Abstract Bruchidius atrolineatus (Pic) is a common pest infesting cowpea seeds ( Vigna unguiculata Walp) in Africa. In the Sahelian zone, the adults are in reproductive diapause during the dry season. Diapause induction depends on the climatic conditions during embryonic and post-embryonic development. A strain of B. atrolineatus originating from the Niamey (13o N) was reared in different thermoperiodic and photoperiodic conditions. In the thermoperiodic regime 40:25o C, in continuous darkness, induction of diapause was dependent on the duration of the thermophase. Photoperiod could also influence diapause induction but the response depended on the temperature. When the beetles were reared in conditions of LD 12:12 h, 40:25o C, for seven generations, the proportion of diapausing adults decreased and their sensitivity to photoperiod increased. In LD 14:10 h, 40:25C C, the proportion of diapausing adults remained high regardless of the photoperiod. In these conditions, the first emerging adults were sexually active and were used for selection of a strain with a low incidence of diapause. After twelve generations, the proportion of diapausing beetles was lower than 5%. The responses of this selected strain to photo- and thermoperiods were reduced. The sensitivity of B. atrolineatus to photoperiod and thermoperiod could be controlled by genetic systems as observed in other insect species. 相似文献

Nutrient translocation in chestnut tree stemwood was calculatedfrom the distribution of nutrient content throughout the tissuelife-span. The dynamics of internal translocation were followedduring the crop rotation by means of an age series of five coppicedstands (219 years). N, P, K, Ca and Mg contents in treerings were estimated from the concentrations along a verticaland radial gradient and from the ring volume obtained usingstem ring analysis.Real nutrient translocation was calculatedstepwise between successive stages in the age series;apparenttranslocation was computed on a complete tree rotation by comparingthe initial content just after the ring was formed with themineral content in the oldest stand. There was a marked translocationof N, P, K and Ca when the rings were physiologically-activetissues. Real translocation of N, P and K (but not Ca) increasedwith stand age, obviously in parallel with the enlarged stemwoodbiomass reaching 23.2 and 20.6 kg ha-1for K and N in the lastyears of rotation, nearly 5 kg ha-1for Mg and about 3 kg ha-1forCa and P. Potassium was the most mobile element since translocationreached 60% of the total amount immobilized in the stemwoodat the end of the rotation, whereas values for N, P and Mg wereapproximately 25% and 10% for calcium. Total apparent translocationreached respectively 39.2 and 32.4 kg ha-1for K, N, approximately12 and 7 kg ha-1for Mg and Ca and only 4.4 kg ha-1for P. Totalapparent translocation as a percentage of total wood immobilizationwas 114% for K, 83% for Mg, 63% for P, but only 39% for N and24% for calcium. Abstract.
- 1 Choice experiments on interspecific host discrimination in A.lopezi and A. diversicornis were carried out on discs of cassava leaf containing four hosts (P.manihoti) that had been parasitized by the other species and four unparasitized hosts.
- 2 A.lopezi accepted both host types equally for oviposition, whereas A.diversicornis accepted fewer hosts that had been parasitized by A.lopezi than unparasitized ones. A.diversicornis is therefore capable of interspecific host discrimination, but such a capability was not demonstrated for A.lopezi.
- 3 Survival probability in singly parasitized hosts was 0.85 for both parasitoid species. When the time interval between ovipositions was 2 h or less, survival in multiparasitized hosts was 0.68 for A.lopezi and 0.17 for A.diversicornis, irrespective of priority. Increasing A.lopezi priority to 24±2h did not increase A.lopezi survival. A.diversicornis survival, however, increased to 0.43 when A.diversicornis was given 24 ± 2 h priority. A.diversicornis eggs took 19 h longer than A.lopezi eggs to hatch. This could explain the difference in competitive abilities in multiparasitized hosts.
- 4 The observed difference in host selection behaviour between A.lopezi and A.diversicornis is in accordance with the different benefits of multiparasitism: A.lopezi gains more than A.diversicornis because of its superior within-host competitive abilities.
- 5 Neither species avoided multiparasitism completely. The low survival probability of A.diversicornis in multiparasitized hosts may partly explain its failure to establish when introduced into Africa as part of a biological control programme of P.manihoti.

The presence of the embryo axis promotes starch hydrolysis incotyledons of Phaseolus vulgaris and, although reduced ratesof enzyme activity proceed in its absence, weight loss fromthe cotyledon is only significant in its presence. Applicationof gibberellic acid at various concentrations had no effectupon amylase or protease activity in either detached or embryonatedcotyledons: this was not the case for 6-benzyladenine whichpromoted both. In detached cotyledons amylolytic activity wasdirectly proportional to the concentration of applied 6-BA;concentrations below 106 M were unable to completelysubstitute for the presence of the axis, while, above 106M, hydrolytic activity higher than that of treated embryonatedcotyledons was observed. Increasing the concentration of 6-BAhad no effect, however, upon the amylolytic activity of embryonatedcotyledons. Detached cotyledons showed an increased chlorophyllcontent and 6-BA treatment further increased this; the proportionsof chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b remained unaltered. An inhibitor of amylase activity, destroyed by heating, is presentin embryonated cotyledons and can depress amylolysis in detachedcotyledons which appear to be inhibitor-free. The results intotal suggest that the developing axis may regulate reservehydrolysis in three distinct manners: firstly, by stimulatingthe synthesis of amylase via hormonal control, most probablya cytokinin; secondly, by checking the rate of amylolysis bymeans of an amylase inhibitor; and, thirdly, by being a sinkfor the products of reserve degradation. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Lechriopyla mystax Lynch, 1930 and Plagiopyla minula Powers, 1933 contain hydrogenosome-methanogen assemblages similar to those reported for other plagiopylid ciliates. These assemblages are stacks of elongate ovoid hydrogenosomes alternating with methanogens; these stacks are surrounded by cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum that are often accompanied by Golgi complexes. The individual methanogens in the larger ciliate, L. mystax, are about four times the volume of those in the smaller ciliate, P. minuta, but both ciliates appear to contain Gram-negative methanococcoid bacteria, possibly Methanoplanus sp. The endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi complex probably plays a significant role in exploitation of the methanogens by the host ciliate. 相似文献

A re-examination of the trilobite Baniaspis globosa Destombes (Phacopina) from the Ashgill of the Anti-Atlas (Morocco) shows that it has several derived characters which allow us to classify it in the family Calmoniidae. Calmoniids were characteristic members of the Malvino-Kaffric province during the Lower Devonian. Hence we regard the origins of this palaeogeographic province as located on the northern Gondwanan margin as early as Ashgill, or even Caradoc, times. We agree with those authors who have suggested that the trilobite associations present in the Anti-Atlas, the Montagne Noire (France) and Bohemia during the earlier Ordovician argue against the existence of a 'proto-Tethys' ocean. 相似文献

1. Time perception is seldom studied in invertebrates, with the limited experimental evidence being insufficient to provide a comprehensive pattern of the capacity of invertebrates to measure time and use it in decision‐making processes. 2. In this study, it was hypothesized that insect parasitoids have evolved the capacity to measure time precisely and to use it to optimize foraging decisions related to host exploitation. To examine time perception in females of the gregarious egg parasitoid Trichogramma euproctidis, the present study used their ability to adjust their investment (number of eggs laid) in a host to the initial transit duration (interval between the first contact with the host and the following contact with the substrate). Females utilize this method to assess host egg size, as a large egg necessarily requires more time to evaluate than a small host. In this study, the initial transit duration for a given sized egg was artificially extended by suspending it. 3. For similar sized hosts, female T. euproctidis significantly increased both oviposition duration and progeny allocation following a longer initial transit duration. 4. These results demonstrate the intrinsic capacity of this parasitoid to measure time and to adjust their progeny investment accordingly. The study characterized the influence of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) on the growth response of two annual weeds to nitrogen. Plants were grown individually along a N gradient from 4 to 32 mmol l−1 and data were interpreted using growth analysis. Plant biomass increased with N concentration and was significantly higher for healthy than infected plants at the two highest N concentrations. Healthy plants of Portulaca oleracea L. were characterized by lower biomass allocation to leaves and higher biomass allocation to roots than infected plants; no change in biomass allocation was recorded for Stellaria media Vill. Relative growth rate ( rgr ), net assimilation rate ( nar ) and specific leaf area ( sla ) of plants increased with increasing N concentration. Healthy plants of P. oleracea were characterized by a higher rgr and nar and a lower sla than infected plants, whereas healthy S. media had a higher rgr but a similar nar and sla or leaf weight ratio ( lwr ) compared with infected plants. During the Llandeilo, the sandy lithological units which develop locally in the Armorican Massif, Spain and Morocco, are all characterized by similar trilobite associations in which endobenthic homalonotids. well adapted to shallow water and sandy substrate, are predominant. We have compared the biodiversity variations in moth communities between unmanaged forests and commercial forests in a mountainous environment (Pyrenees France). The aim was to evaluate the impact of forestry activities on moth diversity. The data collected from the insects were analysed with a Bayesian specific similarity index (noted SSP index) and by statistical biodiversity indexes comparison. It was seen that diversity and richness were decreased in the plantation compared to the unmanaged forest. Interestingly, the composition of the communities of moths was shown to be not only related to the presence/absence of host plants, but also to be in relation with changes in the differences in forest architecture (i.e. the relative coverage by the different vegetation levels). However, the moth community in the commercial forest still has a high capacity to converge with the moth community present in more natural forests. We report here a list of 177 species of moths, providing information on the distribution of some uncommon species, poorly studied as yet in the Pyrenees. 相似文献
