Even though the idea that modes of speciation other than allopatric speciation are possible in nature is now widespread, compelling examples of ecological speciation in sympatry remain rare. We studied an undescribed radiation of haplochromine cichlids in a young crater lake in western Uganda, and in the small river that is nearby but has currently no known surface connection to the lake. We describe two different modes of speciation that occurred in this cichlid lineage within the past 1,500–10,000 years. Not constrained by gene flow, allopatric divergence between river and lake cichlids affects many different morphological traits as well as nuptial colouration—muted in the river, but intensified and polymorphic in lake cichlids—and neutral genetic differentiation. More surprisingly, we demonstrate a case for sympatric speciation within the small lake that is associated with dramatic differences in male breeding colouration (yellow with bright red-chest versus bright blue) and subtle differences in microhabitat, feeding regime and morphology. Reproductive isolation by assortative mating is suggested by significant differentiation between yellow and blue males in neutral markers of gene flow despite complete sympatry. We hypothesize speciation is mediated by divergent selection on sexual signalling between microhabitats.

In many animals, sexual selection on male traits results from female mate choice decisions made during a sequence of courtship behaviors. We use a bower‐building cichlid fish, Nyassachromis cf. microcephalus, to show how applying standard selection analysis to data on sequential female assessment provides new insights into sexual selection by mate choice. We first show that the cumulative selection differentials confirm previous results suggesting female choice favors males holding large volcano‐shaped sand bowers. The sequential assessment analysis reveals these cumulative differentials are the result of selection acting on different bower dimensions during the courtship sequence; females choose to follow males courting from tall bowers, but choose to engage in premating circling with males holding bowers with large diameter platforms. The approach we present extends standard selection analysis by partitioning the variances of increasingly accurate estimates of male reproductive fitness and is applicable to systems in which sequential female assessment drives sexual selection on male traits.  相似文献

Divergent lateral plate phenotypes in stickleback represent one of only a few cases known, where a single gene underlies the phenotype under divergent selection between different habitats. However, the selection pressures leading to the repeated loss of lateral plates in freshwater are still not well understood. By genotyping 838 individuals from 9 independently colonized lakes and 1 marine population in Iceland, we found 1) that only in some lakes are phenotypes associated with the expected genotype and 2) that the independent repeated occurrence of a rarely described plate phenotype is expressed in the absence of an allele that is usually associated with this phenotype. This suggests that either other genes such as modifiers might be under divergent selection between lakes or that lateral plate expression in these populations is restricted due to environmental constraints.  相似文献

The effect of agricultural management practices on geochemical cycles in moderate ecosystems is by far better understood than in semiarid regions, where fertilizer availability and climatic conditions are less favorable. We studied the impact of different fertilizer regimens in an agricultural long-term observatory in Burkina Faso at three different plant development stages (early leaf development, flowering, and senescence) of sorghum cultivars. Using real-time PCR, we investigated functional microbial communities involved in key processes of the nitrogen cycle (nitrogen fixation, ammonia oxidation, and denitrification) in the rhizosphere. The results indicate that fertilizer treatments and plant development stages combined with environmental factors affected the abundance of the targeted functional genes in the rhizosphere. While nitrogen-fixing populations dominated the investigated communities when organic fertilizers (manure and straw) were applied, their numbers were comparatively reduced in urea-treated plots. In contrast, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) increased not only in absolute numbers but also in relation to the other bacterial groups investigated in the urea-amended plots. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea exhibited higher numbers compared to AOB independent of fertilizer application. Similarly, denitrifiers were also more abundant in the urea-treated plots. Our data imply as well that, more than in moderate regions, water availability might shape microbial communities in the rhizosphere, since low gene abundance data were obtained for all tested genes at the flowering stage, when water availability was very limited.Land degradation is one of the most serious threats to food production on the African continent. Soil erosion, nutrient depletion, low organic matter content, and unfavorable pH values are some of the reasons for a deficient soil fertility (30), mainly in Central African countries. Combined with high variability and irregular distribution of rainfall, these factors contribute to negative nutrient balances. For example, 4.4 million tons of nitrogen (N) are lost per year in African soils, but only 0.8 million tons are reapplied by fertilization (12, 34). Since nitrogen is a key nutrient determining the productivity of agroecosystems (7, 11, 43), it is of central importance to optimize the nitrogen balance in these countries, mainly by steering the genetic resources of soil microbes in a way that losses of applied nitrogen are minimized and biological nitrogen fixation is increased. The aim should be to obtain a highly efficient nitrogen turnover, with leaching of nitrate and losses of gaseous products such as nitrous oxide (N2O) or dinitrogen (N2) as low as possible.Despite the importance of this issue, not much data are available on microbial community structure and function related to the nitrogen cycle in agroecosystems of Central Africa, and scenarios from moderate climatic regions cannot simply be transferred to tropical agroecosystems. Furthermore, the few studies published thus far only investigated effects of agricultural management on a single process of the nitrogen turnover (18, 20, 32) and ignore the fact that nitrogen turnover is a network of closely interlinked processes. Therefore, we sought to investigate the effects of different fertilizer regimens on multiple transformation processes within the nitrogen cycle in agroecosystems from semiarid areas in Central Africa. We investigated nitrogen dynamics on a full-cycle approach, including the most important steps in well-aerated agricultural soils (nitrification, denitrification, and nitrogen fixation). We hypothesized that each fertilizer regimen results in typical abundance pattern of the functional populations. While in moderate agroecosystems the plant (respectively, the plant development stage and the plant performance) plays an important role in shaping microbial community structure and function in the rhizosphere, we further postulated that nitrogen turnover and the corresponding populations are also influenced by the availability of water in semiarid soils. To test these hypotheses on a molecular basis, we quantified bacterial genes encoding the nitrogenase reductase (nifH), ammonia monooxygenase (amoA), and nitrite reductase (nirK and nirS), as well as archaeal amoA genes, by real-time PCR and linked the data to soil properties and grain yield.  相似文献

Sexual selection arising through female mate choice typically favours males with larger, brighter and louder signals. A critical challenge in sexual selection research is to determine the degree to which this pattern results from direct mate choice, where females select individual males based on variation in signalling traits, or indirect mate choice, where male competition governs access to reproductively active females. We investigated female mate choice in a lekking Lake Malawi cichlid fish, Hemitilapia oxyrhynchus, in which males build and aggressively defend sand 'bowers'. Similar to previous studies, we found that male reproductive success was positively associated with bower height and centrality on the lek. However, this pattern resulted from males holding these territories encountering more females, and thus their greater success was due to indirect mate choice. Following initial male courtship, an increase in the relative mating success of some males was observed, but this relative increase was unrelated to bower size or position. Crucially, experimentally manipulating bowers to resemble those of a co-occurring species had no appreciable effect on direct choice by females or male spawning success. Together, these results suggest indirect mate choice is the dominant force determining male-mating success in this species, and that bowers are not signals used in direct mate choice by females. We propose that, in this species, bowers have a primary function in intraspecific male competition, with the most competitive males maintaining larger and more central bowers that are favoured by sexual selection due to higher female encounter rates.  相似文献

The aim was to study the influence of abiotic (elevated ozone) or biotic stress (Phytophthora citricola) or their combination on soil biological components and processes in the rhizosphere of young beech trees. Ectomycorrhizal and overall microbial community composition was studied at two soil depths in a lysimeter experiment with 7 year old trees of Fagus sylvatica. As a functional parameter, potential enzyme activities were measured in mycorrhizosphere soil and on excised mycorrhizal tips. The degree of mycorrhization, structure and potential enzymatic activities of mycorrhizal communities were only slightly influenced by treatments. Soil enzyme activities were depressed under elevated ozone and stimulated by P. citricola under ambient but not under elevated ozone. Overall microbial community composition (PLFA) and ectomycorrhizal diversity changed with depth. PLFA analyses not only suggested a reaction of the microbial community to elevated ozone but also indicated an increase in plant stress related components. No influence of the biotic stress on ectomycorrhizal or overall microbial community structure was detected. Changes in the mycorrhizosphere community structure and function due to ozone may be explained by the quality of plant derived carbon.  相似文献

The influence of long-term chronic ozone exposure on carbon fluxes from young beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) into the phospholipid fraction of microbial communities (PLFA) in the rhizosphere and into the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fraction was studied in a lysimeter experiment using 13C depleted CO2 over one vegetation period to identify possible changes in below ground carbon translocation processes due to the plant stress. It could be shown that microbial biomass as well as individual microbial communities and their activity pattern in the rhizosphere of young beech trees are mainly driven by the vegetation period. An increase in total microbial biomass as well as individual microbial communities was detected during the vegetation period from June to September. However, also a clear ozone effect was visible mainly at the end of the vegetation period. Enzyme activities and PLFA data indicated earlier induced plant senescence as a response to the elevated ozone treatment. Furthermore higher microbial biomass and abundance of plant C utilizing microbes was observed in elevated ozone treatments over the whole vegetation period.  相似文献

In many haplochromine cichlid fish, male nuptial coloration is subject to female mate choice and plays a central role in the evolution of reproductive isolation between incipient species. Intraspecific variation in male coloration may serve as a target for diversifying sexual selection and provide a starting point for species divergence. Here, we investigated a polychromatism in Neochromis omnicaeruleus, a haplochromine from Lake Victoria, East-Africa. In this species, male coloration ranges from skyblue to yellow-red and females are grey-blue to yellow. We found that both genetic and environmental factors influence the expression of these colours during individual development. In a natural population, we found that male colour was associated with size and sexual maturity: yellow males were smaller than blue males and tended to be sexually immature. In females, size and maturity did not differ between colour types. Laboratory crosses revealed that there is a heritable component to the observed colour variation: yellow parents produced more yellow offspring than blue parents. Together with repeated aquarium observations of yellow individuals that gradually become blue, these data suggest that yellow males change to blue as they approach sexual maturity, and that the occurrence and timing of this transition is influenced by both environmental and genetic effects. The significance of this mechanism of colour expression as a possible target for divergent selection remains to be evaluated.  相似文献
