A mirror has been shown to reduce stereotypies in horses housed singly, presumably as it may provide some sort of 'social stimulation'. We investigated here whether a mirror may have such a 'quietening effect' on birds kept in a laboratory, such as European starlings. We observed the reactions to a mirror of starlings of different sexes and with different social experiences. Females and pair-raised males seemed calmer, showing less movement and more comfort behaviour than socially and single-raised birds. The results are discussed in the light of the species' social organization and the effect of social experience. We conclude that a mirror might be a good way to reduce isolation-related stress in laboratory birds, but that sex and social experience of an individual have to be taken into account, as otherwise effects opposite to those wished for may be induced.  相似文献

The CD spectra of a number of helical complexes formed by purine monomers and complementary pyrimidine polyribonucleotides have been observed over the range 200–400 nm. Each of these spectra is quite similar to that of the corresponding polymer–polymer helix. The spectra are evidently determined by the geometry of the asymmetric array of bases, largely unperturbed by the ribose–phosphate backbone. The helix structure (A-form), on the other hand, is determined by the backbone of the pyrimidine homopolymer. Data on the monomer–polymer complexes support the conclusion that the CD spectra of ribohomopolymer helices depend primarily on interastrand interactions of the same transition within a given base and are relatively unaffected by transitions of the complementary base.  相似文献

Nr2e1 encodes a stem cell fate determinant of the mouse forebrain and retina. Abnormal regulation of this gene results in retinal, brain, and behavioral abnormalities in mice. However, little is known about the functionality of human NR2E1. We investigated this functionality using a novel knock-in humanized-mouse strain carrying a single-copy bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC). We also documented, for the first time, the expression pattern of the human BAC, using an NR2E1-lacZ reporter strain. Unexpectedly, cerebrum and olfactory bulb hypoplasia, hallmarks of the Nr2e1-null phenotype, were not fully corrected in animals harboring one functional copy of human NR2E1. These results correlated with an absence of NR2E1-lacZ reporter expression in the dorsal pallium of embryos and proliferative cells of adult brains. Surprisingly, retinal histology and electroretinograms demonstrated complete correction of the retina-null phenotype. These results correlated with appropriate expression of the NR2E1-lacZ reporter in developing and adult retina. We conclude that the human BAC contained all the elements allowing correction of the mouse-null phenotype in the retina, while missing key regulatory regions important for proper spatiotemporal brain expression. This is the first time a separation of regulatory mechanisms governing NR2E1 has been demonstrated. Furthermore, candidate genomic regions controlling expression in proliferating cells during neurogenesis were identified.  相似文献
