The Cam River mouth (Haiphong Province) is one of the main river mouths of the Red River System, which is one of the most important water resources in Northern Vietnam. Over the past 50 years, the strong socio-economic development in the area has caused a considerable contamination with heavy metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and arsenic. In this study, the vertical and horizontal distributions of heavy metals and arsenic in sediments from the Cam River mouth were investigated. In addition, the history, origin, and degree of contamination were assessed. Normalized (with respect to Al) heavy metal and arsenic concentrations in sediment cores and absolute dates obtained from the 137Cs analysis were used to reconstruct the pollution history of the river mouth. As, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations increase rapidly by approximately two times or more from 1954 to 1975, and then remain nearly unchanged from 1975 until 2008, whereas Co, Cr, and Ni concentrations slightly increase from 1954 until 2008. In addition, background values for heavy metals and arsenic have also been determined with regard to the period before 1954. In the study area, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn are evaluated as minorly enriched, whereas As and Pb are classified as moderately enriched. Generally, the anthropogenic activities in the Haiphong harbor and industrial zone locally contribute to the contamination by heavy metals and arsenic in the Cam River mouth.  相似文献

Fall incidents occur frequently in the community dwelling elderly and even more in the institutionalised elderly. Fall-related research data indicate positive effects of a multifactorial intervention targeted on prevention of falls and fall-related injuries. In November 2004 the guideline "Prevention of fall incidents in the elderly" developed by The Dutch Institute for Healthcare Improvement (CBO) was published. This guideline pays attention to the risk factors for falling and the prevention of fall incidents in all settings. The highlights for nursing homes are: all nursing home patients are at risk; perform a fall risk assessment to direct fall preventive activities; together with specific fall prevention for the patient general fall prevention for the institute has to be undertaken; a multifactorial approach is indicated. In nursing homes it is possible to perform such approach multidisciplinary.  相似文献

This work presents a joint spatial modeling framework to improve estimation of the spatial distribution of the latent COVID-19 incidence in Belgium, based on test-confirmed COVID-19 cases and crowd-sourced symptoms data as reported in a large-scale online survey. Correction is envisioned for stochastic dependence between the survey's response rate and spatial COVID-19 incidence, commonly known as preferential sampling, but not found significant. Results show that an online survey can provide valuable auxiliary data to optimize spatial COVID-19 incidence estimation based on confirmed cases in situations with limited testing capacity. Furthermore, it is shown that an online survey on COVID-19 symptoms with a sufficiently large sample size per spatial entity is capable of pinpointing the same locations that appear as test-confirmed clusters, approximately 1 week earlier. We conclude that a large-scale online study provides an inexpensive and flexible method to collect timely information of an epidemic during its early phase, which can be used by policy makers in an early phase of an epidemic and in conjunction with other monitoring systems.  相似文献

The Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic has increased mortality in countries worldwide. To evaluate the impact of the pandemic on mortality, the use of excess mortality rather than reported COVID-19 deaths has been suggested. Excess mortality, however, requires estimation of mortality under nonpandemic conditions. Although many methods exist to forecast mortality, they are either complex to apply, require many sources of information, ignore serial correlation, and/or are influenced by historical excess mortality. We propose a linear mixed model that is easy to apply, requires only historical mortality data, allows for serial correlation, and down-weighs the influence of historical excess mortality. Appropriateness of the linear mixed model is evaluated with fit statistics and forecasting accuracy measures for Belgium and the Netherlands. Unlike the commonly used 5-year weekly average, the linear mixed model is forecasting the year-specific mortality, and as a result improves the estimation of excess mortality for Belgium and the Netherlands.  相似文献

Isokinetic exercises at different angular velocities on Cybex devices are often used for assessment and therapy in chronic low back pain patients. Little is known about the effect of velocity of movement on the muscle activity during these exercises. The purpose of this study was to investigate both relative muscle activity and ratios of local to global muscle activity at the different velocities of isokinetic movements on a Cybex dynamometer. Fifty-three healthy employees of Belgian Defence (26 male and 27 female) aged between 20 and 57 years old voluntarily performed isometric and isokinetic exercises at four different velocities. Surface electromyographic signals of different abdominal and back muscles were recorded on both sides. Both the relative muscle activity and the local to global muscle activity ratio of the back muscles were affected by changes in velocities of isokinetic exercises. The global muscle system was more influenced by changes in velocity, than the local muscle system. Abdominal relative muscle activity and ratios were not influenced by velocity of movement. This study revealed that the velocity of isokinetic extension exercises influences the recruitment of the back muscles, meaning that protocols of training programs should be adapted in function of the focus of the therapy.  相似文献

Given the global decline of many invertebrate food resources, it is fundamental to understand the dietary requirements of insectivores. We give new insights into the functional relationship between the spatial habitat use, food availability, and diet of a crepuscular aerial insectivore, the European Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) by relating spatial use data with high‐throughput sequencing (HTS) combined with DNA metabarcoding. Our study supports the predictions that nightjars collect a substantial part of their daily nourishment from foraging locations, sometimes at considerable distance from nesting sites. Lepidopterans comprise 65% of nightjars'' food source. Nightjars tend to select larger species of Lepidoptera (>19 mm) which suggests that nightjars optimize the efficiency of foraging trips by selecting the most energetically favorable—larger—prey items. We anticipate that our findings may shed additional light on the interactions between invertebrate communities and higher trophic levels, which is required to understand the repercussions of changing food resources on individual‐ and population‐level processes.  相似文献
