Two new genera, Fulvoscirtes n.gen. and Acanthoscirtes n.gen. , are established within the subtribe Karniellina of Conocephalini. Fulvoscirtes is based on Xiphidion kilimandjaricum Sjöstedt, 1909 and Acanthoscirtes on Phlesirtes kevani Chopard from northern Kenya. The majority of Fulvoscirtes spp. are confined to open grasslands in the submontane zone of mountains. Fulvoscirtes contains eight species, seven of which are newly described in this paper. Three species and one subspecies occur on Mt Kilimanjaro. These are F. kilimandjaricum (Sjöstedt) constricted to the southern slopes, F. legumishera n.sp. confined to the northern side and F. sylvaticus n.sp. occurring on the western side of Kilimanjaro and on the eastern slopes of Mt Meru. Fulvoscirtes fulvus n.sp. is divided into two subspecies, F. fulvus fulvus n.ssp. found in the submontane zone of east Kilimanjaro and F. fulvus parensis n.ssp. in submontane to montane localities of the North and South Pare mountains. Fulvoscirtes fulvotaitensis n.sp. occurs in the Taita Hills of southern Kenya. Fulvoscirtes viridis n.sp. is described from savannah habitats between Mts Longido and Meru. Fulvoscirtes laticercus n.sp. is found in the Kenyan highlands, while the most southerly occurring species, Fulvoscirtes manyara n.sp. , is found on Mt Hanang and the Mbulu highlands of northwestern Tanzania. Acanthoscirtes contains three species, of which A. albostriatus n.sp. is described newly from savannah habitas of eastern Kilimanjaro. Information is given on the ecology and the acoustic behaviour of some of the species together with keys to the genera of the Karniellina and the species of Fulvoscirtes and Acanthoscirtes. The genera of Karniellina probably evolved at a time when grasslands spread in East Africa due to an increasing aridification of the climate. The earliest lineage, the genus Karniella, is adapted to more forested habitats while the majority of the genera of Karniellina prefer open grasslands. Major splits within Karniellina probably occurred with the emergence of savannah grasslands due to the ongoing fragmentation of forest habitats several millions years ago, but most species within the genera are geologically young, their radiation being boosted by climatic fluctuations of the past 1–2 Ma.  相似文献

1. This study examined the abundance and distribution of freshwater sponges (Spongillidae) at 32 sites in a floodplain on the Danube within the ‘Donau‐Auen’ National Park east of Vienna, Austria. Ranked from abundant to rare, the species inventory comprised Ephydatia fluviatilis, Spongilla lacustris, Ephydatia mülleri, Eunapius fragilis and Trochospongilla horrida. 2. The presence of hard substratum was essential for the growth of sponges. Timber stands near the water and drifting dead wood increased the abundance of E. fragilis, E. fluviatilis and E. mülleri, whereas stony substrata were important for S. lacustris. A small fraction of E. fluviatilis was collected from macrophytes (Phragmites). 3. Based on the area colonised, the abundance of S. lacustris, E. fragilis and E. fluviatilis was highest (94.2–100% of the total) in floodplain waters where hydrological connectivity with the Danube was low (0–6 days year−1), whereas E. mülleri and T. horrida made up 20.3–35.9% of the total at sites connected for up to 179 days year−1. Moreover, the area colonised by T. horrida at a current velocity >0.20 m s−1 was larger than in the remaining species. Sites with E. mülleri and T. horrida had a higher silicon concentration (0.9 mg L−1) than sites where the remaining three species were collected (0.4–0.6 mg L−1). 4. In most species, the length of macroscleres (the larger spicules) was positively correlated with conductivity and negatively with pH. With respect to aberrant macroscleres, hooks were observed most frequently, whereas the proportion of centrotylotes (ie with the one on more globular swellings along the spicule) was lowest. 5. Freshwater sponges have a great deal of potential as bioindicators and restoration measures that improve floodplain connectivity will favour rare species, such as E. mülleri and T. horrida, while impairing others (e.g. E. fragilis, S. lacustris and E. fluviatilis).  相似文献

Melanoscirtes gen.n. is established within Karniellina. The members of this subtribe are small conocephaline bush crickets, confined to Africa. Melanoscirtes is erected on Phlesirtes kibonotensis, a species restricted to forest clearings and forest edge in the submontane and montane zones of Mt. Kilimanjaro. A subspecies, M. kibonotensis uguenoensis, is described from the North Pare mountains, a mountain range of the Eastern Arc adjacent to Mt. Kilimanjaro. Further species of Melanoscirtes occur on other mountain ranges of the northern branch of the Eastern Arc mountains of northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. The South Pare mountains harbour M. shengenae; the West Usambaras, M. usambarensis, and the Taita Hills, M. taitensis. All species and subspecies of Melanoscirtes exhibit a similar morphology and occupy analogous habitats on the respective mountains. The song patterns for all species found within this genus are very similar, and this, together with evidence from molecular data, suggests that allopatric speciation is the reason for the biogeographic pattern found in this genus. The genetic variation within spore banks of Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth from three sites in north-eastern Switzerland was investigated. At two sites spore banks were located beneath sporophyte populations. One collection site was 10Om away from a sporophyte population. The gametophytes grown from the soil samples, the dimensions of which were 4 × 4 × 1.5 cm, and sporophytes from each site were analysed electrophoretically for either three or four variable allozyme loci. The spore banks from the different soil samples within and between populations revealed a considerable amount of genetic diversity. The most frequent alleles within the two sporophyte populations were, with a few exceptions, also the most frequent within the spore banks. The influence of single sporophytic individuals on the genetic composition of microsites seems to be considerably reduced by stochastic processes such as soil movement or the action of earthworms, which promote the mixing of spores from different spatial and temporal origins. It was shown that spores remain viable after passing through the gut of earthworms and that spore banks from even small soil samples revealed genetic diversity and could lead to a large number of genetically distinct sporophytes. The results suggest that fertilization seems to be close to random because the sporophyte populations sampled were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and had fixation index ( F is) close to zero.  相似文献

Most arthropod burrows show a marked preferred orientation: they are not random in alignment. A recent burrow made by Jaxea nocturna Nardo is compared to three fossil burrows from the Austrian Tertiary. In each system very steep and very flat burrow sections can be distinguished. In three cases, including the Recent one, flat burrow sections dominate in length. In all burrow sections the distribution of trend angles is also not uniform but indicate preferred directions. In those cases where two mean vectors exist their position is nearly orthogonal, in systems with three mean vectors they form angles of nearly 60°. A relationship between these preferred directions to coastline orientation and current direction is likely.  相似文献

Combined effects of co-occurring global climate changes on ecosystem responses are generally poorly understood. Here, we present results from a 2-year field experiment in a Carex fen ecosystem on the southernmost tip of South America, where we examined the effects of solar ultraviolet B (UVB, 280–315 nm) and warming on above- and belowground plant production, C : N ratios, decomposition rates and earthworm population sizes. Solar UVB radiation was manipulated using transparent plastic filter films to create a near-ambient (90% of ambient UVB) or a reduced solar UVB treatment (15% of ambient UVB). The warming treatment was imposed passively by wrapping the same filter material around the plots resulting in a mean air and soil temperature increase of about 1.2 °C. Aboveground plant production was not affected by warming, and marginally reduced at near-ambient UVB only in the second season. Aboveground plant biomass also tended to have a lower C : N ratio under near-ambient UVB and was differently affected at the two temperatures (marginal UVB × temperature interaction). Leaf decomposition of one dominant sedge species ( Carex curta ) tended to be faster at near-ambient UVB than at reduced UVB. Leaf decomposition of a codominant species ( Carex decidua ) was significantly faster at near-ambient UVB; root decomposition of this species tended to be lower at increased temperature and interacted with UVB. We found, for the first time in a field experiment that epigeic earthworm density and biomass was 36% decreased by warming but remained unaffected by UVB radiation. Our results show that present-day solar UVB radiation and modest warming can adversely affect ecosystem functioning and engineers of this fen. However, results on plant biomass production also showed that treatment manipulations of co-occurring global change factors can be overridden by the local climatic situation in a given study year.  相似文献

Ten Crepis species from Bulgaria—five perennials (C. viscidula, C. paludosa, C. coryzaefolia, C. bilhynica, C. schochtii) four annuals (C. pulchra, C. sancta, C. setosa, C. zacintha) and one biennial (C. biennis)—were analysed karyologically using haematoxyh staining, Feulgen cytophotometry (scanning densitometry and video-based image analysis), and DNA flow cytometry with propidium iodide. All taxa but the biennial are diploids with descending basic chromosome numbers, x=6, 5, 4, 3. Significant positive correlations were found between nuclear DNA content and karyotype length and nuclear DNA content and karyotypic asymmetry. Together with the results of previous authors our data suggest that evolutionary advancement could be correlated with more symmetrical karyotypes. Negative significant correlations were established between presumably advanced growth habit (from rhizomatous and tap-rooted perennials towards highly specialized annuals) and chromosome number and karyotype length. Nuclear DNA 1C-values on average were higher in perennials than in annuals, but the ranges were overlapping and the differences not significant. Crepis biennis (2n=c. 40, presumably 10x) had the highest DNA quantity, but calculated at its x-level ranked relatively low in the species sample.  相似文献

In Middle Triassic (Ladinian) basin areas immediately adjacent to reefs, Nodosaria striatoeclavata Spandel exhibits during the early Ladinian a morphological transformation in the direction of the simultaneously occurring Nodosaria liratella Tappan. Statistical confirmation of this trend is provided by such parameters as growth in test breadth and degree of bulging of the penultimate chamber. The ribbing, too, shows a directed change. There are three possible explanations for this morphological manifestation of a fusion of two species from a population genetic viewpoint: (1) Phyletic evolution of Nodosaria striatoclavata with 'convergence' towards Nodosaria liratella . (2) Recurrent appearance of species which evolved rapidly from a single line of origin ('punctuated equilibrium'). (3) Fusion of species through successive introgression of genes after the collapse of isolation.  相似文献
