the apparent contradictions concerningstomatal vs. non-stomatal limitations to photosynthesis underdrought. The significance of these findings for the improvementof water-use efficiency of crops is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Capturing wild animals for research or conservation purposes may cause some adverse effects, which is only acceptable if these are outweighed by conservation benefits. We used information from 3 on-going telemetry studies on the endangered little bustard (Tetrax tetrax) in Western Europe to evaluate the risk factors associated with capture and handling. Of 151 telemetered birds, 23 (15.2%) exhibited impaired mobility and coordination after release, probably related to the occurrence of capture myopathy. Among the 23 impaired birds, 10 (43.5%) died before recovering normal mobility (6.6% of all birds captured). Logistic regression analyses identified longer handling time, longer restraint time, use of cannon nets, and capture of juveniles as inducing factors for these disorders. We conclude that little bustard is fairly susceptible to suffering ataxia and paresia after release as a result of restraint associated with capture and manipulation. Researchers can reduce this risk by keeping handling and restraint time below 10–20 minutes, particularly when using cannon nets or when capturing juveniles.  相似文献
