The present paper relates the reciprocal interaction model for sleep cycle oscillation (McCarley and Hobson, ref. 29) to an attentional model of hippocampal function (Schmajuk and Moore, ref. 44). We consider mechanisms by which the interaction between gigantocellular tegmental field (FTG) cells and locus coeruleus (LC) activity proposed by the sleep cycle model may differentially modulate the information processing carried out in the hippocampus as described by the attentional model. Our fundamental assumption is that learning about the relevancy of different stimuli is proportional to the level of LC activation. If the environment becomes unpredictable during waking, the FTG and LC are activated and the LC facilitates hippocampal learning about stimulus relevancy. In a predictable situation during waking, FTG cells discharge rarely because no novelty is detected, and LC neurons are moderately active. If the predictable situation lasts, LC cells also decrease their activity, and a sleep period might start. At sleep onset, LC inhibition decreases and FTG activity is low leading to slow sleep. As FTG activity increases and LC activity reaches its low point, REM sleep starts. Because LC activity is low during REM sleep, values of stimulus relevancy remain unchanged. Since during sleep the threshold for external stimuli is high, only internally generated novel stimuli (subjectively perceived as dream mentation) may activate the LC. LC renewed inhibitory influence on the FTG ends REM sleep.  相似文献

Anaerobic digesters contain a wide variety of anaerobic cellulolytic bacteria. Many of these are sporing rods. Some isolates from a mesophilic cattle waste anaerobic digester were classified as Sporolactobacillus spp. A further group of bacteria could not be induced to sporulate. In some respects they resembled Eubacterium , but considering all the properties it is suggested that they should be classified as a species of Clostridium.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to test the hypothesis that acclimation of the unicellular marine alga, Thalassiosira fluviatilis Hustedt, to short photoperiods results in decreased cellular concentrations of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and decreased rates of light-saturated CO2 uptake. Cells were acclimated to photoperiods of 6:18, 12:12, and 18:6 h:h light:dark, and concentrations of the large subunit of the enzyme and responses of CO2 uptake to varying irradiance were measured. Concentrations of the large subunit, which weighed approximately 50 kilodaltons, were conserved while rates of CO2 uptake under light saturation and limitation, and cellular contents of chlorophyll a increased as photoperiod decreased. Apparently, these cells acclimate to short photoperiods by increasing rates of CO2 uptake under saturating irradiances by increasing in vivo activation of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. Also, chlorophyll-specific concentrations and specific activities of the enzyme appear to be lower and higher, respectively, in diatomaceous algae than in higher plants.  相似文献

Blastocysts (1-14) were transferred unilaterally into 63 pseudopregnant mice which were killed on Day 17. Plasma progesterone concentrations were significantly (P less than 0.05) lower in animals with one fetus than in those with 2-5 or 9-14 fetuses. Plasma testosterone concentrations were correlated with fetal number in mice with 1-13 fetuses (P less than 0.001). The total placental content of chorionic gonadotrophin in 13 litters varied directly with the number in the litter (1-6), and was 1.67 +/- 0.15 ng/placenta. The number of corpora lutea per mouse was negatively correlated with mean CL volume per mouse (P less than 0.001), and the number of conceptuses was positively correlated with mean CL volume per mouse (P less than 0.001). The effect of conceptuses on the ovary was systemic. The relationship between plasma testosterone concentration and conceptus number may be due to gonadotrophins acting on the ovary, or androgens produced by the placenta or fetus.  相似文献

A farmer''s wife who had helped with lambing aborted spontaneously in March after a short febrile illness in the 28th week of her pregnancy. She developed disseminated intravascular coagulation post partum with acute renal failure and pulmonary oedema. Recovery was complete after two weeks of hospital care. A strain of Chlamydia psittaci, probably of ovine origin, was isolated from the placenta and fetus. The patient''s serum showed rising titres of antibody against chlamydia group antigen; the placental and fetal isolates; and a known ovine abortion, but not a known avian, strain of C psittaci. IgG against both ovine abortion and enteric strains of C psittaci was detected, but IgM against only an abortion strain was detected. Histological examination showed pronounced intervillus placentitis with chlamydial inclusions in the trophoblast but no evidence of fetal infection or amnionitis. Laboratory evidence of chlamydial infection was found in an aborting ewe on the farm in January and in remaining sheep and lambs in July. Doctors should recognise the possible risk to pregnant women in rural areas where chlamydial infections in farm animals are widespread.  相似文献

The nitrogen content of cell wall preparations from normal tomato (cv Ailsa Craig) fruit remained constant during ripening, whereas salt-soluble protein increased throughout this process. Tomato polygalacturonase released about twice as much protein from the preparations as salts did, with a maximum at the orange stage of development. Polygalacturonase-solubilized protein from the tomato mutant `ripening inhibitor' (rin) was less, and that from the mutant `Never ripe' (Nr) cell walls was more than that from normal wall preparations. Release of protein by fungal cellulase was limited, but was increased by the addition of polygalacturonase from the same source. Salt-solubilized protein contained a range of enzymic activities but these were distributed between fewer multimolecular forms than is the case for whole cell preparations. The results suggest that metabolically active protein, removable by strong salt solutions, cellulase, or polygalacturonase, remains attached to the cell walls of tomato fruit until late in ripening. The unusual amounts of protein attached to the cell walls of mutant fruit appear to be a reflection of the absence of some or all of the isoenzymes of polygalacturonase that are associated with normal ripening.  相似文献

Mitochondria isolated from preclimacteric avocado fruit oxidize pyruvate at a much lower rate than those separated from climacteric fruit. The external addition of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) increased the rate of pyruvate oxidation in both cases.The study of the influence of TPP on the rate of oxidation of malate by mitochondria obtained from both preclimacteric and climacteric fruit indicated that the effect of this cofactor could be understood by assuming that malate was converted to pyruvate. TPP stimulation of malate oxidation was prevented by arsenite, an inhibitor of keto acid oxidation. The addition of glutamate increased the rate of malate oxidation through the transamination of oxaloacetate. This suggests that the rate of oxidation of malate is highly dependent upon mechanisms which remove oxaloacetate efficiently.Incubation of mitochondria from preclimacteric fruit with malate-U-(14)C resulted in the labeling of oxaloacetate and the accumulation of labeled pyruvate. Addition of TPP to this system induced the rapid formation of citrate. This conversion was completely inhibited by arsenite.The results indicate that the ability to carry out the oxidative decarboxylation of alpha-ketoacids improves as the ripening process progresses. The idea was advanced that TPP available to the mitochondria plays an important controlling role.  相似文献
