The corixid species breeding in temporary rock pools of Baltic archipelago live in a highly fragmented and unpredictable habitat. Shallow rock pools can dry out and be refilled repeatedly during a summer causing high mortality of immatures. In deeper pools, young nymphs face intense competition by older stages including cannibalism. The adult corixids move frequently between rock pools and are thus able to use currently available habitat for reproduction. In this dispersal behaviour, the ability to assess the local population density and hence select the more suitable low density patches would be advantageous. We studied the effect of local population density on the frequency of dispersive flights of Arctocorisa carinata (Sahlberg) and Callicorixa producta (Reuter) experimentally, using rock pools from which nymphs of both species were removed. The dispersal rates of marked C. producta adults were significantly lower from experimental rock pools than from normal density controls, leading to a concentration of C. producta adults in the experimental rock pools. Indications of immigration rate differences between the experimental and control pools were also observed. No clear differences were found in the superior competitor A. carinata.  相似文献

The effects of invasive macrophytes, water level fluctuations and predation on freshwater unionids Pyganodon grandis and Utterbackia imbecillis were studied in three small impoundments in Northeastern Texas in 2003–2005. Mussel density was sampled with quadrats. Mortality, associated with the water level fluctuations and predation, was estimated by collecting dead shells on the shore at about two month intervals. In two ponds, horizontal distribution of unionids was limited by dense beds of invasive and noxious macrophytes (mainly Eurasian watermilfoil Myriophyllum spicatum and American lotus Nelumbo lutea): mussel densities were significantly lower in these macrophyte beds (P < 0.001). In the third pond with the lowest density of macrophytes (stonewort Chara sp.), unionids were distributed more evenly, and the average unionid biomass was the highest among all ponds studied. Vertical distribution of unionids in all ponds was likely limited by low oxygen at depth >2 m. The total amount of shells found on the shore per year varied from 0.1% to 28% of the total population in the pond and was negatively correlated with water level (r = −0.72 to −0.81, P < 0.005). Pollen, phytolith, and plant macrofossil analyses were carried out on the cultural layers of Helsinki Old Town excavated by the Helsinki City Museum and dated to the 15–17th centuries. Cultural mineral soil layers, a former ditch, a well, one waste pit, one waste heap and three house areas were investigated. The results show that-within certain limits-pollen in the mineral soil reflects the cultural changes of the local settlement from rural to urban. Among the main anthropogenic indicators, the high NAP (non-arboreal pollen) frequencies, the low pollen concentration values, and especially the high frequencies of Cichoriaceae (Liguliflorae) pollen should be emphasized. The macrofossil data were used to determine the species list of the herb pollen and to make a more detailed reconstruction of the local vegetation at Helsinki Old Town.  相似文献

The major keto acids in arctic bramble,Rubus arcticus L. were investigated. The acids were isolated with anionic and cationic ion-exchange resins, converted to 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones, and purified with an Al2O3 column. The derivatives were separated on a silica gel G thin-layer plate and esterified with methanol-HCl and the methyl esters of the keto acid 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones formed were analyzed on an OV-1-glass capillary gas-liquid chromatography column and with mass spectrometry. 2-Oxoglutaric, pyruvic, oxaloacetic, and glyoxylic acids were identified. The gastrodermal cell types of Microstomum lineare (Turbellaria, Macrostomida) were studied by electron microscopy. Their immunoreactivity (IR) to bovine pancreatic peptide (BPP), FMRF-amide and vasotocin, somatostatin, neurotensin, ACTH, CCK, bombesin, secretin, gastrin/CCK and insulin antisera was tested by light microscopic immunocytochemical methods. In addition to granular club cells and phagocytic cells, neurons and neoblasts occur in the gastroderm of this turbellarian species. This is the first observation of neurons in the gastroderm of a flatworm. Dense-core vesicles (70–100 nm diameter), electron lucent cytoplasm and numerous Golgi complexes characterize the neurons. Unpolarized two-way synapses, neuromuscular junctions and polarized chemical synapses can be observed in the gastroderm. Neoblasts with large nuclei and scanty cytoplasm and differentiating cells containing clusters of basal bodies occur next to the basal lamina of the gastroderm. BPP-like, FMRF-amide-like and vasotocin-like immunoreactivity is demonstrated in the gastroderm. Both BPP and FMRF-amide IR is restricted to the basal cytoplasm of the granular club cells, while a different location for IR to vasotocin antiserum is observed. The status of the neuronal cell in the gastroderm of M. lineare is discussed in relation to endocrine (paracrine) cells and neurons in the gastroderm of invertebrates.  相似文献

Summary The nervous system (NS) of Microstomum lineare (Turbellaria, Macrostomida) was studied by electron and light microscopy, combined with fluorescence histochemistry (Falck-Hillarp method for biogenic monoamines). The NS is primitively organized, with a bilobed brain, two lateral nerve cords lacking commissures, and peripheral nerve cells scattered along the nerve cords. The stomatogastric NS, with a pharyngeal nerve ring, is joined to the central NS by a pair of connective ganglia. A green fluorescence in all parts of the NS indicates catecholaminergic neurons as the dominant neuron type.Ultrastructurally, two types of neurons were identified on the basis of their vesicle content: 1. Aminergic (catecholaminergic) neurons containing densecore vesicles of varying electron-density and size, i.e., small dense-core vesicles (diameter 50–100 nm), vesicles with a highly electron-dense core (60–140 nm), and vesicles with an eccentric dense-core. 2. Presumed peptidergic neuro-secretory neurons containing large granular vesicles (diameter about 200 nm) in the stomatogastric NS and peripheral parts of the central NS. In light microscopy, paraldehyde-thionin stained neurons were observed in the same areas.  相似文献

CD63 is a member of the transmembrane-4 glycoprotein superfamily (tetraspanins) implicated in the regulation of membrane protein trafficking, leukocyte recruitment, and adhesion processes. We have investigated the involvement of CD63 in endothelial cell (EC) signaling downstream of β1 integrin and VEGF. We report that silencing of CD63 in primary ECs arrested capillary sprouting and tube formation in vitro because of impaired adhesion and migration of ECs. Mechanistically, CD63 associated with both β1 integrin and the main VEGF receptor on ECs, VEGFR2. Our data suggest that CD63 serves to bridge between β1 integrin and VEGFR2 because CD63 silencing disrupted VEGFR2-β1 integrin complex formation identified using proximity ligation assays. Signaling downstream of β1 integrin and VEGFR2 was attenuated in CD63-silenced cells, although their cell surface expression levels remained unaffected. CD63 was furthermore required for efficient internalization of VEGFR2 in response to VEGF. Importantly, systemic delivery of VEGF failed to potently induce VEGFR2 phosphorylation and downstream signaling in CD63-deficient mouse lungs. Taken together, our findings demonstrate a previously unrecognized role for CD63 in coordinated integrin and receptor tyrosine kinase signaling in vitro and in vivo.  相似文献

Long-term dynamics in rock pool Daphnia metapopulations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Metapopulations of Daphnia longispina , D. magna and D. pulex on 16 islands containing 507 rock pools were studied over 17 yr (autumns 1982–1998). Two yearly samples were taken representing early and late summer conditions. A local extinction was assumed when a species was absent from a pool for more than one year. Average yearly extinction rates, calculated from probability of survival in age grouped data, were close to 20%, and number of extinctions was on average balanced by the number of colonizations. Extinction rates during the first year following colonization were 45–50% in all species, but later decreased to low values. In first-year data, single species populations of D. magna had lower extinction rates than in multi-species pools. In later years all species combinations had similar extinction rates. The average proportion of rock pools occupied by D. longispina in any given year was 0.178, by D. magna 0.169 and by D. pulex 0.056. In 22% of cases, coexistence was observed. 71% of the pools were colonized at least once. The distribution of shortest colonization distances was left-skewed, and median distances (7–8 m) were same in all species. The distribution of colonizations mostly corresponded to the expected frequencies calculated as the product of frequencies of source and target pools. Both D. longispina and D. magna colonized pools already occupied with a somewhat higher probability than empty pools. Probably owing to variation of habitat quality, Daphnia populations in some rock pools appear to be less prone to extinction, providing sources of dispersal to patches with higher extinction risk. The system appears to be at an approximate equilibrium, with several characteristics close to classical metapopulation system.  相似文献

Hibernation pattern in the garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) was studied at TA's of 0, 4, 6.5, and 9 degrees C during 6 months in each study winter. The animals were kept in darkness without food or water. Body temperature and the mean duration of the hibernation periods were ambient temperature dependent. The comparison of hibernation at different TA's was based on three features: the mean duration of the hibernation periods during the midwinter plateau, the existence of the initial and terminal phases with the changing length of the hibernation periods, and the differences between the sexes. The TA of 4 degrees C was the optimal TA for long-term hibernation. The difference between 4 degrees C and other TA's was greater in males. The TA's of 0 and 9 degrees C were near the lower and higher TA limits for long-term hibernation. Signs of the existence of a circannual rhythm were detected in the males toward the end of the hibernation season.  相似文献
