In 1990 and 1994, two males of Golden Eagles were found with small lead particles in their stomachs. Both individuals died soon after they had been taken sitting on the soil in bad condition. There are some findings of dead eagles in the same area which showed no sign of having been injured. The two cases of presumed lead poisoning coincide with intense efforts to reduce the number of ChamoixRupicapra rupicapra by hunting. The bullets used contain a nucleus of lead and eagles were seen taking the entrails of the shot chamoix.     

Genetic counselling for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: are we ready for it?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a dominant genetic disorder of the myocardium associated with dysfunctional contractile proteins. The major risk of HCM is sudden cardiac death, which may occur even in asymptomatic carriers. Causes are highly heterogeneous. Over 140 different mutations in nine sarcomeric genes have been described to date. The majority of cases (80% or more) may eventually be traced to one of these genes. Although genetic counselling is suggested even if mutations are not known, molecular diagnosis implies new options such as carrier identification or - theoretically - preclinical risk stratification. A scheme according to which cardiologists and clinical and molecular geneticists could cooperate in counselling patients and managing HCM clinically is proposed.

UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 1-carboxyvinyl-transferase from Acinetobacter calcoaceticus

Abstract We have analyzed the sequence downstream of rpoN from Zcinetobacter calcoaceticus and identified an open reading frame encoding a protein with high similarity to UDP- N -acetylgucosamine 1-carboxyvinyl-transferase (MurZ). Multicopy plasmids encoding this enzyme conferred phosphomycin resistance to A. calcoaceticus . The polar effect of a rpoN mutation on the phosphomycin resistance level suggests that murZ is, in part, cotranscribed with rpoN . These observations confirm that A. calcoaceticus represents the first exceptin from a conserved genetic context of rpoN observed in several other Gram-negative bacteria.
