The scrotal myocutaneous flap

The scrotum is a thermoregulatory, well-vascularized structure formed by skin and nonstriated muscle with unique elastic properties. This makes it an ideal source of tissue coverage for problem wounds in its vicinity. Two patients in which scrotal musculocutaneous flaps were used are reported: one, a paraplegic, with a recurrent ischioperineal decubitus ulcer, and another with an ulcer of the penis with exposed Dacron graft previously placed to treat Peyronie's disease. After reviewing the anatomy of the scrotum and the existent literature, we studied scrotal vascularity in a fresh specimen by transillumination. Based on our experience, we conclude that this flap is easy to perform, reliable, and very useful for wounds around the perineal region.     

Indignant suicide in the Pacific: an example from the Toraja highlands of Indonesia

This paper describes and analyzes a type of Toraja (South Sulawesi, Indonesia) suicide in which a person kills him or herself after having been slighted or offended, usually by a close family member. Comparing and contrasting such suicides to similar types found elsewhere in Austronesia-speaking Oceania, the paper argues that self-inflicted deaths of this nature are not so much anomic, as suggested by some analysts, as indignant; they are committed by persons who feel that they have been severely mistreated or abused according to traditional notions of reciprocity, mutual aid, and the dangers of frustrated desire. The paper concludes by suggesting that Durkheim may have underestimated the frequency and importance of indignant suicide in traditional societies and that, conversely, contemporary analysts may be underestimating the importance of traditional norms and values in accounting for the high rates of suicide found in many parts of the Pacific today.     

Provision of nestboxes raises the breeding density of Great Tits Parus major equally in coniferous and deciduous woodland

Nestbox provision is a technique used to increase nest-site availability for secondary cavity-nesting birds. However, little is known about the demographic consequences of nestbox provision in different habitat types. To assess how nestbox provision affects the density of hole-nesting birds simultaneously in two contrasting habitats, we compared the breeding density of Great Tits along transects without nestboxes with that in transects where nestboxes were provided. Although the initial density of breeders was considerably higher in the deciduous habitat than in the coniferous habitat, provision of nestboxes increased density by a similar number of additional pairs in each habitat type. Thus, the provision of nestboxes in managed coniferous forests may be as effective in increasing the breeding opportunities of cavity nesters as in deciduous stands. Moreover, previous research showed that pairs in deciduous habitat with nestboxes have consistently lower breeding success than those in coniferous habitat with nestboxes. It is possible that the addition of nestboxes in the preferred habitat increased density to such an extent that density-dependent effects became apparent.     

Constructivist Models of Mind, Contemporary Psychoanalysis, and the Development of Culture Theory

Researchers in a number of fields, including contemporary psychoanalysis, are contributing to the development of a dynamic model of mind that acknowledges the contributions of biology and social experience to the construction of human consciousness and subjectivity. In this paper, I examine this emerging model of mind and I discuss its implications for the development of Culture theory. I argue that theories of culture must reflect the fluidity and complexity of the psychological states that underlie the culture process, and I suggest that even highly conventional models of action, thought, and feeling are rarely, if ever, internalized, appropriated, or reproduced without some degree of modification, refashioning, and personalization. I propose person-centered ethnography as one of the methods by which we can explore the complex relations among culture, mind, and behavior, [constructivist models of mind, contemporary psychoanalysis, culture theory, self and subjectivity, person-centered ethnography]     

The immunology of the infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus

In this work the data contained in the literature and obtained by the author are presented. These data may change the traditional concepts of the immunopathology of AIDS. The analysis of these data indicates that the explanation of disturbances in the immune system, attributing their cause to the cytocidal action of HIV, is simplified. HIV may infect cells containing no antigen CD4. Perhaps, the fusion of gp41 with the membrane of the target cells is necessary for the penetration of HIV into the cells. Macrophages serve as the main reservoir of HIV and may carry the virus to different organs. The prolonged latent period may be ascribed to cytotoxic lymphocytes specifically active against HIV and suppressing its replication. The progress of the disease is due to viral and cellular factors and depends on the functional changes in T-cells, B-cells, macrophages, the formation of immune complexes, the presence of stimulating antibodies and autoimmune phenomena.     

Oxidation and denaturation of hemoglobin encapsulated in liposomes

A study was made of the in vitro stability of hemoglobin-containing liposomes (‘hemosomes’) prepared from phosphatidylcholines, equimolar cholesterol and red cell lysate by the hand-shaking and ether-injection methods. Absorption spectra indicated hemichrome formation in ‘hemosomes’ prepared by the ether-injection technique, and increased oxidation of hemoglobin in hand-shaken ‘hemosomes’. The denaturation of hemoglobin in ether-injection ‘hemosomes’ was increased if the initial methemoglobin content of the hemolysate, or the temperature of preparation was elevated. It was slower if liposomes were prepared under either N₂ or CO, or if the radical scavenger 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran was added with the ether. Egg phosphatidylcholine and synthetic saturated phospholipids gave the same results. With hand-shaken ‘hemosomes’ the oxidized product was primarily methemoglobin, and oxidation could be inhibited by using saturated phosphatidylcholines instead of egg phosphatidylcholine. Lysophosphatidylcholine levels were higher and arachidonic acid levels lower in egg phosphatidylcholine ‘hemosomes’ than in equivalent liposomes containing no hemolysate. The ‘hemosome’ seems to be a suitable model for the study of hemoglobin-lipid membrane interactions and the resulting hemoglobin denaturation process.
