Few studies link biochemical, cellular and whole animal effects of toxic compounds with growth and reproductive output on invertebrate model organisms. Thus, we explore the effects of xenoestrogens on nereid worms. Larvae of Platynereis dumerilii exposed to estradiol (E(2)) ethynylestradiol (EE(2)) and nonyplhenol (NP) observing the effects on growth, primordial germ cell (PGC) proliferation and maturation. In addition, a single exposure study was performed with a 50 days latency period on adult worms of Nereis succinea. Since reduced glutathione (GSH) is required in detoxification of NP and is the precursor of the spawning pheromone nereithione (CSSG) in N. succinea, we analysed how the estrogenic chemical NP affects GSH concentrations. PGC were not affected by exposure to E(2) and EE(2) from 24hpf to 6 days. Chronic exposure of P. dumerilii with NP over the full life cycle did not influence segment proliferation. Mature females that developed, even at high concentrations, were able to spawn and successful fertilization occurred. However, at high NP levels no P. dumerilii males matured. A significant decline of GSH can be seen in N. succinea males upon treatment with NP, but not in females, indicating that females stabilize GSH levels even in stress situations. This study shows some results that link the foundation to causally integrate toxic exposure to xenoestrogens with development, growth and reproductive outputs in nereidid polychaetes.  相似文献

The appearance of the spionid polychaete Marenzelleria spp. in the Tay estuary (Scotland) was first reported in 1984. Since estuaries are known as environments where abiotic conditions fluctuate widely, a laboratory study was conducted aimed to elucidate how this introduced species deals with low oxygen concentrations and exposure to hydrogen sulphide. Experimental evidence reveals that during severe hypoxia Marenzelleria cf. wireni switched to anaerobic pathways known from other marine invertebrates. Under the influence of sulphide (1 mmol l-1) accumulation of anaerobic end products is more pronounced. It is assumed that in the presence of sulphide, due to its inhibition of aerobic respiration, the worms have to switch to anaerobic energy production directly after the onset of hypoxia. Seasonal differences in the metabolic reaction were found. It was shown that in specimens that were filled with gametes (winter), accumulation of end products of anaerobic metabolism was more pronounced than in immature worms (summer). The amount of succinate, an indicator for anaerobic energy production for instance, was nearly twice as high in the winter specimens. Since the amount of thiosulphate (a typical sulphide detoxification product) in the tissues is relatively low, it is suggested that Marenzelleria cf. wireni also accumulates other detoxification products. Sulphite, however, also known as a detoxification product, was found only in traces. Field measurements provide evidence that the potential of Marenzelleria cf. wireni to survive low oxygen and high sulphide concentrations is clearly higher than that normally needed in the Tay estuary.  相似文献

Extracts of gonad, body fluid and spawning water (into which gametes have been released by the process of spawning) were tested for the presence of spawning-inducing activity (SIA) on both sexes of the polychaetes Nereis succinea (Frey and Leuckhart) and Platynereis dumerilii (Audouin and Milne-Edwards). Gonadal and body fluid extracts from Asterias rubens (L.) and Echinus esculentus (L.) (echinoderms), Arenicola marina (L.) (polychaete), Clupea harengus (L.) (teleost) and body fluid and spawning water of Nereis virens (Sars) (polychaete) all exhibit SIA on male N. succinea. C. harengus extract from male gonads also had SIA on male P. dumerilii. Phytoplankton monoculture extracts were also tested. The cryptomonad (Rhodomonas baltica) (Karsten) had SIA on male P. dumerilii, and the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Bohlin) had some activity on Mytilus edulis (L.). The active fraction of R. baltica is chromatographically similar to uric acid (the natural sperm-release pheromone produced by females of P. dumerilii) [Nature 382 (1996) 214], but has a different retention time and UV absorbance spectra on reverse phase HPLC. Conspecific extracts of spawning water and gonadal material did not have SIA on the same and opposite sex in A. marina and N. virens. The role of chemical signals in marine invertebrates is discussed in relation to their mode of spawning.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to investigate the sex-specific differences to feeding responses of the shore crab Carcinus maenas throughout the year. Results demonstrate that female shore crabs exhibit stronger feeding responses than males throughout the year with a significantly reduced feeding response in males during the summer months' reproductive season. We also studied the possible function(s) of the moulting hormone, 20-hydroxyecdysone (Crustecdysone) that has been described as a potential female-produced sex pheromone to initiate male reproductive behaviour in a number of crustaceans. We recently presented evidence that for shore crabs this is not the case and now show that the steroid is instead functioning as a sex-specific feeding deterrent protecting the moulting 'soft' female crabs. Whilst male shore crabs were deterred from prey (Mytilus edulis) and synthetic feeding stimulants glycine and taurine when these feeding stimulants were spiked with crustecdysone, intermoult female crabs were significantly less affected and rarely deterred from feeding. This sex specificity of the moulting hormone, in combination with the female sex pheromone, which has no anti-feeding properties, ensures that male crabs mate with soft-shelled, moulted females rather than engage in cannibalism, such as found frequently in cases when soft-shelled females are exposed to intermoult females.  相似文献

In zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) simultaneous release of gametes and peaks in larval densities at particular locations suggest that spawning is triggered by synchronizing stimuli. Furthermore, spawning tends to occur only after an adequate environmental temperature is reached. To test the hypothesis that phytoplankton and gamete-associated chemicals initiate spawning in zebra mussels and that the responsiveness to such chemicals is affected by ambient temperature, the spawning response of zebra mussels to extracts from algae, a cryptomonad, and a cyanobacterium and to water associated with released gametes was assayed in animals acclimated to 12 ^C and 17 ^C. For animals held at 12 ^C, only serotonin, a known activator of bivalve spawning used as a positive control, stimulated spawning. However, for animals acclimated to 17 ^C, extracts made from a diatom (Phaeodactylum), a brown alga (Fucus), and a cryptomonad (Rhodomonas) stimulated spawning in both sexes; extracts from green algae (Platymonas and Dunaliella) and a cyanobacterium (Oscillatoria) did not cause spawning. Water associated with either released sperm or eggs elicited spawning in both females and males. Positive controls, stimulated with serotonin, spawned at a high (>90%) rate, whereas no negative control spawned. Thus, phytoplankton chemicals and gamete-associated factors may have a role in synchronizing spawning in zebra mussels once adequate ambient temperature is reached.  相似文献

Metabolic rate determines the physiological and life-history performances of ectotherms. Thus, the extent to which such rates are sensitive and plastic to environmental perturbation is central to an organism''s ability to function in a changing environment. Little is known of long-term metabolic plasticity and potential for metabolic adaptation in marine ectotherms exposed to elevated pCO2. Consequently, we carried out a series of in situ transplant experiments using a number of tolerant and sensitive polychaete species living around a natural CO2 vent system. Here, we show that a marine metazoan (i.e. Platynereis dumerilii) was able to adapt to chronic and elevated levels of pCO2. The vent population of P. dumerilii was physiologically and genetically different from nearby populations that experience low pCO2, as well as smaller in body size. By contrast, different populations of Amphiglena mediterranea showed marked physiological plasticity indicating that adaptation or acclimatization are both viable strategies for the successful colonization of elevated pCO2 environments. In addition, sensitive species showed either a reduced or increased metabolism when exposed acutely to elevated pCO2. Our findings may help explain, from a metabolic perspective, the occurrence of past mass extinction, as well as shed light on alternative pathways of resilience in species facing ongoing ocean acidification.  相似文献

Mate choice and mating preferences often rely on the information content of signals exchanged between potential partners. In species where a female''s reproduction is the terminal event in life it is to be expected that females choose high quality males and assess males using some honest indicator of male quality. The Nereidid polychaete, Neanthes acuminata, exhibits monogamous pairing and the release of eggs by females terminates her life and larval success relies entirely on a male''s ability to provide paternal care. As such females should have developed reliable, condition-dependent criteria to choose mates to guarantee survival and care for offspring. We show that females actively chose males experienced in fatherhood over others. In the absence of experienced males dominance, as evident from male-male fights, is utilized for mate selection. The preference for experienced males is not affected by previous social interactions between the individuals. We show that the choice of the partner is based on chemical signals demonstrating a ‘scent of experience’ to females providing evidence for the role of chemical signals in sexual selection for paternal care adding to our understanding of the mechanisms regulating condition-dependent mate choice.  相似文献

Olfactory sensitivity to bile salts is wide-spread in teleosts; however, which bile salts are released in sufficient quantities to be detected is unclear. The current study identified bile salts in the intestinal and bile fluids of Solea senegalensis by mass spectrometry–liquid chromatography and assessed their olfactory potency by the electro-olfactogram. The main bile salts identified in the bile were taurocholic acid (342 mM) and taurolithocholic acid (271 mM) plus a third, unidentified, bile salt of 532.3 Da. These three were also present in the intestinal fluid (taurocholic acid, 4.13 mM; taurolithocholic acid, 0.4 mM). In sole-conditioned water, only taurocholic acid (0.31 μM) was released in sufficient quantities to be measured (release rate: 24 nmol kg−1 min−1). Sole had high olfactory sensitivity to taurocholic acid but not to taurolithocholic acid. Furthermore, olfactory sensitivity was higher in the upper (right) olfactory epithelium than the lower (left). These two bile acids contribute about 40% of the olfactory potency of intestinal fluid and account for the difference in potency at the two epithelia. Taurocholic acid (but not taurolithocholic acid), and possibly other types of bile acid not tested, could be used as chemical signals and the upper olfactory epithelium is specialised for their detection.  相似文献
