Dominance relationships among male chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, were analyzed. Although all
adolescent males were unequivocally subordinate to all adult males, dominance relationships within the age classes were much
less clear. Especially among adolescent males, few pant-grunts or agonistic interactions occurred. While adolescent males
frequently pant-grunted at adult males, these latter males, except the alpha and the youngest, rarely pant-grunted to one
another. This suggests that a difference of social status exists between adolescent and adult males. Adult males rarely display
overt dominance to one another probably because the presence of other males affects their interactions. Moreover, they seem
to try to keep their dominance relationship ambiguous when making it overt is not advantageous to them. This may be a political

In a long-term study of sexual behavior in Japanese macaques, we found that matrilineal inbreeding accounted for 2.9% of the copulations recorded for the Arashiyama B troop during 7 mating seasons between 1968 and 1984. Of the 906 copulatory dyads, 46 (5.1%) occurred among kin. Close matrilineal kin dyads (r = 1/2–1/8, 1.1% of the total of copulatory dyads) strongly avoided matrilineal inbreeding, but for remote kin dyads (r > 1/8, 4.0% of the total) the tendency was weaker in some years. Among the possible determinants of matrilineal inbreeding, we found that it tended to occur among younger and lower-ranking males as an effect of troop demographic changes. There is no significant association between female rank and matrilineal inbreeding. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that different degrees of kin relatedness are discriminated by individuals with respect to mate choice. 相似文献

Auditory pathways contain orderly representations of frequency selectivity, which begin at the cochlea and are transmitted to the brainstem via topographically ordered axonal pathways. The mechanisms that establish these tonotopic maps are not known. Eph receptor tyrosine kinases and their ligands, the ephrins, have a demonstrated role in establishing topographic projections elsewhere in the brain, including the visual pathway. Here, we have examined the function of these proteins in the formation of auditory frequency maps. In birds, the first central auditory nucleus, n. magnocellularis (NM), projects tonotopically to n. laminaris (NL) on both sides of the brain. We previously showed that the Eph receptor EphA4 is expressed in a tonotopic gradient in the chick NL, with higher frequency regions showing greater expression than lower frequency regions. Here we misexpressed EphA4 in the developing auditory brainstem from embryonic day 2 (E2) through E10, when NM axons make synaptic contact with NL. We then evaluated topography along the frequency axis using both anterograde and retrograde labeling in both the ipsilateral and contralateral NM-NL pathways. We found that after misexpression, NM regions project to a significantly broader proportion of NL than in control embryos, and that both the ipsilateral map and the contralateral map show this increased divergence. These results support a role for EphA4 in establishing tonotopic projections in the auditory system, and further suggest a general role for Eph family proteins in establishing topographic maps in the nervous system. 相似文献

chimpanzee from Mahale , was remarkably lower than the mean of the other six younger adult female chimpanzees and categorized
as osteoporosis. Posture, locomotion, and trunk-sacral anatomy of chimpanzees may have prevented fractures in Wansombo, whose
BMD was below human osteoporosis criteria.

We have analyzed the ranging patterns of the Mimikire group (M group) of chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. During 16 years, the chimpanzees moved over a total area of 25.2 or 27.4 km2, as estimated by the grid-cell or minimum convex polygon (MCP) methods, respectively. Annually, the M group used an average of 18.4 km2, or approximately 70 %, of the total home-range area. The chimpanzees had used 80 % of their total home range after 5 years and 95 % after 11 years. M group chimpanzees were observed more than half of the time in areas that composed only 15 % of their total home range. Thus, they typically moved over limited areas, visiting other parts of their range only occasionally. On average, the chimpanzees used 7.6 km2 (in MCP) per month. Mean monthly range size was smallest at the end of the rainy season and largest at the end of the dry season, but there was much variability from year to year. The chimpanzees used many of the same areas every year when Saba comorensis fruits were abundant between August and January. In contrast, the chimpanzees used several different areas of their range in June. Here range overlap between years was relatively small. Over the 16 years of the study we found that the M group reduced their use of the northern part of their range and increased their frequency of visits to the eastern mountainous side of their home range. Changes in home-range size correlated positively with the number of adult females but not with the number of adult males. This finding does not support a prediction of the male-defended territory model proposed for some East African chimpanzee unit-groups. 相似文献

To define the developmental expression of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) large subunit mRNA and protein, samples of small intestine and liver were collected from 40-day gestation fetal, 2-day-old newborn, 3-week-old suckling, and 2-month-old weanling swine. In fetal animals, MTP mRNA expression was high in intestine and liver. Postnatally, jejunal expression paralleled the intake of a high-fat breast milk diet and declined after weaning. Ileal expression was comparable with that of jejunum in 2-day-old animals, but declined to low levels afterward. Hepatic expression declined postnatally and remained low. MTP protein expression generally paralleled mRNA expression, except in fetal intestine in which no 97 kDa protein was detected. In 2-day-old piglets, a high-triacylglycerol diet increased jejunal and ileal MTP mRNA levels, as compared to a low-triacylglycerol diet. To test the roles of glucocorticoids and fatty acids in MTP regulation, a newborn swine enterocyte cell line (IPEC-1) was used. Except at day 2 of differentiation, dexamethasone did not influence MTP expression. Fatty acids either up-regulated or down-regulated MTP expression, depending on the specific fatty acid and duration of exposure. Although programmed genetic cues regulate MTP expression during development, clearly the amount and fatty acid composition of dietary lipid also play regulatory roles. 相似文献

Previous studies suggest that oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) cellular uptake is cell cycle-dependent which may have important implications in cancer cell targeting. To further our understanding of ODN transport and activity, this study examines the relationships between the cell cycle, ODN cellular uptake, intracellular transport, and activity. An antisense c-myc ODN 21-mer was used to study ODN cellular uptake in Rauscher erythroleukemia cells synchronized by either chemical methods or flow cytometry. ODN uptake was examined using subcellular fractionation and confocal fluorescence microscopy. Western blot analysis was used to measure ODN-mediated decreases in c-myc protein levels. Intracellular ODN distribution and extent of uptake was influenced by the phase of the cell cycle, but the mechanism of uptake was not. The relative activity of the antisense ODN was positively correlated to ODN distribution to the cytosol, but negatively correlated to total cellular uptake. Although ODN total cellular uptake is positively influenced by the cell cycle, retention of the ODN in the cytosol (presumably extra-vesicularly) appeared to be relevant in determining the activity of an antisense ODN. Novel methods to target cytosol-acting drugs to the cytoplasm may therefore be warrented. 相似文献

If an implantable artificial heart can be developed, it should prove beneficial to a significant group of patients. A variety of energy sources, such as biologic, electromagnetic, and nuclear, are under evaluation. Currently, biologic fuel cell technology is not sufficiently advanced to permit its extrapolation to the power levels required for implantable circulatory support systems. Electromagnetic systems have the disadvantage of heavy batteries of considerable bulk requiring frequent recharging. Radioisotope-fueled thermal engine systems have the potential of providing degrees of freedom not possible with rechargeable units. Cells in tendon deposit parallel arrays of collagen fibrils to form a functional tissue, but how this is achieved is unknown. The cellular mechanism is thought to involve the formation of intracellular collagen fibrils within Golgi to plasma membrane carriers. This is facilitated by the intracellular processing of procollagen to collagen by members of the tolloid and ADAMTS families of enzymes. The carriers subsequently connect to the extracellular matrix via finger-like projections of the plasma membrane, known as fibripositors. In this study we have shown, using three-dimensional electron microscopy, the alignment of fibripositors with intracellular fibrils as well as an orientated cable of actin filaments lining the cytosolic face of a fibripositor. To demonstrate a specific role for the cytoskeleton in coordinating extracellular matrix assembly, cytochalasin was used to disassemble actin filaments and nocodazole or colchicine were used to disrupt microtubules. Microtubule disruption delayed procollagen transport through the secretory pathway, but fibripositor numbers were unaffected. Actin filament disassembly resulted in rapid loss of fibripositors and a subsequent disappearance of intracellular fibrils. Procollagen secretion or processing was not affected by cytochalasin treatment, but the parallelism of extracellular collagen fibrils was altered. In this case a significant proportion of collagen fibrils were found to no longer be orientated with the long axis of the tendon. The results suggest an important role for the actin cytoskeleton in the alignment and organization of the collagenous extracellular matrix in embryonic tendon. 相似文献
