Coloration of phyllopods varies from place to place and from one life stage to another. It ranges from translucent or whitish through gray, blue, green, orange, and reddish. Here, we present experimental evidence for a food- dependent color pattern inThamnocephalus platyurus Packard. The presence or absence of the synthetic pigment trans — — carotene in a baker's yeast diet was the controlling factor. All the 24 old larvae used in the experiment were whitish in color. From day 6 until the end the experiment (day 11), 100% of the shrimps under a diet with synthetic trans — — carotene (treatment 1) exhibited a characteristic color pattern which consisted of an orange color in the cercopods, and in all theracopods; the rest of the body exhibited no particular color. In comparison, 100% of the shrimps under a diet without synthetic trans — — carotene (treatment 2) were whitish throughout the body. In females from treatment 1, the ovaries and oocytes were green-bluish, while in females from treatment 2 the ovaries and oocytes were whitish. No significant differences in survival and growth were found, except that at day 9, there was a significant difference in growth, the females with the synthetic trans — — carotene group growing faster. 相似文献

This paper reports new distribution records of large branchiopods for Mexico following a three year survey of the Baja California
peninsula. The occurance of the anostracans Thamnocephalus mexicanus (Linder, 1941) and T. platyurus (Packard, 1877), the
notostracan Lepidurus lemmoni (Holmes, 1894), and the spinicaudatans Eulimnadia cylindrova (Belk, 1989) and E. texana (Packard,1871),
all represent the first records for the peninsula. An undescribed species of the anostracan genus Streptocephalus is recorded
from the state of Baja California (Norte). The occurrence of the notostracan genus Triops and four other anostracan species
on the peninsula is also confirmed. The conchostracan Cyclestheria hislopi (Baird, 1859) is recorded from the state of Quintana
Roo. The collections of Lepidurus and Cyclestheria are the first records for México. These records increase the number of
species of large branchiopods reported fromMéxico to 36: 20 Anostraca, 3 Notostraca, 11 Spinicaudata, and 2Laevicaudata.

Investigations of how species compositional changes interact with other aspects of global change, such as nutrient mobilization, to affect ecosystem processes are currently lacking. Many studies have shown that mixed species plant litters exhibit non‐additive effects on ecosystem functions in terrestrial and aquatic systems. Using a full‐factorial design of three leaf litter species with distinct initial chemistries (carbon:nitrogen; C:N) and breakdown rates (Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer rubrum and Rhododendron maximum), we tested for additive and non‐additive effects of litter species mixing on breakdown in southeastern US streams with and without added nutrients (N and phosphorus). We found a non‐additive (antagonistic) effect of litter mixing on breakdown rates under reference conditions but not when nutrient levels were elevated. Differential responses among single‐species litters to nutrient enrichment contributed to this result. Antagonistic litter mixing effects on breakdown were consistent with trends in litter C:N, which were higher for mixtures than for single species, suggesting lower microbial colonization on mixtures. Nutrient enrichment lowered C:N and had the greatest effect on the lowest‐ (R. maximum) and the least effect on the highest‐quality litter species (L. tulipifera), resulting in lower interspecific variation in C:N. Detritivore abundance was correlated with litter C:N in the reference stream, potentially contributing to variation in breakdown rates. In the nutrient‐enriched stream, detritivore abundance was higher for all litter and was unrelated to C:N. Thus, non‐additive effects of litter mixing were suppressed by elevated streamwater nutrients, which increased nutrient content of all litter, reduced variation in C:N among litter species and increased detritivore abundance. Nutrients reduced interspecific variation among plant litters, the base of important food web pathways in aquatic ecosystems, affecting predicted mixed‐species breakdown rates. More generally, world‐wide mobilization of nutrients may similarly modify other effects of biodiversity on ecosystem processes. 相似文献

The amino-terminal domain containing the ligand binding site of the G protein-coupled metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) consists of two lobes that close upon agonist binding. In this study, we explored the ligand binding pocket of the Group III mGluR4 receptor subtype using site-directed mutagenesis and radioligand binding. The selection of 16 mutations was guided by a molecular model of mGluR4, which was based on the crystal structure of the mGluR1 receptor. Lysines 74 and 405 are present on lobe I of mGluR4. The mutation of lysine 405 to alanine virtually eliminated the binding of the agonist [(3)H]l-amino-4-phosphonobutyrate ([(3)H]l-AP4). Thus lysine 405, which is conserved in all eight mGluRs, likely represents a fundamental recognition residue for ligand binding to the mGluRs. Single point mutations of lysines 74 or 317, which are not conserved in the mGluRs, to alanine had no effect on agonist affinity, whereas mutation of both residues together caused a loss of ligand binding. Mutation of lysine 74 in mGluR4, or the analogous lysine in mGluR8, to tyrosine (mimicking mGluR1 at this position) produced a large decrease in binding. The reduction in binding is likely due to steric hindrance of the phenolic side chain of tyrosine. The mutation of glutamate 287 to alanine, which is present on lobe II and is not conserved in the mGluR family, caused a loss of [(3)H]l-AP4 binding. We conclude that the determinants of high affinity ligand binding are dispersed across lobes I and II. Our results define a microenvironment within the binding pocket that encompasses several positively charged amino acids that recognize the negatively charged phosphonate group of l-AP4 or the endogenous compound l-serine-O-phosphate. 相似文献

Rising temperatures and nutrient enrichment are co‐occurring global‐change drivers that stimulate microbial respiration of detrital carbon, but nutrient effects on the temperature dependence of respiration in aquatic ecosystems remain uncertain. We measured respiration rates associated with leaf litter, wood, and fine benthic organic matter (FBOM) across seasonal temperature gradients before (PRE) and after (ENR1, ENR2) experimental nutrient (nitrogen [N] and phosphorus [P]) additions to five forest streams. Nitrogen and phosphorus were added at different N:P ratios using increasing concentrations of N (~80–650 μg/L) and corresponding decreasing concentrations of P (~90–11 μg/L). We assessed the temperature dependence, and microbial (i.e., fungal) drivers of detrital mass‐specific respiration rates using the metabolic theory of ecology, before vs. after nutrient enrichment, and across N and P concentrations. Detrital mass‐specific respiration rates increased with temperature, exhibiting comparable activation energies (E, electronvolts [eV]) for all substrates (FBOM E = 0.43 [95% CI = 0.18–0.69] eV, leaf litter E = 0.30 [95% CI = 0.072–0.54] eV, wood E = 0.41 [95% CI = 0.18–0.64] eV) close to predicted MTE values. There was evidence that temperature‐driven increased respiration occurred via increased fungal biomass (wood) or increased fungal biomass‐specific respiration (leaf litter). Respiration rates increased under nutrient‐enriched conditions on leaves (1.32×) and wood (1.38×), but not FBOM. Respiration rates responded weakly to gradients in N or P concentrations, except for positive effects of P on wood respiration. The temperature dependence of respiration was comparable among years and across N or P concentration for all substrates. Responses of leaf litter and wood respiration to temperature and the combined effects of N and P were similar in magnitude. Our data suggest that the temperature dependence of stream microbial respiration is unchanged by nutrient enrichment, and that increased temperature and N + P availability have additive and comparable effects on microbial respiration rates. 相似文献

The recent discovery of a protein kinase activity in vaccinia virions led us to search for a viral protein which is phosphorylated in vivo. Vaccinia virus was radioactively labeled by infecting cells in the presence of (32)P(1). A phosphoprotein was isolated from purified delipidated virions by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The phosphoprotein appeared to be a specific viral component induced after infection. More than 60% of the phosphoprotein was associated with viral cores. The electrophoretic mobility of the protein suggested that it has a molecular weight of 11,000 to 12,000. Phosphoserine was liberated by acid hydrolysis and identified by electrophoresis with known standards. Tryptic digests of the purified phosphoprotein were analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis and chromatography on thin-layer cellulose plates, and a single major phosphopeptide was resolved. The high selectivity of phosphorylation suggested that the process has a specific function. 相似文献

We have produced yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) transgenic mice expressing normal (YAC18) and mutant (YAC46 and YAC72) huntingtin (htt) in a developmental and tissue-specific manner identical to that observed in Huntington's disease (HD). YAC46 and YAC72 mice show early electrophysiological abnormalities, indicating cytoplasmic dysfunction prior to observed nuclear inclusions or neurodegeneration. By 12 months of age, YAC72 mice have a selective degeneration of medium spiny neurons in the lateral striatum associated with the translocation of N-terminal htt fragments to the nucleus. Neurodegeneration can be present in the absence of macro- or microaggregates, clearly showing that aggregates are not essential to initiation of neuronal death. These mice demonstrate that initial neuronal cytoplasmic toxicity is followed by cleavage of htt, nuclear translocation of htt N-terminal fragments, and selective neurodegeneration. 相似文献

Streams and rivers are important conduits of terrestrially derived carbon (C) to atmospheric and marine reservoirs. Leaf litter breakdown rates are expected to increase as water temperatures rise in response to climate change. The magnitude of increase in breakdown rates is uncertain, given differences in litter quality and microbial and detritivore community responses to temperature, factors that can influence the apparent temperature sensitivity of breakdown and the relative proportion of C lost to the atmosphere vs. stored or transported downstream. Here, we synthesized 1025 records of litter breakdown in streams and rivers to quantify its temperature sensitivity, as measured by the activation energy (Ea, in eV). Temperature sensitivity of litter breakdown varied among twelve plant genera for which Ea could be calculated. Higher values of Ea were correlated with lower‐quality litter, but these correlations were influenced by a single, N‐fixing genus (Alnus). Ea values converged when genera were classified into three breakdown rate categories, potentially due to continual water availability in streams and rivers modulating the influence of leaf chemistry on breakdown. Across all data representing 85 plant genera, the Ea was 0.34 ± 0.04 eV, or approximately half the value (0.65 eV) predicted by metabolic theory. Our results indicate that average breakdown rates may increase by 5–21% with a 1–4 °C rise in water temperature, rather than a 10–45% increase expected, according to metabolic theory. Differential warming of tropical and temperate biomes could result in a similar proportional increase in breakdown rates, despite variation in Ea values for these regions (0.75 ± 0.13 eV and 0.27 ± 0.05 eV, respectively). The relative proportions of gaseous C loss and organic matter transport downstream should not change with rising temperature given that Ea values for breakdown mediated by microbes alone and microbes plus detritivores were similar at the global scale. 相似文献
