Introduction

The epidemiological transition has resulted in a major increase in the prevalence of obesity in North Africa. This study investigated differences in obesity and its association with area of residence, gender and socio-economic position among adults in Algeria and Tunisia, two countries with socio-economic and socio-cultural similarities.

Methods

Cross-sectional studies used stratified, three-level, clustered samples of 35–70 year old adults in Algeria, (women n = 2741, men n = 2004) and Tunisia (women n = 2964, men n = 2379). Thinness was defined as Body Mass Index (BMI) = weight/height <18.5 kg/m2, obesity as BMI ≥30, and abdominal obesity as waist circumference/height ≥0.6. Associations with area of residence, gender, age, education, profession and household welfare were assessed.

Results

Prevalence of thinness was very low except among men in Algeria (7.3% C.I.[5.9–8.7]). Prevalence of obesity among women was high in Algeria (30.1% C.I.[27.8–32.4]) and Tunisia (37.0% C.I.[34.4–39.6]). It was less so among men (9.1% C.I.[7.1–11.0] and 13.3% C.I.[11.2–15.4]).The results were similar for abdominal obesity. In both countries women were much more obesity-prone than men: the women versus men obesity Odds-Ratio was 4.3 C.I.[3.4–5.5] in Algeria and 3.8 C.I.[3.1–4.7] in Tunisia. Obesity was more prevalent in urban versus rural areas in Tunisia, but not in Algeria (e.g. for women, urban versus rural Odds-Ratio was 2.4 C.I.[1.9–3.1] in Tunisia and only 1.2 C.I.[1.0–5.5] in Algeria). Obesity increased with household welfare, but more markedly in Tunisia, especially among women. Nevertheless, in both countries, even in the lowest quintile of welfare, a fifth of the women were obese.

Conclusion

The prevention of obesity, especially in women, is a public health issue in both countries, but there were differences in the patterning of obesity according to area of residence and socio-economic position. These specificities must be taken into account in the management of obesity inequalities.  相似文献

This study is devoted to the analysis of the psammophyte of the coastal and semi-continental dunes in Tlemcen. Interesting results have been obtained, in particular, on the biological and ecological aspects of the psammophyte. The interpretation from Factoriel analysis of correspondences enabled us to identify the different phytosociological classes (Cakiletea maritimae, Ammophiletea, Quercetea ilicis, Therobrachypodietea and Stellarietea mediae). Some of these classes (Cakiletea maritimae and Ammophiletea) inhabit, exceedingly well, the embryonic dunes. Some species (Therobrachypodietea) colonize the quickset dunes. Lastly, some others (Quercetea ilicis) settle in the more mature and stable dunes. By using the phytosociological and phytodynamical data, we have been able to understand the vegetation and its diversity. To cite this article: H. Stambouli-Meziane et al., C. R. Chréa National Park, one of the 11 national parks in Algeria, is natural and diverse but under different pressures: urbanisation, fires caused by the high flux of visitors. Several ecological and systematic studies have been conducted on the Araneae, the most important epigeal fauna, but no attention was given to the anthropogenic parcels of the Park. To assess the effects of urbanisation and fires on the ecology of this fauna, spiders were collected monthly for 2 years, using ‘Pitfall’ traps in three disturbed stations: burned, urbanised and reforested and three natural sites as control. In total, 1,476 specimens were sampled (19 families, 42 genera and 68 species). Zodarion algericum was the dominant species (13.25%), particularly in the burned station. Mann–Whitney U test showed a significant difference between urbanised and nonurbanised sites in contrast to other ones and no significant differences with the control. Our results show that fires transform the forest into a mosaic of habitats, with open gaps of different stages of succession. In addition, the reforestation of cedars without any agricultural practices has no negative effects on the Park. No loss of biodiversity was observed; this would encourage the restoration of the forest to protect its fauna and flora.  相似文献

Stereotaxic surgery for the implantation of cannulae into specific brain regions has for many decades been a very successful experimental technique to investigate the effects of locally manipulated neurotransmitter and signaling pathways in awake, behaving animals. Moreover, the stereotaxic implantation of electrodes for electrophysiological stimulation and recording studies has been instrumental to our current understanding of neuroplasticity and brain networks in behaving animals. Ever-increasing knowledge about optimizing surgical techniques in rodents(1-4), public awareness concerning animal welfare issues and stringent legislation (e.g., the 2010 European Union Directive on the use of laboratory animals(5)) prompted us to refine these surgical procedures, particularly with respect to implementing new procedures for oxygen supplementation and the continuous monitoring of blood oxygenation and heart rate levels during the surgery as well as introducing a standardized protocol for post-surgical care. Our observations indicate that these modifications resulted in an increased survival rate and an improvement in the general condition of the animals after surgery (e.g. less weight loss and a more active animal). This video presentation will show the general procedures involved in this type of stereotaxic surgery with special attention to our several modifications. We will illustrate these surgical procedures in rats, but it is also possible to perform this type of surgery in mice or other small laboratory animals by using special adaptors for the stereotaxic apparatus(6).  相似文献

Cardiac vessel density (beta-actin immunolabeling) and angiogenic capacity of coronary artery explants (culture in collagen gel) was determined in hypertrophied heart obtained by exercise training (10 wk) or ANG II infusion for 10 days. A group of rats received ANG II the last 10 days of training. The heart weight index was similarly elevated after exercise, and ANG II-hypertension compared with controls (3.16 +/- 0.09 and 3.11 +/- 0.11 vs. 2.68 +/- 0.08 mg/g, respectively), whereas tail cuff pressure (TCP) increased only in sedentary rats infused with ANG II. Vessel density was increased by 36% in trained rats and reduced by 30% in ANG II-infused rats. The number of sprouts generated by coronary rings was reduced by 50% in ANG II-infused rats and increased by 50% in exercise trained rats compared with controls (35 +/- 4 and 113 +/- 5 vs. 71 +/- 1 sprouts per ring, respectively). Exercise-training partly prevented the hypertensive effect of ANG II (TCP of 141 +/- 5 mmHg), whereas heart weight index (3.66 +/- 0.06 mg/g body wt) was not lowered. Myocardial vessel density was normalized, and sprouting from coronary rings increased by 50% in trained rats infused with ANG II compared with sedentary normotensive rats. Cardiac VEGF (Western blot analysis) was higher in hypertensive rats and not affected by exercise. Facing a similar increase in cardiac mass, intense training, but not ANG II hypertension, is accompanied by an increase in vascular density of the heart. The effect of training is unlikely related to changes in resting VEGF and may represent enhanced angiogenic capacity of the coronary vascular bed.  相似文献

This study was aimed to evaluate the oxidant–antioxidant imbalance in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Tunisians. We assessed 16 parameters related to the oxidative status that include malondialdehyde (MDA), total protein carbonyls (PCs), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP). We also examined the activity of glutathione peroxydase (GSH-Px), catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the plasma and erythrocytes. Levels of total thiols, reduced glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant status (TAS), hydrogen peroxide, ascorbic acid, iron, and protein sulfhydryls were determined using spectrophotometry. We also evaluated the level of nitric oxide (NO) and peroxynitrite in plasma from COPD patients and healthy controls. Estimation of DNA damage was determined using the comet assay. Pulmonary functional tests were performed by body plethysmography. Levels of MDA, PC, DNA damage, and AOPP were significantly increased while total thiols, GSH, and TAS were decreased in COPD patients. GSH-Px activity was higher in COPD patients while no difference was found for catalase and SOD. We also observed a lower level of NO and peroxynitrite in COPD patients. Decreased levels of peroxynitrite were found to correlate with disease progression, as well as with forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity among COPD patients. Multivariate analysis revealed that NO is associated with pathological pathways that help to predict patient outcome independently of the degree of airflow obstruction. These results indicate the presence of a systemic oxidative stress and highlight the importance of NO and peroxynitrite as major effectors in COPD development and airflow obstruction.  相似文献

In order to improve the yield of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PPD) in Clostridium butyricum E5, we carried out cofermentation experiments on glucose/glycerol mixtures in chemostat culture. The results showed the influence of the ratio of the two carbon substrates on the production of the required diol. The progressive increase of glucose in culture medium containing a given concentration of glycerol made it possible to highlight the deviation of carbon flow from the oxidative towards the reducing pathway, in order to maintain the oxidation/reduction balance in the cell. The conversion of glycerol into 1,3-PPD thus increased from 0.63 mol mol(-1), without the addition of glucose, to a maximum of 0.89 mol mol(-1) for a molar glucose/glycerol ratio of 0.2 for the wild-type strain. The same experiments carried out with the mutant MD strain, which is resistant to allyl alcohol, led to similar results but with a maximum of 0.84 mol mol(-1) for a glucose/glycerol molar ratio of 0.1. Beyond a molar ratio of 0.2, the biosynthesis of enzymes for the glycerol metabolism was less subject to catabolic repression by glucose in the mutant MD strain than in the wild-type strain.  相似文献

Summary The naturally occurring heptapeptide deltorphin I (Tyr-d-Ala-Phe-Asp-Val-Val-Gly-NH2) exhibits extremely high affinity and selectivity for the opioid receptor. In an ongoing investigation of the features of this compound that confer these properties, seven new analogs of the peptide, in which phenylalanine at position three was replaced with amino acids containing alkyl side chains, were synthesized and tested for binding to , , and opioid receptors. These substitutions, including tert-leucine, tert-butylalanine, -aminobutyric acid, norvaline, norleucine, -cyclopentylalanine and octahydroindole-2-carboxylic acid, assessed the importance of aromaticity and lipophilicity/steric distribution of the side chain at this position in the binding interaction. Findings indicated that: (i) aromaticity at position three is not required for binding, and (ii) hydrophobic character, size, steric distribution and conformational flexibility influence affinity at the receptor. The data suggest that substitutions at the -carbon of this residue disrupt the binding conformation of the peptide and possibly provide adverse steric effects.  相似文献

To assess the oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction associated with disease, toxic process and aging, in vivo and in vitro preventive effect of propolis extract against mitochondrial oxidative stress induced by two anticancer drugs (doxorubicin and vinblastin) have been investigated in female wistar rat using liver and heart mitochondria. The results show that doxorubicin and vinblastin altered mitochondrial functions as observed by a decrease in respiratory control value, an activation of swelling and overproduction of superoxide anion. Myocardial tissue from doxorubicin treated rats showed a marked increase in malondialdehyde production, a depletion of reduced glutathione contents and an inhibition of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities. Similar results were also observed in liver tissue. Pretreatment of rats with propolis extract (100 mg/kg/day po) (10(-4) M ip) administered 4 days prior to doxorubicin (20 mg/kg) and/or vinblastin (2 mg/kg) injection, substantially reduced the peroxidative damage in myocardium and hepatic tissues and markedly restored the tissues catalase and SOD activities. The results strongly suggest that propolis extract protects heart and liver tissues from oxidative stress by protecting the mitochondria.  相似文献
