During a three-year field study of the socio-ecology of Sumatran orang-utans, their use of the canopy was investigated in the Gunung Leuser National Park, Indonesia. This paper concerns the positional behaviour of different age-sex classes of orang-utans. Adolescents and females with infants differed significantly from an adult male in the following respects: the use of locomotion types (more 'quadrumanous scrambling' and perhaps also 'quadrupedal walking' and less 'tree swaying'); substrate use during resting, and travelling and resting heights. We suggest that large body size restricts the travel route options in higher forest strata and necessitates the use of the lower stratum. Here, 'tree swaying' is an efficient method of progression, particularly for heavy animals. Mothers with infants are forced to travel in the lower zones as well. The fact that they return to a greater heights when they go to rest might suggest that they travel lower in spite of a greater predation risk.  相似文献

Recent field data indicate that MacKinnon’s model of the orang-utan’s sexual and agonistic activity needs to be revised. In this model, male reproductive activity is concentrated in an extended phase of subadulthood and in early adulthood. According to this model, the role of older adult males is primarily that of range guardian, and in that role they would ensure that the offspring they had generated earlier would have safe access to food resources. This study presents cases suggesting that subadult males, even though sexually active, may have low reproductive success. In previous studies adult males were shown to display less sexual initiative than subadult males. In this study an adult male was at times involved infrequent mating activity in response to proceptive activity of females in the course of consortship. This adult male proved to be a successful breeder, thus refuting the hypothesis of adult male sterility. The female is most likely to conceive through cooperative mating in lengthy consortships with the dominant resident adult male. We hypothesize that the extended subadult phase represents a submissive strategy, allowing subadult males to remain in the home range of adult males but with minimal reproductive success.  相似文献

High levels of the neuron-specific protein kinase C substrate, B-50 (= GAP43), are present in neurites and growth cones during neuronal development and regeneration. This suggests a hitherto nonelucidated role of this protein in neurite outgrowth. Comparable high levels of B-50 arise in the pheochromocytoma PC12 cell line during neurite formation. To get insight in the putative growth-associated function of B-50, we compared its ultrastructural localization in naive PC12 cells with its distribution in nerve growth factor (NGF)- or dibutyryl cyclic AMP (dbcAMP)-treated PC12 cells. B-50 immunogold labeling of cryosections of untreated PC12 cells is mainly associated with lysosomal structures, including multivesicular bodies, secondary lysosomes, and Golgi apparatus. The plasma membrane is virtually devoid of label. However, after 48-h NGF treatment of the cells, B-50 immunoreactivity is most pronounced on the plasma membrane. Highest B-50 immunoreactivity is observed on plasma membranes surrounding sprouting microvilli, lamellipodia, and filopodia. Outgrowing neurites are scattered with B-50 labeling, which is partially associated with chromaffin granules. In NGF-differentiated PC12 cells, B-50 immunoreactivity is, as in untreated cells, also associated with organelles of the lysosomal family and Golgi stacks. B-50 distribution in dbcAMP-differentiated cells closely resembles that in NGF-treated cells. The altered distribution of B-50 immunoreactivity induced by differentiating agents indicates a shift of the B-50 protein towards the plasma membrane. This translocation accompanies the acquisition of neuronal features of PC12 cells and points to a neurite growth-associated role for B-50, performed at the plasma membrane at the site of protrusion.  相似文献

We investigated the occurrence of postconflict social interactions in a group of Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus)that live in a large enclosure. We collected data during the mating and the nonmating seasons and analyzed them via two methods. Separate analyses for the two seasons yielded very similar results. Reconciliation and redirection occurred. But we found no evidence for consolation and postconflict kin-oriented affiliation. The consistency of these findings with those on other species of Macacaindicates that reconciliation and redirection are typical postconflict social interactions of macaque victims.  相似文献

The primate literature provides many indications not only that the nature of dyadic interactions is to a large extent determined by the relations of the interacting animals with others and between these others, but also of the existence of polyadic interactions in which more than two individuals are simultaneously involved. The objectives of the present study are to obtain a quantitative categorization of the agonistic interaction types of captive Java-monkeys and an analysis of their dynamics. After having described the agonistic behaviour patterns of Java-monkeys we shall discuss the categorization of agonistic interaction types (depending on the number of involvees: “dyads”, “triads” and “polyads”), the way in which these types can be further differentiated on the basis of the nature and the direction of the behaviours shown (e.g., different types of alliances), and the existence of so-called “sub-directed” behaviours (i.e., non-agonistic behaviours which are shown towards a dominant third animal more or less simultaneously with aggressive behaviour directed towards an opponent). The analysis indicates that agonistic behaviour is different both in its form and its regulation in interactions of different complexity. Male bimaturism and reproductive success in Sumatran orang-utans   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Although orang-utans live solitary lives most of the time, theyhave a complex social structure and are characterized by extremesexual dimorphism. However, whereas some adult male orang-utansdevelop full secondary sexual characteristics, such as cheekflanges, others may stay in an "arrested" unflanged conditionfor up to 20 years after reaching sexual maturity. The resultis a marked bimaturism among adult males. Flanged males allowfemales to overlap with their home range and often toleratethe presence of unflanged males. However, wherever possibleflanged males actively prevent unflanged males from copulatingwith females. Two competing hypotheses, previously untested, have been advanced to explain male reproductive behavior andbimaturism in orang-utans: (1) the "range-guardian" hypothesis, which asserts that the flanged males are postreproductive anddefend a range in which they tolerate sexually active, unflangedmale relatives; and (2) the "female choice" hypothesis, whichasserts that flanged males tolerate unflanged males in their range because they rely on female preference to favor flangedmales. We investigated these hypotheses and a third hypothesisthat the two male morphs represent co-existing alternativemale reproductive strategies ("sitting, calling, and waiting"for flanged males versus "going, searching, and finding" forunflanged males). Fecal samples were collected from a well-studiedpopulation in Indonesia, and eight human microsatellites wereanalyzed for 30 individuals that have been behaviorally monitoredfor up to 27 years. By carrying out paternity analysis on 11offspring born over 15 years, we found that unflanged malesfathered about half (6) of the offspring. Relatedness betweensuccessful unflanged males and resident dominant males wassignificantly lower than 0.5, and for some unflanged/flangedmale pairs, relatedness values were negative, indicating thatunflanged males are not offspring of the flanged males.  相似文献

The mevalonate/isoprenoids/cholesterol pathway has a fundamental role in the brain. Increasing age could be associated with specific changes in mevalonate downstream products. Other than age differences in brain cholesterol and dolichol levels, there has been little if any evidence on the short-chain isoprenoids farnesylpyrophosphate (FPP) and geranylgeranylpyrophosphate (GGPP), as well as downstream lipid products. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether brain levels of FPP, GGPP and sterol precursors and metabolites would be altered in aged mice (23?months) as compared to middle-aged mice (12?months) and young mice (3?months). FPP and GGPP levels were found to be significantly higher in brain homogenates of 23-months-old mice. The ratio of FPP to GGPP did not differ among the three age groups suggesting that increasing age does not alter the relative distribution of the two isoprenoids. Gene expression of FPP synthase and GGPP synthase did not differ among the three age groups. Gene expression of HMG-CoA reductase was significantly increased with age but in contrast gene expression of squalene synthase was reduced with increasing age. Levels of squalene, lanosterol and lathosterol did not differ among the three age groups. Desmosterol and 7-dehydroxycholesterol, which are direct precursors in the final step of cholesterol biosynthesis were significantly lower in brains of aged mice. Levels of cholesterol and its metabolites 24S- and 25S-hydroxycholesterol were similar in all three age groups. Our novel find ings on increased FPP and GGPP levels in brains of aged mice may impact on protein prenylation and contribute to neuronal dysfunction observed in aging and certain neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

Food Competition Between Wild Orangutans in Large Fig Trees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Orangutans are usually solitary. However, occasionally aggregations are formed, especially in large fruiting fig trees. Individuals in these aggregations may experience scramble or contest competition for food. We investigated the type and strength of food competition in large figs among wild Sumatran orangutans. Adult males foraged more efficiently than adult females and subadult males did. The availability of ripe fruit is positively related to the number of orangutans visiting a fig tree and their foraging efficiency. The number of orangutans in a fig tree did not affect patch residence time and foraging behavior, though orangutans spent more time feeding when aggregation size increased in a fig tree. Dominance relationships could be measured in a number of dyads. Differences in dominance did not affect foraging behavior. The patch residence time of subordinate individuals was reduced on days that a dominant individual also visited the fig. In conclusion, orangutans seem to adjust aggregation size to the number of available ripe fruits in a fig tree in such a way that scramble competition was absent. Contest competition determined access to large fig trees.  相似文献
