Little is known about positive interactions among members of herbaceous plant communities initiating secondary succession (i.e., ruderal communities). Here, we explored the possibility that Euphorbia schickendantzii (Euphorbia), a latex-containing herb, facilitates other ruderals by protecting them from herbivores in recently plowed and overgrazed sites in central Argentina. To test this hypothesis, we compared plant number, height, reproductive output, and herbivore damage for four species when associated with Euphorbia versus in adjacent open zones without Euphorbia. Additionally, we classified species in the community according to their palatability, and compared community composition, richness, and diversity between Euphorbia and open zones. Dominant (66 % relative abundance) and highly palatable species exhibited increased plant number, size, and fecundity, and decreased herbivory when associated with Euphorbia relative to non-Euphorbia zones. In contrast, a physically and chemically well-defended species showed greater number of individuals in the open and no differences in herbivory between sampling zones. In detrended correspondence analysis, ordination scores of most palatable species were closer to Euphorbia, while those of most unpalatable species were closer to the open. Community composition differed between areas, with six species (25 % of the community) occurring exclusively with Euphorbia and three other species occurring only in open zones. Additionally, richness and diversity were greater in communities associated with Euphorbia than in those associated with non-Euphorbia zones. These results support our hypothesis, highlight the importance of facilitation in altering community-level responses, and indicate that positive interactions can play a more significant role in organizing terrestrial ruderal communities than previously recognized. 相似文献

Males in several avian groups carry specialised materials as part of their courtship display. Females may vary their investment in reproduction in relation to their mates' attractiveness. The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) population on Dassen Island, South Africa, builds domed nests in the branches of trees. These nests are more or less spherical structures with a deep cup lined largely with feathers. When males collect feathers, they call to females and display the feather before it is added to the nest. We examined whether carrying feathers provides females with an index of male quality, which correlates with their subsequent investment in parental care. Additionally, we studied the potential importance of feathers in nest insulation. Feathers were collected mainly by males. Males also brought larger feathers, and deposited more feathers in nests, than females. Number of trips with feathers – which increased after feathers were experimentally removed from nests – and number of feathers brought varied among males. Volume of feathers influenced females' investment in reproduction and positively correlated with clutch size and chick feeding rates. We found more feathers during incubation and immediately after chicks hatched, when nest heat requirements peak. Furthermore, number of trips with feathers and number and size of feathers were greater during incubation. Our results suggest that this feather‐carrying behaviour by male house sparrows influences maternal reproduction investment and could be a kind of parental care per se by supplementing nest insulation. 相似文献

Electrostatic interactions at the C-terminal domain of nucleoplasmin modulate its chromatin decondensation activity 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The chromatin decondensation activity, thermal stability, and secondary structure of recombinant nucleoplasmin, of two deletion mutants, and of the protein isolated from Xenopus oocytes have been characterized. As previously reported, the chromatin decondensation activity of recombinant, unphosphorylated nucleoplasmin is almost negligible. Our data show that deletion of 50 residues at the C-terminal domain of the protein, containing the positively charged nuclear localization sequence, activates its chromatin decondensation ability and decreases its stability. Interestingly, both the decondensation activity and thermal stability of this deletion mutant resemble those of the phosphorylated protein isolated from Xenopus oocytes. Deletion of 80 residues at the C-terminal domain, containing the above-mentioned positively charged region and a poly(Glu) tract, inactivates the protein and increases its thermal stability. These findings, along with the effect of salt on the thermal stability of these proteins, suggest that electrostatic interactions between the positive nuclear localization sequence and the poly(Glu) tract, at the C-terminal domain, modulate protein activity and stability. 相似文献

Objectives
To evaluate the advantages of cytology and PCR of high-risk human papilloma virus (PCR HR-HPV) infection in biopsy-derived diagnosis of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL = AIN2/AIN3) in HIV-positive men having sex with men (MSM).Methods
This is a single-centered study conducted between May 2010 and May 2014 in patients (n = 201, mean age 37 years) recruited from our outpatient clinic. Samples of anal canal mucosa were taken into liquid medium for PCR HPV analysis and for cytology. Anoscopy was performed for histology evaluation. Results
Anoscopy showed 33.8% were normal, 47.8% low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), and 18.4% HSIL; 80.2% had HR-HPV. PCR of HR-HPV had greater sensitivity than did cytology (88.8% vs. 75.7%) in HSIL screening, with similar positive (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of 20.3 vs. 22.9 and 89.7 vs. 88.1, respectively. Combining both tests increased the sensitivity and NPV of HSIL diagnosis to 100%. Correlation of cytology vs. histology was, generally, very low and PCR of HR-HPV vs. histology was non-existent (<0.2) or low (<0.4). Area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) curve analysis of cytology and PCR HR-HPV for the diagnosis of HSIL was poor (<0.6). Multivariate regression analysis showed protective factors against HSIL were: viral suppression (OR: 0.312; 95%CI: 0.099-0.984), and/or syphilis infection (OR: 0.193; 95%CI: 0.045-0.827). HSIL risk was associated with HPV-68 genotype (OR: 20.1; 95%CI: 2.04-197.82).Conclusions
When cytology and PCR HR-HPV findings are normal, the diagnosis of pre-malignant HSIL can be reliably ruled-out in HIV-positive patients. HPV suppression with treatment protects against the appearance of HSIL. 相似文献7.

Titanocene dichloride [Ti(η5-C5H5)2Cl2] (1), has been grafted onto dehydrated hydroxyapatite (HAP), Al2O3 and two mesoporous silicas MSU-2 (Michigan State University Silica type 2) and HMS (Hexagonal Mesoporous Silica), to give the novel materials HAP/[Ti(η5-C5H5)2Cl2] (S1) (1.01 wt.% Ti), Al2O3/[Ti(η5-C5H5)2Cl2] (S2) (2.36 wt.% Ti), HMS/[Ti(η5-C5H5)2Cl2] (S3) (0.75 wt.% Ti) and MSU-2/[Ti(η5-C5H5)2Cl2] (S4) (0.74 wt.% Ti), which have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, nitrogen gas sorption, multinuclear magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, UV spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy. The cytotoxicity of the titanocene-functionalized materials toward human cancer cell lines from five different histogenic origins: 8505 C (anaplastic thyroid cancer), A253 (head and neck cancer), A549 (lung carcinoma), A2780 (ovarian cancer) and DLD-1 (colon cancer) has been determined. M50 values (quantity of material needed to inhibit normal cell growth by 50%) and Ti-M50 values (quantity of anchored titanium needed to inhibit normal cell growth by 50%) indicate that the activity of S1-S4 against studied human cancer cells depended on the surface type as well as on the cell line. In addition, studies on the titanocene release and the interaction of the materials S1-S4 with DNA show that the cytotoxic activity may be due to particle action, because no release of titanium complexes has been observed in physiological conditions, while electrostatic interactions of titanocene-functionalized particles with DNA have been observed. 相似文献

The global expansion of species beyond their ancestral ranges can derive from mechanisms that are trait-based (e.g., post-establishment evolved differences compared to home populations) or circumstantial (e.g., propagule pressure, with no trait-based differences). These mechanisms can be difficult to distinguish following establishment, but each makes unique predictions regarding trait similarity between ancestral (‘home’) and introduced (‘away’) populations. Here, we tested for trait-based population differences across four continents for the globally distributed grass Dactylis glomerata, to assess the possible role of trait evolution in its worldwide expansion. We used a common-environment glasshouse experiment to quantify trait differences among home and away populations, and the potential relevance of these differences for competitive interactions. Few significant trait differences were found among continents, suggesting minimal change during global expansion. All populations were polyploids, with similar foliar carbon:nitrogen ratios (a proxy for defense), chlorophyll content, and biomass. Emergence time and growth rate favored home populations, resulting in their competitive superiority over away populations. Small but significant trait differences among away populations suggest different introductory histories or local adaptive responses following establishment. In summary, the worldwide distribution of this species appears to have arisen from its pre-adapted traits promoting growth, and its repeated introduction with cultivation and intense propagule pressure. Global expansion can thus occur without substantial shifts in growth, reproduction, or defense. Rather than focusing strictly on the invader, invasion success may also derive from the traits found (or lacking) in the recipient community and from environmental context including human disturbance. 相似文献
