The nutrient characteristics of aquatic environments at Hope Bay (Antarctica) depend on different factors, penguin enrichment being one of the most important. In this study we surveyed three water bodies of different morphometry and trophic status: Esperanza Lake (oligotrophic), Boeckella Lake (meso-eutrophic), and Pingüi Pond (hypereutrophic). This research provides a preliminary characterization of the periphyton colonization on artificial substrata (glass slides) of these water bodies from the end of January to mid-March 2000. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the algae, chlorophyll a, dry weight, ash-free dry weight, and physical and chemical variables of the lakes were assessed. The Autotrophic Index and the Lakatos system of classification were also applied. All three lakes differed clearly in all the variables considered. The periphyton from Esperanza Lake was first dominated by Bacillariophyceae and subsequently by the chrysophyce Phaeogloea mucosa. P. mucosa was the dominant species at Boeckella Lake and Chlamydomonas subcaudata was dominant at Pingüi Pond. Highest mean maximum density values were reached at Pingüi Pond, followed by Boeckella and Esperanza Lakes. Highest biomass figures were registered with increasing trophic status. According to the Lakatos index, the periphyton of Esperanza Lake was the least developed and it was mainly organic and heterotrophic; Boeckella Lake showed intermediate development in periphyton mass, which was autotrophic and mainly inorganic whereas Pingüi Pond showed the highest development in periphytic mass, and it was mainly autotrophic.  相似文献

The genus Ctenomys includes a high number of taxa, with at least ten species from Patagonia and three recently described species for northeastern Chubut Province (Argentina). Ctenomys sociabilis is a social species of the genus Ctenomys and is currently distributed in the surrounding area of Sierra Cuyin Manzano (Neuquén Province), with a recently extinct population that occurred in Laguna Nahuelquir (Cushamen, Chubut Province). Molecular analyses have placed C. sociabilis at the base of Ctenomys clade, as the sister species to all other Ctenomys. Based on a morphological assessment (qualitative and quantitative) and DNA sequencing, we describe a new species of Ctenomys from Esquel, Chubut Province. Phylogenetic analysis shows the new species to be closely related to C. sociabilis, with evidence of solitary behavior. This new species is the first reported to be closely related phylogenetically to Ctenomys sociabilis at the base of the Ctenomys phylogeny. We provide anatomical comparisons between the new species and other species of Ctenomys from Patagonia, especially C. sociabilis.

Pontoporia blainvillei (Gervais & d’Orbigny, 1844), the franciscana dolphin, is the most endangered small cetacean in the Western South Atlantic. It is an endemic species with a coastal and estuarine distribution that has been divided into four Franciscana Management Areas (FMAs). We used the mitochondrial DNA control region to conduct a phylogeographic analysis to evaluate the population structure of the franciscana and the influence of paleoceanographic events on its biogeographic history. We found nine populations along the entire distribution (ΦST?=?0.41, ΦCT?=?0.38, p?<?10–5), with estimated migration rates resulting in less than one female per generation. Populations from FMAIII and FMAIV in the south (including the Río de La Plata Estuary) showed higher long-term migration rates and effective population sizes than northern populations. The phylogeographic analysis supports the franciscana origin in the Río de La Plata Estuary, with further dispersal south and northwards. The first lineage split happened around 2.5 Ma, with lineage radiation throughout the Pleistocene until recent fragmentation events shaped current-day populations. We suggest that Pleistocene glaciations influenced the dispersion and population structure of the franciscana. Specifically, that the shift of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence drove the dispersion northwards. Then, low sea-level periods caused either the isolation in estuarine refugia or local extinctions, followed by re-colonizations.

1. The unique biochemical properties of Ca2+/calmodulin (CaM)-dependent protein kinase II have made this enzyme one of the paradigmatic models of the forever searched memory molecule.2. In particular, the central participation of CaMKII as a sensor of the Ca2+ signals generated by activation of NMDA receptors after the induction of long-term plastic changes, has encouraged the use of pharmacological, genetic, biochemical, and imaging tools to unveil the role of this kinase in the acquisition, consolidation, and expression of different types of memories.3. Here we review some of the more exciting discoveries related to the mechanisms involved in CaMKII activation and synaptic plasticity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect of chronic estrogen treatment on the inhibitory action of nitric oxide (NO) on prolactin release. METHODS: The effect of NO on prolactin release was studied in anterior pituitaries of female Wistar rats, intact at random stages, ovariectomized (OVX), and OVX treated for 15 days with 17beta-estradiol (OVX-E(2)). RESULTS: Sodium nitroprusside (NP, 0.5 mM), a NO donor, inhibited prolactin release from anterior pituitaries and was able to stimulate cGMP synthesis in intact and OVX rats. Only a high, supraphysiological concentration of NP (2 mM) inhibited prolactin release from anterior pituitaries of OVX-E(2) rats and increased cGMP synthesis in OVX-E(2) rats. 8-Br-cGMP, a cGMP analogue, decreased prolactin release from anterior pituitaries of OVX rats but did not affect it in OVX-E(2) rats. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that estrogen may modify the sensitivity of the anterior pituitary to the inhibitory effect of NO on prolactin release by affecting guanylyl cyclase activity and the cGMP pathway.  相似文献

Resilience is related to the ability of a system to adjust to disturbances. The Utilitarian Redundancy Model has emerged as a tool for investigating the resilience of local medical systems. The model determines the use of species richness for the same therapeutic function as a facilitator of the maintenance of these systems. However, predictions generated from this model have not yet been tested, and a lack of variables exists for deeper analyses of resilience. This study aims to address gaps in the Utilitarian Redundancy Model and to investigate the resilience of two medical systems in the Brazilian semi-arid zone. As a local illness is not always perceived in the same way that biomedicine recognizes, the term “therapeutic targets” is used for perceived illnesses. Semi-structured interviews with local experts were conducted using the free-listing technique to collect data on known medicinal plants, usage preferences, use of redundant species, characteristics of therapeutic targets, and the perceived severity for each target. Additionally, participatory workshops were conducted to determine the frequency of targets. The medical systems showed high species richness but low levels of species redundancy. However, if redundancy was present, it was the primary factor responsible for the maintenance of system functions. Species richness was positively associated with therapeutic target frequencies and negatively related to target severity. Moreover, information about redundant species seems to be largely idiosyncratic; this finding raises questions about the importance of redundancy for resilience. We stress the Utilitarian Redundancy Model as an interesting tool to be used in studies of resilience, but we emphasize that it must consider the distribution of redundancy in terms of the treatment of important illnesses and the sharing of information. This study has identified aspects of the higher and lower vulnerabilities of medical systems, adding variables that should be considered along with richness and redundancy.  相似文献

Aerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AerAOB) and anoxic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) cooperate in partial nitritation/anammox systems to remove ammonium from wastewater. In this process, large granular microbial aggregates enhance the performance, but little is known about granulation so far. In this study, three suspended-growth oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification-denitrification (OLAND) reactors with different inoculation and operation (mixing and aeration) conditions, designated reactors A, B, and C, were used. The test objectives were (i) to quantify the AerAOB and AnAOB abundance and the activity balance for the different aggregate sizes and (ii) to relate aggregate morphology, size distribution, and architecture putatively to the inoculation and operation of the three reactors. A nitrite accumulation rate ratio (NARR) was defined as the net aerobic nitrite production rate divided by the anoxic nitrite consumption rate. The smallest reactor A, B, and C aggregates were nitrite sources (NARR, >1.7). Large reactor A and C aggregates were granules capable of autonomous nitrogen removal (NARR, 0.6 to 1.1) with internal AnAOB zones surrounded by an AerAOB rim. Around 50% of the autotrophic space in these granules consisted of AerAOB- and AnAOB-specific extracellular polymeric substances. Large reactor B aggregates were thin film-like nitrite sinks (NARR, <0.5) in which AnAOB were not shielded by an AerAOB layer. Voids and channels occupied 13 to 17% of the anoxic zone of AnAOB-rich aggregates (reactors B and C). The hypothesized granulation pathways include granule replication by division and budding and are driven by growth and/or decay based on species-specific physiology and by hydrodynamic shear and mixing. In the last few years, autotrophic nitrogen removal via partial nitritation and anoxic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has evolved from lab- to full-scale treatment of nitrogenous wastewaters with a low biodegradable organic compound content, and this evolution has been driven mainly by a significant decrease in the operational costs compared to the costs of conventional nitrification and heterotrophic denitrification (11, 23). Oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification and denitrification (OLAND) is one of the autotrophic processes used and is a one-stage procedure; i.e., partial nitritation and anammox occur in the same reactor (30). The “functional” autotrophic microorganisms in OLAND include aerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AerAOB) and anoxic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB). With oxygen, AerAOB oxidize ammonium to nitrite (nitritation), and with the nitrite AnAOB oxidize the residual ammonium to form dinitrogen gas and some nitrate (anammox). Additional aerobic nitrite oxidation to nitrate (nitratation) by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) lowers the nitrogen removal efficiency, but it can, for instance, be prevented at low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels because the oxygen affinity of AerAOB is higher than that of NOB (16). Reactor configurations for the OLAND process can be based on suspended biomass growing in aggregates, like that in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) (37) or a gas lift or upflow reactor (32). For suspended-growth systems there are two important challenges: biomass retention and equilibrated microbial activities.High biomass retention efficiency is a prerequisite in anammox technologies because of the slow growth of AnAOB (33). In suspended biomass systems, settling properties determine the retention of biomass and are related to the microbial aggregate morphology (floc or granule) and size. Granules can be defined as compact and dense aggregates with an approximately spherical external appearance that do not coagulate under decreased hydrodynamic shear conditions and settle significantly faster than flocs (18). Toh and coworkers calculated a lower sludge volume index for aerobic granules than for aerobic flocs and also showed that there was an increase in the settling velocity with increasing granule size (35). Hence, in terms of physical properties, large granules are preferable for suspended-growth applications.OLAND aggregate size not only influences settling properties but also affects the proportion of microbial nitrite production and consumption; lower AerAOB activity and higher AnAOB activity were observed with larger aggregates (25, 37). Theoretically, a microbial aggregate with equal nitrite production and nitrite consumption can remove ammonium autonomously, because of its independence from other aggregates for acquisition and conversion of nitrite. Hence, with an increasing aggregate size and thus with a decreasing ratio of nitrite production to nitrite consumption, three functional categories of aggregates can be distinguished: nitrite sources, autonomous nitrogen removers, and nitrite sinks. Because minimal nitrite accumulation is one of the prerequisites for high nitrogen removal efficiency in OLAND reactors, the presence of excess small aggregates is undesirable (9, 37).Although large granular aggregates are desirable for biomass retention and activity balance, so far no formation mechanisms have been proposed for OLAND granules, in contrast to the well-studied anaerobic (13) and aerobic (1) granules. In order to determine general and environment-specific determinants for aggregate size and architecture, three suspended-growth OLAND reactors with different inoculation and operation (mixing and aeration) parameters were selected, and these reactors were designated reactors A, B, and C (Table (Table1).1). The first objective of this study was to gain more insight into the relationship between OLAND aggregate size, AerAOB and AnAOB abundance, and the activity balance. The second objective was to propose pathways for aggregation and granulation by relating (dis)similarities in aggregate size distribution, morphology, and architecture to differences in reactor inoculation and operation.

The aim of the present study was to examine the parasite fauna present in rodent coprolites collected from Cueva Huenul 1 (CH1), northern Neuquén (Patagonia, Argentina), an archaeological site that provides stratified sequences of archaeological and palaeontological remains dating from the Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene Transition to the Late Holocene period. Twenty rodent coprolites collected from different sedimentary units from the site, with ages ranging from 13.844 ± 75-1.416 ± 37 years BP, were examined for parasites. Each coprolite was processed as a whole: rehydrated, homogenised, spontaneously sedimented and examined using light microscopy. The coprolites and the eggs of any parasites present were described, measured and photographed. In all, 158 parasite eggs were found in 10 coprolites. The faeces were positive for Viscachataenia quadrata Denegri, Dopchiz, Elissondo & Beveridge and Monoecocestus sp. Beddard (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) and for Heteroxynema (Cavioxyura) viscaciae Sutton & Hugot (Nematoda: Oxyuridae). The coprolites examined were tentatively attributed to Lagidium viscacia Molina (Mammalia, Rodentia, Caviomorpha, Chinchillidae). The life cycles of these parasites are discussed.  相似文献

Seasonal primary productivities of periphyton and phytoplankton were compared in Grande Lake (GL) and a relict oxbow lake (ROL) in winter 2006 and summer 2007. GL was free of floating plants on the sampling dates and covered over 80 and 100% of the ROL surface in winter and summer, respectively. The 14C assimilation technique was used to obtain the PE curves of phytoplankton and periphyton on artificial substrata. The periphytic maximum photosynthetic rate (P max) was higher in the ROL in winter and summer, being better adapted to low irradiances than those in the GL. Phytoplankton and periphytic algae were light-limited in the ROL in summer due to complete coverage by floating macrophytes. In summer, P max and α values for periphyton in the ROL were higher than those for phytoplankton, and were even higher than in GL. In turn, P max and α values for phytoplankton in Grande Lake were higher than those for periphyton due to improved light conditions and the presence of algae that were adapted to movement through the water column. These results suggest that the complete coverage by floating macrophytes restricted phytoplankton productivity and allowed the development of a periphytic community that was better adapted to low-light conditions.  相似文献
