Two viruses occur widely in lupins in Britain. Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), of which two strains were isolated, was found mainly in named Russell varieties. Lupin mottle virus (LMV), a previously undescribed strain of the bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) common pea mosaic virus (CPMV) complex, was found more commonly in seedling lupins. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was isolated once. The AMV strains were differentiated by their reaction in Phaseolus vulgaris; they were serologically closely related. Both AMV and LMV were aphid transmitted but not transmitted in lupin seed. LMV was distantly serologically related to both BYMV and CPMV. It cross-protected against BYMV but not against CPMV and it differed from both these viruses in some host reactions. The CMV isolate from lupins was similar to type CMV. It was transmitted both mechanically and by aphid, easily from cucumber to cucumber, but with difficulty from cucumber to lupin.  相似文献

Comparative transmission by leafhoppers of three tungro isolates obtained from the Philippines, India and Malaysia, and of an infectious clone of the Philippine isolate of rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) by agroinoculation, was conducted on 12 rice cultivars. The symptoms, including height of inoculated plants were recorded and the efficiency of RTBV and rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) transmission was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In most cases, the reduction of height and leaf symptoms of plants infected with RTBV and/or RTSV by the three isolates were similar in any given cultivar. On cultivar ASD 7 , the Malaysian isolate showed more severe yellow orange leaf discolouration symptoms than the Indian isolate which in turn had more severe leaf discolouration than the Philippine isolate. On the other hand, cultivars ASD 7 and Ptb 18 produced the most severe yellow orange leaf discolouration when agroinoculated with an infectious RTBV clone of the Philippine isolate. There was some variation in the transmission profile of the two tungro viruses among the three isolates. However, there was no one clear set of characteristics by which one could use cultivars to distinguish isolates. The amount of viral DNA in agroinfected plants of cultivars Utri merah, Balimau putih, Utri Rajapan and ARC 11554 was low, while the amount was high in cultivars TN1, ASD7, Ptb 18 and TKM 6. There was high correlation between the amount of viral coat protein by ELISA and viral nucleic acid by DNA hybridisation on 10 agroinoculated rice cultivars; this might indicate that similar proportions of the total RTBV DNA are encapsidated in each cultivar.  相似文献

Abstract. The activities of five active-oxygen scavenging enzymes were compared for cold-lability and three were compared for chilling induction in two Zea genotypes of contrasting susceptibility to photoinhibition during chilling. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR, EC 1.6.5.4), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR, EC 1.8.5.1), and glutathione reductase (GTR, EC 1.6.4.2) in leaf extracts from plants grown without chilling stress were assayed at 19°C and 5°C. Enzymes from the chilling-susceptible Z. Mays cv. LG11 had lower specific activities at 5°C than did enzymes from the chilling-tolerant Z. diploperennis, except for MDHAR where no significant differences were observed. The activities of SOD and APX from Z. diploperennis were double those of Z. mays at both assay temperatures. Monodehydroa-scrobate reductase and glutathione reductase activities in both species were reduced by 63–78% at a 5°C assay temperature. The dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) showed the greatest low-temperature lability losing 96% (Z. diploperennis) and 100% (Z. mays) of its activity at 5°C. To examine possible chilling-induced changes in levels of enzyme activity, plants of both Zea genotypes were transferred to growth chambers at 10°C at moderate light intensities. Glutathione reductase activity was found to increase within 24h in Z. diploperennis, but it decreased slightly in Z. mays. MDHAR activity decreased by 50% in Z. diploperennis but showed only a transient increase in activity in Z. mays.  相似文献

Abstract An important question in the host‐finding behaviour of a polyphagous insect is whether the insect recognizes a suite or template of chemicals that are common to many plants? To answer this question, headspace volatiles of a subset of commonly used host plants (pigeon pea, tobacco, cotton and bean) and nonhost plants (lantana and oleander) of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are screened by gas chromatography (GC) linked to a mated female H. armigera electroantennograph (EAG). In the present study, pigeon pea is postulated to be a primary host plant of the insect, for comparison of the EAG responses across the test plants. EAG responses for pigeon pea volatiles are also compared between females of different physiological status (virgin and mated females) and the sexes. Eight electrophysiologically active compounds in pigeon pea headspace are identified in relatively high concentrations using GC linked to mass spectrometry (GC‐MS). These comprised three green leaf volatiles [(2E)‐hexenal, (3Z)‐hexenylacetate and (3Z)‐hexenyl‐2‐methylbutyrate] and five monoterpenes (α‐pinene, β‐myrcene, limonene, E‐β‐ocimene and linalool). Other tested host plants have a smaller subset of these electrophysiologically active compounds and even the nonhost plants contain some of these compounds, all at relatively lower concentrations than pigeon pea. The physiological status or sex of the moths has no effect on the responses for these identified compounds. The present study demonstrates how some host plants can be primary targets for moths that are searching for hosts whereas the other host plants are incidental or secondary targets.  相似文献

Sugar-beet downy mildew is most prevalent in England in the sugar-beet and mangold seed-growing area of South Lincolnshire and West Norfolk. The most widespread and severe recent outbreaks were in 1957, and in 1965 when 6412 acres were reported with more than 10% infected plants. The fungus usually overwinters in sugar-beet and mangold seed crops, and in England other ways of overwintering are seldom important. Steckling beds are infected in the autumn, and the disease may increase rapidly in the seed crop in early spring. Summer-sown stecklings get more downy mildew than stecklings sown in spring under a cereal cover crop, and direct-drilled seed crops get more downy mildew than transplanted crops.  相似文献

The symptoms and characteristics of two virus and one fungus disease and four nutritional disorders of sugar beet which cause chlorosis and necrosis of the foliage are described. The causes of the diseases and methods of distinguishing between them have been investigated by analytical, pathological and field experimental methods.
Experiments in which diagnosis was confirmed by serological and spectrochemical methods show that the two often easily confused diseases, sugar-beet yellows virus and magnesium deficiency, can be visually distinguished.
Sugar-beet yellows virus reduces the potassium, but slightly increases the magnesium content of the leaves.
Magnesium deficiency symptoms are associated with a low magnesium content of the foliage, but may be induced by salt applications without greatly affecting the magnesium analysis.
'Potash' deficiency symptoms are often, but not necessarily, associated with a low potassium analysis and may actually be caused solely by a deficiency of sodium. In the field, symptoms are induced by sulphate of ammonia and phosphate applications and may be prevented in some cases by the application of either salt or muriate of potash, in others by salt only. Some interchangeability of the functions of potassium and sodium in the plant is suggested.
Manganese deficiency symptoms are associated with a low manganese content of the leaves, which can be readily increased by spraying or injection with manganese sulphate solution, but a high concentration of manganese in the foliage, such as sometimes occurs naturally on acid soils, has a toxic effect.  相似文献

A survey of aphids and virus diseases of sugar-beet root crops in eastern England was made between 1940 and 1948. Prior to 1943 the observations were made on fertilizer experiments; from 1943 onwards they were made on commercial fields selected for position in relation to beet and mangold seed crops. The incidence of beet yellows increased with increasing numbers of Myzus persicae , but not of Aphis fabae. The relation with M. persicae was sufficiently close to suggest that it is the most important, possibly the only important, vector of beet yellows virus. Beet mosaic virus also increased with increasing numbers of M. persicae , but the relation was not close enough to exclude the possibility of other vectors.
Numbers of A. fabae on sugar beet were slightly, but consistently, depressed by the use of salt as a fertilizer. Other fertilizers had variable effects. Neither aphids nor virus are likely to be greatly affected by fertilizers.
Beet yellows is most prevalent in areas where seed crops are grown, but within these areas nearness to individual seed crops did not appear to increase its incidence. M. persicae were more numerous on sugar beet in seed-crop areas than elsewhere, and this alone might account for the prevalence of yellows. Beet mosaic virus is more closely associated with seed crops than is beet yellows. It is most prevalent near to seed crops within the seed-crop areas.  相似文献

The cotton aphid ( Aphis gossypii Glover) is a cosmopolitan pest species consisting of various host plant-associated lineages that appear to have different patterns of insecticide resistance, electrophoretic banding, and reproductive output across alternative host species. Debate continues as to whether these differences represent intraspecific variation or indicate a complex of cryptic or sibling species. We studied the host plant-related ecology of two asexual lineages of A. gossypii associated with the families Malvaceae and Cucurbitaceae, respectively, in particular the host plant finding and acceptance processes of the alate forms. The two lineages proved to be differentiated across host plants in terms of: (1) their landing and settling behaviour, nymphal production rate, and subsequent colony establishment (i.e. nymphal survival and development) and (2) their sensory abilities in relation to host plant-derived odours. Furthermore, genetic structuring according to host plant type was detected using the gene for elongation factor 1-α. The magnitude of the genetic differentiation across lineages was low, perhaps indicating a relatively recent divergence. The results demonstrate: (1) the presence of (at least) two cryptic species within the current definition of A. gossypii , as anticipated in previous studies, and (2) the practicalities of using a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the 'limits' of asexual species. If sexuals can be generated from each of these lineages, this conclusion will be open to further testing.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 503–519.  相似文献
