ABSTRACT. Myrionecta rubra, a ubiquitous planktonic ciliate, has received much attention due to its wide distribution, occurrence as a red tide organism, and unusual cryptophyte endosymbiont. Although well studied in coastal waters, M. rubra is poorly examined in the open ocean. In the Irminger Basin, North Atlantic, the abundance of M. rubra was 0–5 cells/ml, which is low compared with that found in coastal areas. Distinct patchiness (100 km) was revealed by geostatistical analysis. Multiple regression indicated there was little relationship between M. rubra abundance and a number of environmental factors, with the exception of temperature and phytoplankton biomass, which influenced abundance in the spring. We also improve on studies that indicate distinct size classes of M. rubra; we statistically recognise four significantly distinct width classes (5–16, 12–23, 18–27, 21–33 μm), which decrease in abundance with increasing size. A multinomial logistic regression revealed the main variable correlated with this size distribution was ambient nitrate concentration. Finally, we propose a hypothesis for the distribution of sizes, involving nutrients, feeding, and dividing of the endosymbiont.  相似文献

Adult winter moths ( Operophtera brumata (L.)) are active in late autumn or early winter. The eggs overwinter in the canopy of trees and hatch simultaneously with the bursting of host tree buds. Many young larvae disperse on the wind on silk strands. Larvae are polyphagus and feed until late spring when they pupate in soil or leaf litter. The duration of the egg and pupal stages is genetically determined and varies with latitude. The egg stage is long in the north and short in the south, while the pupal stage is short in the north and long in the south.
The literature on the ecology and physiology of winter moth is reviewed. The factors maintaining the unusual phenology are discussed. It is concluded that the larval stage is early because mature leaves of many host trees are unsuitable as food, because parasitism against later larvae is more intense, and because summer temperatures may be injurious to larvae. The adult period is late in the year so that the final stages of pupal development occur in cool conditions and so that adults emerge after most insect predators have ceased activity. Throughout most of the range retarding the adult emergence period would cause activity to be impeded by severe winter weather; in the south this is not so and it is suggested that eggs must be on the trees for a minimum period to ensure synchronization of egg hatch with bud burst. The protracted adult emergence period may be an adaptation reducing predation by birds.  相似文献

The effect of a pre-planting application of oxamyl on the yields of six potato cultivars was studied in co-operative field trials in 1981. Two sites were ‘uninfested’ with potato cyst nematodes (PCN), two were lightly infested (<25 eggs/g soil) and six were moderately to heavily infested (three with Globodera rostochiensis and three with G. pallida). At the uninfested and lightly infested sites oxamyl had little effect on mid-season haulm weights or on final tuber yields. At sites moderately to heavily infested with G. rostochiensis the haulm growth of all cultivars tended to be increased by a similar amount on plots treated with oxamyl, Pentland Dell being least responsive. Yield was increased by different amounts, the increases being least for cvs Cara and Maris Piper and most for Corsair and Pentland Dell. At the sites moderately to heavily infested with G. pallida Cara was again tolerant, its yield being increased little by oxamyl compared with the other cultivars. Maris Piper gave the largest yield increase. Final populations of PCN on non-resistant cultivars were reduced by oxamyl at some sites but not at others. Resistant cultivars also decreased the final numbers of PCN at most sites. Two cultivars derived from Solanum vernei with different degrees of resistance, appeared to be almost equally effective in controlling G. rostochiensis and G. pallida.  相似文献

South American leaf blight caused by Dothidella ulei occurs only in tropical America, on both indigenous and cultivated Hevea spp. The conidium (Fusicladium macrosporum) is a 1-septate, dry, air-borne spore about 40 × 7 μ, occurring on the abaxial surface of dry leaves in dense, powdery, olive-green masses, and with one or both cells collapsed. The conidia adhere to the surface of water droplets, becoming turgid, and are disseminated in splash droplets. A Hirst volumetric trap, placed within a prepared source in north-west Trinidad, showed a diurnal periodicity of conidial production, with a maximum at 10.00 h and minima at night or in the early morning. On rainless days there was also a minor peak at 20.00 h. Transient increases occurred after rain, most of which fell around noon. On wet days almost equal numbers of conidia were dispersed between 10.00 and 12.00 h. Large increases occurred in 87% of all rain showers between 09.00 and 13.00 h. After 13.00 h fewer rain showers caused such increases; the lowest (36%) was between 21.00 and 01.00 h. Twice as many were trapped on sunny days (> 9 h sun) at 09.00 h when there was full sunshine, compared with overcast days (< 5 h sun). A more clearly defined morning maximum occurred on relatively windy days, compared with calmer ones. Conidial sporulation became very low, or ceased, where rain fell below a mean of 3–4 mm per day for at least 20 days. Abundant sporulation occurred with a daily rainfall about twice this amount. The results support the belief that if Dothidella ulei appeared in Malaysia its spread would be rapid and its effects damaging.  相似文献

Diploids with different mutations in the structural gene for nitrate reductase recombine to produce measurable enzyme activity. Radiation induces recombination with high frequency, but only in cells which will survive the treatment.
