Algal production of dissolved organic carbon and the regeneration of nutrients from dissolved organic carbon by bacteria are important aspects of nutrient cycling in the sea, especially when inorganic nitrogen is limiting. Dissolved free amino acids are a major carbon source for bacteria and can be used by phytoplankton as a nitrogen source. We examined the interactions between the phytoplankton species Emiliania huxleyi and Thalassiosira pseudonana and a bacterial isolate from the North Sea. The organisms were cultured with eight different amino acids and a protein as the only nitrogen sources, in pure and mixed cultures. Of the two algae, only E. huxleyi was able to grow on amino acids. The bacterium MD1 used all substrates supplied, except serine. During growth of MD1 in pure culture, ammonium accumulated in the medium. Contrary to the expectation, the percentage of ammonium regenerated from the amino acids taken up showed no correlation with the substrate C/N ratio. In mixed culture, the algae grew well in those cultures in which the bacteria grew well. The bacterial yields (cell number) were also higher in mixed culture than in pure culture. In the cultures of MD1 and T. pseudonana, the increase in bacterial yield (number of cells) over that of the pure culture was comparable to the bacterial yield in mixed culture on a mineral medium. This result suggests that T. pseudonana excreted a more-or-less-constant amount of carbon. The bacterial yields in mixed cultures with E. huxleyi showed a smaller and less consistent difference than those of the pure cultures of MD1. It is possible that the ability of E. huxleyi to use amino acids influenced the bacterial yield. The results suggest that interactions between algae and bacteria influence the regeneration of nitrogen from organic carbon and that this influence differs from one species to another.  相似文献

Background  

The study aims to assess the therapeutic benefits of motor imagery training in stroke patients with persistent motor weakness. There is evidence to suggest that mental rehearsal of movement can produce effects normally attributed to practising the actual movements. Imagining hand movements could stimulate the redistribution of brain activity, which accompanies recovery of hand function, thus resulting in a reduced motor deficit.  相似文献

Low copy number plasmids in bacteria require segregation for stable inheritance through cell division. This is often achieved by a parABC locus, comprising an ATPase ParA, DNA-binding protein ParB and a parC region, encoding ParB-binding sites. These minimal components space plasmids equally over the nucleoid, yet the underlying mechanism is not understood. Here we investigate a model where ParA-ATP can dynamically associate to the nucleoid and is hydrolyzed by plasmid-associated ParB, thereby creating nucleoid-bound, self-organizing ParA concentration gradients. We show mathematically that differences between competing ParA concentrations on either side of a plasmid can specify regular plasmid positioning. Such positioning can be achieved regardless of the exact mechanism of plasmid movement, including plasmid diffusion with ParA-mediated immobilization or directed plasmid motion induced by ParB/parC-stimulated ParA structure disassembly. However, we find experimentally that parABC from Escherichia coli plasmid pB171 increases plasmid mobility, inconsistent with diffusion/immobilization. Instead our observations favor directed plasmid motion. Our model predicts less oscillatory ParA dynamics than previously believed, a prediction we verify experimentally. We also show that ParA localization and plasmid positioning depend on the underlying nucleoid morphology, indicating that the chromosomal architecture constrains ParA structure formation. Our directed motion model unifies previously contradictory models for plasmid segregation and provides a robust mechanistic basis for self-organized plasmid spacing that may be widely applicable.  相似文献

In this single case study, visuospatial neglect patient P1 demonstrated a dissociation between an intact ability to make appropriate reflexive eye movements to targets in the neglected field with latencies of <400 ms, while failing to report targets presented at such durations in a separate verbal detection task. In contrast, there was a failure to evoke the usually robust Remote Distractor Effect in P1, even though distractors in the neglected field were presented at above threshold durations. Together those data indicate that the tight coupling that is normally shown between attention and eye movements appears to be disrupted for low-level orienting in P1. A comparable disruption was also found for high-level cognitive processing tasks, namely reading and scene scanning. The findings are discussed in relation to sampling, attention and awareness in neglect.  相似文献

Monitoring of algae in Dutch rivers: does it meet its goals?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Observations on phytoplankton in the lower reaches of the rivers Rhine and Meuse were carried out in the framework of the national monitoring programme of the main water systems in The Netherlands. Seasonal changes in density and species composition were analysed to detect the major variables and to discuss whether this monitoring meets its goals. Phytoplankton reached peak densities of 140 and 65 μg L-1 Chl a in the Rhine and Meuse, respectively. Overall density was correlated with seasonal variation in water discharge rather than with nutrient concentrations, that are high in both rivers. The position of sampling sites in relation to the downstream development of the plankton was very important, especially in the regulated Meuse. Despite hydrographic and chemical differences between the two rivers, many species, predominantly diatoms and green algae, were shared. The occurrence of the diatom Skeletonema subsalsum in the Rhine and the green algae Neodesmus danubialis, Micractinium pusillum and Pseudotetrastrum punctatum in the Meuse (1992, but not 1996) was interpreted as a feature related, respectively, to the high salinity of the Rhine and specific riverine conditions of the Meuse. In general the potamoplankton was characterised as an opportunistic assemblage exploiting the high nutrient contents and disturbed hydrography of both rivers. Nevertheless, the phytoplankton contributed to the characterisation of the present river communities, ones that differ rather strongly in historic records. Although year to year variation in phytoplankton density is mainly related to variation in water discharge, phytoplankton biomass did increase as a result of eutrophication over a period of decades. The widespread nature of many of today's potamoplankton species in the two rivers render these organisms less useful for indicating short-term changes in water quality. However the importance of phytoplankton in trophic relationships merits its inclusion in the monitoring of riverine ecosystems. Three populations of the perennial grass Agrostis capillaris, growing on limestone derived clay with and without natural enrichment of the heavy metals cadmium, lead, and zinc, and on a sandy soil polluted by a metal smelter have been investigated with regard to the percentage and seasonality of infection with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi and its impact on mineral nutrition.In all populations VAM infection was lowest during winter, and highest during late summer and autumn. The population at the metal smelter site was less infected by VAM fungi than both other populations. The concentration of mineral nutrients for the three populations was clearly related to the soil concentration, but hardly modified by the degree of VAM infection.  相似文献

The interactions of phytoplankton and bacteria in a nitrogen-limitedsteady-state system with an organic nitrogen compound or ammoniumas the sole nitrogen source were modelled. The effects of variousalgal excretion rates and two different mathematical representationsof excretion were examined. The model predicted that higherexcretion elevated the bacterial steady-state biomass, and loweredthe algal biomass. Bacterial respiration, which directly determinednitrogen regeneration, had an important effect on the system.The bacterial growth yield in the model was mainly a functionof the growth rate, and not of the nitrogen:carbon ratio ofthe substrate. In one version of the model, where the excretionof organic carbon increased with decreasing growth rate, themodel started to oscillate when the multiplication product ofmaximum specific excretion of excreted organic carbon (EOC)and the bacterial yield on EOC exceeded the dilution rate, irrespectiveof the form of nitrogen (ammonium or dissolved organic nitrogen)in the medium. The model results were compared with chemostatexperiments with the alga Emiliania huxleyi and a bacterialisolate in pure and mixed culture at two different dilutionrates. The carbon and nitrogen biomass of the bacteria was {smalltilde}1.5 times higher in mixed culture than in pure culture.In the experiments with low dilution rate, the recovery of nitrogenin the form of biomass, ammonium or amino acids was low, suggestingthe excretion by the algae of a refractory nitrogen-containingproduct which the bacteria could not use.  相似文献
