Habitat loss and hunting threaten bonobos (Pan paniscus), Endangered (IUCN) great apes endemic to lowland rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Conservation planning requires a current, data-driven, rangewide map of probable bonobo distribution and an understanding of key attributes of areas used by bonobos. We present a rangewide suitability model for bonobos based on a maximum entropy algorithm in which data associated with locations of bonobo nests helped predict suitable conditions across the species’ entire range. We systematically evaluated available biotic and abiotic factors, including a bonobo-specific forest fragmentation layer (forest edge density), and produced a final model revealing the importance of simple threat-based factors in a data poor environment. We confronted the issue of survey bias in presence-only models and devised a novel evaluation approach applicable to other taxa by comparing models built with data from geographically distinct sub-regions that had higher survey effort. The model’s classification accuracy was high (AUC = 0.82). Distance from agriculture and forest edge density best predicted bonobo occurrence with bonobo nests more likely to occur farther from agriculture and in areas of lower edge density. These results suggest that bonobos either avoid areas of higher human activity, fragmented forests, or both, and that humans reduce the effective habitat of bonobos. The model results contribute to an increased understanding of threats to bonobo populations, as well as help identify priority areas for future surveys and determine core bonobo protection areas. 相似文献

Plants of Sorghum bicolor (C4 species) were grown at different nitrate or ammonium concentrations (0.5, 5, 20 and 50 mM) in order to examine the effect of nitrogen nutrition on growth, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and antioxidant enzymes activities in both roots and leaves of 30-day-old plants. At high NO3? levels (20 and 50 mM) the fresh weight was significantly higher. When the nitrogen source was in ammonium form, the leaf and root mass increased drastically at low concentration 5 mM and significantly at 20 mM, however similar fresh weight was found at high level of ammonium (50 mM). The leaves catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities and the roots glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase activities were significantly higher in the NH4+-fed plants than those grown in the nitrate medium. Activity and proteins levels of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase in both leaves and roots of sorghum plants were increased progressively with increasing external nitrogen concentration. This increase was more pronounced at high level of ammonium (50 mM), being 2-fold at 50 mM of NO3? and 3-fold at 50 mM of NH4+. Our results suggested that antioxidant enzymes activities and PEPC play a key role in ammonium detoxification and tolerance in sorghum plants. 相似文献

A total of 73 blood samples (56 from smokers and 17 from nonsmokers) were collected to determine the concentrations of selected
heavy metal in the whole blood of smokers and nonsmokers living in and around the city of Amman, Jordan. Analysis of heavy
metals in the whole blood samples of various groups took in consideration the number of cigarettes smoked per day. The analysis
of blood samples was carried out using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. This study aimed to evaluate
the blood metal levels in smokers and nonsmokers and to assess the influence of smoking cigarettes on blood metal levels.
The results were compared with those from a control group. The results indicated that the average concentrations of cadmium
(Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se) were 0.0313, 0.344, 2.328, 3.214, and 0.332 mg/L, respectively.
Statistical analysis of results indicated that these average concentrations were significantly higher compared with the average
concentrations in nonsmokers (P < 0.05). Moreover, the correlations between blood metal and other blood metal levels in smokers, the correlations between
blood metal and other blood metal levels in nonsmokers, and the correlations between blood metal concentration in smokers
and its concentration in nonsmokers were calculated. The standard reference material (blood serum National Institute of Standards
and Technology 1598) and the quality control were used to validate the reliability of the method used for the estimation of
heavy metals in blood samples. Results revealed that there was an agreement between the certified values and the measured
values. 相似文献

The diet and feeding behaviour of the kipunji (Rungwecebus kipunji) was studied over 45 months, the first dietary analysis for this species. During 9498 h of direct observation of 34 kipunji
groups, a list of 122 identified foodplants was recorded. The list represents 60 families, including 64 trees, 30 herbs, 9
climbers, 7 shrubs, 6 lianas, 3 grasses and 3 ferns. Kipunji were observed eating bark, young and mature leaves, ripe and
unripe fruits, flowers, pith, seed pods, rhizomes, tubers, shoots and stalks. Invertebrates, fungi, moss, lichen, and soil
were also eaten. Macaranga capensis var. capensis, an early successional tree, was the most commonly consumed species, with leaves, leaf stalks, pith, flowers and bark all
eaten. We demonstrate that the kipunji is an omnivorous dietary generalist, favouring mature and immature leaves, ripe and
unripe fruits and bark in similar proportions, with an almost comparable fondness for leaf stalks and flowers. Kipunji appear
to be adaptable foragers able to modify their diet seasonally, being more folivorous in the dry season and more frugivorous
in the wet. Whereas more ripe fruit is eaten in the wet season, the proportion of unripe fruit remains similar across the
year. The proportion of mature leaves and pith increases throughout the dry season at the expense of ripe fruits and bark,
and this may compensate nutritionally for the lack of available dry-season ripe fruits. Relatively more pith is eaten in the
dry season, more stalks at the end of the dry and beginning of the wet seasons, and bark consumption increases as the rainfall
rises. 相似文献

Methods for the identification of the sex and species of individuals from samples non-invasively taken from humans and gorillas were established. Amplification of a segment of amelogenin (AMG), which is an X–Y homologous gene, using two pairs of primers from human AMG, revealed both X- and Y-specific bands. The possibility of sex identification was examined by typing the AMG gene using hair and fecal samples from captive western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in Japan and hair samples from wild eastern lowland gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri) in the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo, which were sexed by direct observation. Species-specific bands of AMG in gorillas and humans were identified by restriction fragment length polymorphisms analysis. These tests could be used for sexing unidentified individuals of wild western and eastern lowland gorillas, and screening contamination of human DNA from non-invasively acquired samples. 相似文献

The dependence of leaf hydraulic conductance on irradiance during HPFM measurements: any role for stomatal response? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper examines the dependence of whole leaf hydraulic conductance to liquid water (K(L)) on irradiance when measured with a high pressure flowmeter (HPFM). During HPFM measurements, water is perfused into leaves faster than it evaporates hence water infiltrates leaf air spaces and must pass through stomates in the liquid state. Since stomates open and close under high versus low irradiance, respectively, the possibility exists that K(L) might change with irradiance if stomates close tightly enough to restrict water movement. However, the dependence of K(L) on irradiance could be due to a direct effect of irradiance on the hydraulic properties of other tissues in the leaf. In the present study, K(L) increased with irradiance for 6 of the 11 species tested. Whole leaf conductance to water vapour, g(L), was used as a proxy for stomatal aperture and the time-course of changes in K(L) and g(L) was studied during the transition from low to high irradiance and from high to low irradiance. Experiments showed that in some species K(L) changes were not paralleled by g(L) changes. Measurements were also done after perfusion of leaves with ABA which inhibited the g(L) response to irradiance. These leaves showed the same K(L) response to irradiance as control leaves. These experimental results and theoretical calculations suggest that the irradiance dependence of K(L) is more consistent with an effect on extravascular (and/or vascular) tissues rather than stomatal aperture. Irradiance-mediated stimulation of aquaporins or hydrogel effects in leaf tracheids may be involved. 相似文献
