We show that variation in an intronic length polymorphism in the CHD1‐Z gene in Black‐tailed Godwits Limosa l. limosa is associated with fitness correlates. This is the second example of the CHDZ‐1 gene being correlated with fitness, a previous study having established that Moorhens Gallinula chloropus carrying the rare Z* allele have reduced survival. In Godwits, however, carriers of the Z* allele (374 bp) fared better than those with the more frequent Z allele (378 bp) with respect to body mass, plumage ornamentation, reproductive parameters and habitat quality. The Z* allele was found in 14% of 251 adult birds from nature reserves, but was absent from 33 birds breeding in intensively managed agricultural lands. Males and females with the Z* allele had less extensive breeding plumage, and females had a higher body mass, bred earlier and had larger eggs. There were no significant differences in annual survival between birds with and without the Z* allele. DNA isolated from museum skins demonstrated that this polymorphism was present at low frequency in 1929. We speculate that strong asymmetrical overdominance may explain the low frequency of the Z* allele and that genetic linkage to causal genes might be an explanation for the phenotypic correlations. 1. Predation‐exclusion experiments have highlighted that top‐down control is pervasive in terrestrial communities, but most of these experiments are simplistic in that they only excluded a single group of predators and the effect of removal was evaluated on a few species from the community. The main goal of our study was to experimentally establish the relative effects of ants and birds on the same arthropod assemblage of canopy trees. 2. We conducted 1‐year long manipulative experiments in an organic citrus grove intended to quantify the independent effects of bird and ant predators on the abundance of arthropods. Birds were excluded with plastic nets whereas ants were excluded with sticky barriers on the trunks. The sticky barrier also excluded other ground dwelling insects, like the European earwig Forficula auricularia L. 3. Both the exclusion of ants and birds affected the arthropod community of the citrus canopies, but the exclusion of ants was far more important than the exclusion of birds. Indeed, almost all groups of arthropods had higher abundance in ant‐excluded than in control trees, whereas only dermapterans were more abundant in bird‐excluded than in control trees. A more detailed analysis conducted on spiders also showed that the effect of ant exclusion was limited to a few families rather than being widespread over the entire diverse spectrum of spiders. 4. Our results suggest that the relative importance of vertebrate and invertebrate predators in regulating arthropod populations largely depends on the nature of the predator–prey system. 相似文献

The Maldanidae annelid worms are reviewed and the phylogenetic relationships of their subgroups provided, based on Hennigian principles and maximum parsimony. Characters were coded as binary and multistate (transformation series). We used 33 terminal taxa (species), and 50 characters. Characters were treated as unordered and of equal weight, and analysis was run in TNT. Three equally most-parsimonious trees were obtained with heuristic searches, with lengths of 64 steps; CI = 0.95, and RI = 0.98. The monophyly of Maldanidae was supported with 100% of bootstrap and jackknife values. As a result of our analysis, Arenicolidae remains the sister-group of Maldanidae, and both should be referred to Maldanomorpha. Maldanidae was supported by the following synapomorphies: dorsal prostomium; prostomium keel-shaped and fused to peristomium; torus globose behind median chaetigers; median chaetigers greatly elongated; number of pre-anal segments reduced. The subfamily Bogueinae was not monophyletic; Boguea and Boguella were included within Rhodininae. Clymenura, previously included in the Clymenurinae, was included within Euclymeninae. The taxa Notoproctinae, Maldaninae, Nicomachinae and Euclymeninae were grouped in the Maldanoplaca, a new taxon. Eight further new clades have been found, but were not named. 相似文献

The endosomal LeNHX2 ion transporter exchanges H+ with K+ and, to lesser extent, Na+. Here, we investigated the response to NaCl supply and K+ deprivation in transgenic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) overexpressing LeNHX2 and show that transformed tomato plants grew better in saline conditions than untransformed controls, whereas in the absence of K+ the opposite was found. Analysis of mineral composition showed a higher K+ content in roots, shoots and xylem sap of transgenic plants and no differences in Na+ content between transgenic and untransformed plants grown either in the presence or the absence of 120 mm NaCl. Transgenic plants showed higher Na+/H+ and, above all, K+/H+ transport activity in root intracellular membrane vesicles. Under K+ limiting conditions, transgenic plants enhanced root expression of the high‐affinity K+ uptake system HAK5 compared to untransformed controls. Furthermore, tomato overexpressing LeNHX2 showed twofold higher K+ depletion rates and half cytosolic K+ activity than untransformed controls. Under NaCl stress, transgenic plants showed higher uptake velocity for K+ and lower cytosolic K+ activity than untransformed plants. These results indicate the fundamental role of K+ homeostasis in the better performance of LeNHX2 overexpressing tomato under NaCl stress. 相似文献

Data are presented on patterns of failure and delay in making initial treatment
contact after first onset of a mental disorder in 15 countries in the World
Health Organization (WHO)''s World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys. Representative
face-to-face household surveys were conducted among 76,012 respondents aged
18 and older in Belgium, Colombia, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan,
Lebanon, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, People''s Republic
of China (Beijing and Shanghai), Spain, and the United States. The WHO Composite
International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was used to assess lifetime DSM-IV
anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders. Ages of onset for individual disorders
and ages of first treatment contact for each disorder were used to calculate
the extent of failure and delay in initial help seeking. The proportion of
lifetime cases making treatment contact in the year of disorder onset ranged
from 0.8 to 36.4% for anxiety disorders, from 6.0 to 52.1% for mood disorders,
and from 0.9 to 18.6% for substance use disorders. By 50 years, the proportion
of lifetime cases making treatment contact ranged from 15.2 to 95.0% for anxiety
disorders, from 7.9 to 98.6% for mood disorders, and from 19.8 to 86.1% for
substance use disorders. Median delays among cases eventually making contact
ranged from 3.0 to 30.0 years for anxiety disorders, from 1.0 to 14.0 years
for mood disorders, and from 6.0 to 18.0 years for substance use disorders.
Failure and delays in treatment seeking were generally greater in developing
countries, older cohorts, men, and cases with earlier ages of onset. These
results show that failure and delays in initial help seeking are pervasive
problems worldwide. Interventions to ensure prompt initial treatment contacts
are needed to reduce the global burdens and hazards of untreated mental disorders. 相似文献

Use of PCR for detection of subpatent infections of lizard malaria: implications for epizootiology 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The estimated prevalence of a malaria parasite, Plasmodium mexicanum , of western fence lizards, Sceloporus occidentalis , was compared using two techniques: microscopic examination of blood smears, and nested PCR amplification of the 18S small subunit rRNA gene. Two sites in northern California, USA were investigated, one with known long-term high prevalence of the parasite (30% by blood smear scanning), and one with low prevalence (6%). The nested PCR readily detected very low-level infections (< 1 parasite per 10 000 erythrocytes); such infections are often subpatent by normal microscopic examination. False negatives (scored as not infected after scanning the blood smear, but found infected via PCR) were rare at both sites (4% at the high-prevalence site, 6% at the low-prevalence site). However, a greater proportion of infections was detected only by PCR at the low-prevalence site (50% vs. 9%). If 50% of the infections sustain very weak parasitaemia where lizards are rarely infected, this would accord with hypotheses that predict that parasites should reduce infection growth when transmission is uncommon. The study demonstrates that PCR is a powerful tool to detect very low-level malarial infections in vertebrate hosts, including those with nucleated erythrocytes. 相似文献

The continuous replacement of teeth throughout their lifetime is a common characteristic of most chondrichthyans. This process was already present in the earliest representatives of the group. It has been well established that different species of extant sharks show rapid tooth replacement rates; however, some authors have suggested that in early chondrichthyans this rate might have been much slower. Here we present a qualitative approach to analyse tooth replacement rates in the Early Devonian shark Leonodus carlsi , the earliest tooth-bearing shark known to date. For this, we have examined 1,103 isolated teeth from Celtiberia, Spain. Our study provides strong evidences of an extremely slow dental replacement in this primitive chondrichthyan based on three independents analyses: (1) statistical analysis of the wear degree, demonstrating that teeth remain functional for a long period of time; (2) analysis of both the histological and the morphological features of the teeth cusps suggests that this chondrichthyan used a maturation process that optimizes its function, thus worn teeth show an efficient working shape that implies their teeth remained functional for a long time after being modelled by use; and (3) estimations of size increments between teeth (Δs) of the same dental family for some recent sharks whose rates of replacement were known prove that Δs is inversely proportional to the rate of replacement ( R 2 = 0.8327). The estimated values of tooth replacement rates obtained from Δs for L. carlsi and for some Late Devonian cladoselachian sharks are significatively slower than those observed in current sharks. 相似文献
