The response of the late second-instar male nymphs of the mealybug species (Hemiptera, Pseudococcidae), Planococcus citri (Risso), Planococcus ficus (Signoret), Pseudococcus cryptus Hempel Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead), to their conspecific and heterospecific female pheromone was studied. Males that exhibited the typical appearance of late-second-instar nymphs were tested. The male behavior was monitored soon after their exposure to the tested female sex pheromone in glass Petri dish arenas. Male nymph behavior toward the pheromone source was characterized based on their aggregation on the disks in the arena. Males of all four tested mealybug species were attracted to their conspecific female pheromone. By contrast, almost no interceptions of male nymphs with disks impregnated with a heterospecific female pheromone were observed. The mode of attraction of each of male nymphs of P. ficus, among most of the tested individuals (>80%), to the conspecific female sex pheromone, (S)-lavandulyl senecioate and or (S)-lavandulyl isovalerate, was the same as the mode of attraction latter on as adult. We suggest that by being attracted to the conspecific pheromone these males may direct themselves to a suitable pupation site near conspecific non-sibling mature females, thus preventing inbreeding. The repellency of heterospecific sex pheromone to males that are looking for a pupation site suggests that the latter try to avoid close contact with heterospecific females. 相似文献

Omapatrilat inhibits both angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and neutral endopeptidase (NEP). ACE inhibitors have been shown to inhibit atherosclerosis in apoE-deficient mice and in several other animal models but failed in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor– deficient mice despite effective inhibition of the reninangiotensin- aldosterone system. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of omapatrilat on atherogenesis in diabetic and nondiabetic LDL receptor–deficient mice. LDL receptor–deficient male mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 11 each). Diabetes was induced in 2 groups by low-dose STZ, the other 2 groups served as nondiabetic controls. Omapatrilat (70 mg/kg/day) was administered to one of the diabetic and to one of the nondiabetic groups. The diabetic and the nondiabetic mice were sacrificed after 3 and 5 weeks, respectively. The aortae were examined and the atherosclerotic plaque area was measured. The atherosclerotic plaque area was significantly smaller in the omapatrilat-treated mice, both diabetic and nondiabetic, as compared to nontreated controls. The mean plaque area of omapatrilattreated nondiabetic mice was 9357 ± 7293 μm2, versus 71977 ± 34610 μm2 in the nontreated mice (P = .002). In the diabetic animals, the plaque area was 8887 ± 5386 μm2 and 23220 ± 10400 μm2, respectively for treated and nontreated mice (P = .001). Plasma lipids were increased by omapatrilat: Meanplasma cholesterol in treated mice, diabetic and nondiabetic combined, was 39.31 ± 6.00 mmol/L, versus 33.12 ± 7.64 mmol/L in the nontreated animals (P = .008). The corresponding combined mean values of triglycerides were 4.83 ± 1.93 versus 3.00 ± 1.26 mmol/L (P = .02). Omapatrilat treatment did not affect weight or plasma glucose levels. Treatment with omapatrilat inhibits atherogenesis in diabetic as well as nondiabetic LDL receptor–deficient mice despite an increase in plasma lipids, suggesting a direct effect on the arterial wall. 相似文献

Several species of the alga Dunaliella contain high levels of β-carotene. Low dietary β-carotene intake is associated with type 2 diabetes. Dunaliella contains high levels of all-trans and 9-cis isomers of β-carotene and is the best known naturally occurring nutritional source of 9-cis β-carotene. Since vitamin A has been suggested to play a role in glucose and lipid metabolism, we aimed to study the effect of Dunaliella supplementation on diabetes in mice. Ten diabetic db/db mice were fed chow diet fortified with 8 % 9-cis-rich Dunaliella powder. Ten db/db and heterozygous db/+ mice each served as controls and were fed chow diet alone. The control db/db mice developed severe hyperglycemia with fasting glucose levels reaching 400 mg dL?1. Dunaliella significantly inhibited the elevation of plasma glucose (p?=?0.007). The area under the curve of the glucose tolerance test was 24 % lower in Dunaliella-treated mice than in the control db/db mice. Triglyceride elevation was significantly lower in the Dunaliella group than in the db/db group (p?=?0.007). The mRNA levels of several pro-inflammatory genes in adipose tissue, including monocyte chemotactic protein-1, intercellular adhesion molecule, vascular adhesion molecule-1, receptor-associated protein factor 6, and p-selectin, were elevated in the db/db group as compared to the db/+, whereas their levels were significantly lower in the Dunaliella-treated group. These results suggest that 9-cis β-carotene-rich Dunaliella may inhibit diabetes in db/db mice by reducing inflammation in adipose tissue. Background
Cellular senescence plays important roles in the aging process of complex organisms, in tumor suppression and in response to stress. Several markers can be used to identify senescent cells, of which the most widely used is the senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SABG) activity. The main advantage of SABG activity over other markers is the simplicity of the detection assay and the capacity to identify in situ a senescent cell in a heterogeneous cell population. Several approaches have been introduced to render the SABG assay quantitative. However none of these approaches to date has proven particularly amenable to quantitative analysis of SABG activity in situ. Furthermore the role of cellular senescence (CS) in vivo remains unclear mainly due to the ambiguity of current cellular markers in identifying CS of individual cells in tissues. 相似文献7.

Magnesium (Mg) modulates blood lipid levels, atherogenesis, and atherosclerosis in rabbits, when supplemented to diet. We have recently reported that a high concentration (50 g/L) of Mg sulfate fortification of drinking water attenuates atherogenesis in male and female LDL-receptor-deficient mice fed a high-cholesterol diet. The aims of the current study were to examine whether lower concentrations and another Mg salt could also have such an antiatherogenic effect. Thirty male LDL-receptor-deficient mice were divided into three groups (n=10 in each group). The mice received either distilled water or water fortified with 0.83 g or with 8.3 g Mg-chloride per liter. In the first (27 wk) and second (5 wk) stages of the experiment, the mice received normal chow and Western-type diet, respectively. Blood was drawn for determination of plasma Mg, calcium, and lipid levels. The extent of atherosclerotic lesions was determined at the aortic sinus. Magnesium-chloride fortification of drinking water did not result in higher plasma Mg concentrations, whereas a trend toward lower plasma calcium concentrations did not reach statistical significance. Even though plasma lipid levels were similar at the beginning and the end of the study, there were decreased plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the Mg groups after stage I. The atherosclerosis extent at the aortic sinus was significantly decreased in the 8.3-g Mg-chloride/L group (23,437 +/- 10,083 micron2) compared with the control group (65,937 +/- 31,761 microm2). There was also a trend toward lower atherosclerosis extent at the aortic sinus in the 0.83-g Mg-chloride/L group. An additional Mg salt (Mg-chloride) fortification of drinking water is capable of inhibiting atherogenesis in male LDL-receptor-deficient mice.
