Abstract. Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes which had fed upon mice infected with Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis malaria parasites produced significantly fewer eggs than mosquitoes fed on an uninfected mouse. Fecundity reduction was more pronounced when the bloodmeal contained malaria gametocytes and the mosquitoes developed oocysts. Egg production and haematin excretion were correlated for uninfected bloodfed mosquitoes; the presence of P.y. nigeriensis in the blood affected this relationship. Reduced fecundity was associated with a significant reduction of bloodmeal size (measured by haematin excretion) in mosquitoes which ingested gametocytaemic blood. The bloodmeal size in mosquitoes fed on parasitaemic blood without gametocytes was not significantly reduced. The use of haematin assays for determination of bloodmeal size in mosquitoes is discussed.  相似文献

Based on protochordates and extant fish, the earliest Palaeozoic vertebrates were microphagous suspension-feeding animals that pumped food-carrying water very slowly and thus required highly concentrated suspensions. Such conditions exist in benthic (not open water) aquatic environments. Feeding modes which on the basis of extant fish are closely related to benthic microphagous suspension feeding include deposit feeding, epilithic algal scraping, and macrophagous suspension feeding; early jawless vertebrates are predicted to have included all these feeding types. The gnathostome condition is predicted to have followed an initial switch from feeding on suspensions to taking tiny individual food particles (microphagous suspension-feeding → microphagous particulate-feeding → macrophagous particulate-feeding).  相似文献

Across a time course of flooding the malic acid content in rootsof the swamp tree Nyssa sylvatica var. biflora increased 5-foldfrom 1 week to 1 month of flooding and remained at that levelthrough a full year of flooding. Alcoholic fermentation ratesaccelerated within the first month of flooding but dropped tovery low levels under long-term flooding. The theory that, underflooding, malic acid accumulates as an alternative anaerobicend product to ethanol is unlikely in this instance since (1)malate is initially associated with high alcoholic fermentationand (2) the reduction in alcoholic fermentation is accountedfor by increased internal aeration of the roots.  相似文献

This publication reports on the chemical and phytoplankton aspects of a three month biological survey of Nyumba ya Mungu reservoir, Tanzania.
The lake had a total salt concentration of about 8 meq dm-3 and specific conductivity of 900 μS cm-1. The main salt in solution was sodium bicarbonate, and when the lake level fell it sometimes formed a crust on the exposed shore. The concentrations of major nutrient ions were probably not limiting to algal growth and good nutrient replenishment was provided by the two inflow rivers.
Nyumba ya Mungu supports a rich phytoplanton dominated by Melosira and blue-green algae. Acetone extractions gave chlorophyll 'a' concentrations ranging from 20–40 mgm-3 in the vertical profiles, and light and dark bottle experiments indicated a maximum gross photosynthesis of about 800 mg O2 m-3h-1. There was evidence of chemical stratification in the open water and diurnal stratification in the sheltered bays, but discontinuities were short-lived and the Trade Winds ensured regular mixing of the water. The lake appeared to have a higher primary production than the larger Rift Valley lakes and it was considered that this level of production would continue.  相似文献

A population of approximately 100 banded mongooses living in six packs was studied for over 2 years in Rwenzori National Park, Uganda. The packs were relatively stable, cohesive social units composed of approximately equal numbers of males and females and varied in size from six to thirty-five adults and subadults. Breeding was synchronized within the packs with several females producing their litters at approximately the same time. The packs bred up to four times per year. Mortality of animals over 6 months old was approximately 10% annually. Less than 50% of juveniles survived to the age of 3 months. The banded mongoose feeds primarily on invertebrates, particularly millipedes and beetles. Ants, crickets, termites and earwigs are also important elements of the diet. Vertebrate remains were found in 12% of the droppings analysed. Although the pack forages as a unit each individual finds its own food. The mean home range size of five of the packs was 80-4 ha; the two largest packs had ranges exceeding 1 km2. The banded mongoose is strictly diurnal typically leaving a den in the hour following sunrise and returning a few minutes before sunset with a prolonged rest during the heat of the day. Dens were in termite mounds (usually in thicket clumps), erosion gullies, aardvark holes and occasionally in man-made structures. Most were used for only a few days and then abandoned but a few preferred dens were occupied for periods up to 54 days and re-used repeatedly. Interactions between packs were aggressive and appeared to function in spacing the packs. The result of an encounter depended upon pack size with larger packs dominating smaller ones; the area of occurrence did not appear to affect the outcome. Mating between packs was observed during aggressive encounters. Group life is of adaptive significance in protecting the individual from predators and in care of the young. The pack bunches around young mongooses when disturbed and also bunches to attack certain predators and competitors. One or more adults remain at the den to guard the young when the pack forages.  相似文献

Acclimation is a common phenotypic response to environmentalchange. Acclimation is often thought to enhance performanceand thus to be adaptive. This view has recently been formalizedas the "Beneficial Acclimation Hypothesis" and predicts thatindividuals acclimated to one environment perform better inthat environment than do individuals acclimated to a differentenvironment. Although Beneficial Acclimation is appealing andwidely supported, recent studies with E. coli and Drosophilahave challenged its general validity. Although these challengescould be dismissed as mere exceptions, they encourage a re-evaluationof the adaptive significance of acclimation. Our philosophicalapproach differs from that of most previous studies of acclimation,in which the prediction derived from a Beneficial Acclimationperspective (e.g., heat tolerance is positively correlated withacclimation temperature) is tested against the null hypothesis("single hypothesis approach"). Instead, we follow Huey andBerrigan (1996) in advocating a strong inference approach (sensuPlatt, 1964), which recognizes that Beneficial Acclimation isactually one of a set of competing hypotheses that make differentpredictions as to how developmental temperature influences thethermal sensitivity of adults ("developmental acclimation").Using this perspective, Huey and Berrigan proposed a factorialexperimental design (3 developmental by 3 adult temperatures)designed to discriminate among all competing hypotheses. Wenow derive a formal statistical model (ANOVA with orthogonalpolynomial contrasts) for this experimental design and use itto evaluate simultaneously the relative impact of each competinghypothesis. We then apply this model to several case studies(Drosophila, Volvox, Trichogramma), and we review also a recentstudy with E. coli. The influence of Beneficial Acclimationis supported (albeit often weakly) in most cases. Nevertheless,other hypotheses (especially the Optimal Developmental TemperatureHypothesis) often have a greater impact. Even so, however, BeneficialAcclimation usually predicts relative performance at extremetest temperatures. We conclude that, although rumors of itsdeath are premature, Beneficial Acclimation cannot be viewedas the dominant expectation, at least with regard to developmentaltemperature acclimation. Moreover, our findings reinforce theview that a strong inference approach provides a more comprehensiveportrait of complex biological responses than do single-hypothesisapproaches.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Most ants are more like plants and marine invertebrates than other insects because the adults are sessile and the immature stages are motile. 2. This paper reported the results from a field experiment that increased food levels on the fungus gardening ant, Trachymyrmex septentrionalis, which has served as a model system for understanding the complexities of these obligate mutualisms. 3. Food supplementation increased the growth of the symbiotic fungus and this led to an increase in the amount of fungal biomass. The amount of fungal biomass was generally more important in determining the amount of ant offspring than colony size. 4. The results indicate that the population is food limited and colonies may compete for relatively rare fungal substrate. However, competition in this species is not obvious.  相似文献

Photosynthetic leaf traits were determined for savanna and forest ecosystems in West Africa, spanning a large range in precipitation. Standardized major axis fits revealed important differences between our data and reported global relationships. Especially for sites in the drier areas, plants showed higher photosynthetic rates for a given N or P when compared with relationships from the global data set. The best multiple regression for the pooled data set estimated Vcmax and Jmax from NDW and S. However, the best regression for different vegetation types varied, suggesting that the scaling of photosynthesis with leaf traits changed with vegetation types. A new model is presented representing independent constraints by N and P on photosynthesis, which can be evaluated with or without interactions with S. It assumes that limitation of photosynthesis will result from the least abundant nutrient, thereby being less sensitive to the allocation of the non‐limiting nutrient to non‐photosynthetic pools. The model predicts an optimum proportionality for N and P, which is distinct for Vcmax and Jmax and inversely proportional to S. Initial tests showed the model to predict Vcmax and Jmax successfully for other tropical forests characterized by a range of different foliar N and P concentrations.  相似文献

The morphology of the larval ventromental plates of Y. tahitiensis Sublette & Martin and four Oceanian species of Chironomus Meigen, C. hawaiiensis Grimshaw, C. javanus Kieffer, C. magnivalva Kieffer and C. samoensis Edwards, has been studied by scanning electron micrography. Data on ventromental plate ultrastructure are used in phenetic and cladistic analyses of the relationships of T. tahitiensis and the Oceanian Chironomus to other species in Chironomus and additional genera. The results of these analyses support the current generic status of T. tahitiensis but indicate that Yama is less closely related to Chironomus than previously supposed, a finding that is supported by a reexamination of ‘traditional’ morphological features.  相似文献
