Phytoplankton production and respiration in the Blue Nile and White Nile at Khartoum were measured during the period November 1969–January 1971 using the light and dark bottle technique. Maximum rates of production coincided with periods of maximum phytoplankton densities. In the Blue Nile gross production varied between 0.00 gCm–3d–1 during the flood season and 2.19 gCm–3d–1 (0.49 mgO2l–1h–1) during November 1969. In the White Nile the range was from 0.41 gCm–3d–1 (0.09 MgO2l–1h–1) in May to 3.74 gCm–3d–1 (0.83 MgO2l–1h–1) in November. The maximum rates of respiration in the Blue Nile and White Nile were 0.10 and 0.63 MgO2l–1h–1 respectively. The ratios net:gross production were generally higher in the White Nile than in the Blue Nile.  相似文献

A highly repeated DNA sequence from the genome of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus has been isolated and characterized. This 1,202-bp sequence (SC1) represents about 0.24% of the Scutellospora castanea genome, estimated to be 1 pg by flow cytometry. The sequence was shown to be a Scutellospora-specific probe in Southern blots and dot blot hybridizations. After complete sequencing of SC1, PCR primers were generated and used to amplify a 907-bp fragment from spores of S. castanea or from colonized Allium porrum roots. No amplification products were obtained with DNA from either spores or mycorrhizal root of other species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. These primers were sufficiently specific for unequivocal detection of S. castanea in planta.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with using multivariate binary observations to estimate the probabilities of unobserved classes with scientific meanings. We focus on the setting where additional information about sample similarities is available and represented by a rooted weighted tree. Every leaf in the given tree contains multiple samples. Shorter distances over the tree between the leaves indicate a priori higher similarity in class probability vectors. We propose a novel data integrative extension to classical latent class models with tree-structured shrinkage. The proposed approach enables (1) borrowing of information across leaves, (2) estimating data-driven leaf groups with distinct vectors of class probabilities, and (3) individual-level probabilistic class assignment given the observed multivariate binary measurements. We derive and implement a scalable posterior inference algorithm in a variational Bayes framework. Extensive simulations show more accurate estimation of class probabilities than alternatives that suboptimally use the additional sample similarity information. A zoonotic infectious disease application is used to illustrate the proposed approach. The paper concludes by a brief discussion on model limitations and extensions.  相似文献

Summary Mouse morulae are known to undergo cavitation as soon as some external cells have entered the sixth cell cycle (Garbutt et al. 1987). Since the early cytological features of cavitation are still unclear, we undertook a careful ultrastructural analysis of late morulae-nascent blastocysts. In addition, since maturation of lysosomes might be involved in the first step of cavity formation, we focused our attention on these organelles by means of the cytochemical localization of trimetaphosphatase activity and by the study of the effects of chloroquine on precavitation embryos. Our results suggest that cavitation starts in a few external cells (presumably competent cells entering the sixth cell cycle), by the chloroquine-sensitive formation of degradative autophagic vacuoles engulfing lipid droplets and vacuoles containing osmiophilic material. These complex structures enlarge (as a result of lipid metabolism?) and so transform into intrablastomeric cavities which, by means of a membrane fusion process, very rapidly become extracellular cavities that coalesce. The abembryonic pole of the blastocyst is determined in this way. Moreover, we suggest that the juxtacoelic cytoplasmic processes covering the inner cell mass (ICM) cells, which are known to restrict the expression of their totipotency during early cavitation (Fleming et al. 1984), are the latest remnants of the walls of the growing intrablastomeric cavities.  相似文献

Temperature and salinity tolerances of juvenile Metapenaeus bennetlae Racek and Dall were estimated by abrupt exposure to critically high or low levels of each factor following acclimation to 12 combinations of temperature (17, 22, 27 and 32°C) with salinity (5, 20 and 35‰.). No significant differences were found between tolerances of males and females. Acclimation temperature influenced both temperature and salinity tolerances, while acclimation salinity affected only the salinity tolerance. Irrespective of temperature and salinity acclimation levels, juvenile M. bennettae were able to tolerate temperatures from 8.1 to 32.9°C and salinities from 1.0 to 62.0‰ These findings are discussed in relation to similar published studies.  相似文献
