An evaluation of EPR measurements ofthe organic free radical content of individual seeds in thenon-destructive testing of seed viability.—J. exp. Bot.37: 1675–1684. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of individualintact seeds of a range of legumes and brassicas have been obtainedin order to measure their organic free radical contents. Norelationship was found between free radical content and seedviability or early seedling growth for both legumes and brassicas.The testa had a much greater free radical concentration thaneither the embryo axes or the cotyledons for all cultivars ofseed tested. The general high free radical content of the testasuggests that there is little possibility of EPR being usedto predict the viability of individual seeds. The spectroscopicsplitting factor of g = 2·0045 reported for the intactseeds is consistent with the radicals' arising from melanictype compounds. On the basis of precise trilobite examples, the difficulties and interest in cladistic analysis are emphasized. The problem of distinguishing plesiomorphic and apomorphic characters is exemplified in Morgatia with reference to auxiliary impressions of the glabella and vincular furrows. In Crozonaspis , cladograms by themselves do not clarify the distinction of primitive versus derived features; the stratigraphical distribution of species, although not conclusive, is helpful in clarifying relationships. Although stratigraphical data are essential for reconstructing species lineages, they may be misleading when dealing with taxa above the species level. SYNOPSIS. The following four subgenera. I based chiefly on the form of the macronucleus, are proposed for thr genus Blepharisma Perty 1852: 1) Compactum , having a single compact interphase macronucleus. Type species B Compactum hyalinum Perty. 2) Filijormis , having a vermiform or tubular elongate interphase macronuclcus. occasionally doubled or even fragmented in individuals. Type spcies B. (Filiformis) intermedium Bhandary. 3) Blepharisma , having an interphase macronucleus with two or more nodes usually connected by a very thin strand between the nodes. Type species B. (Blepharisma) Perisicinum Perty. 4) Halteroides , having an interphase macronucleus in two nodes connected by a thick strand. Type species B. (Halteroides) tropicum Bhandary. Differences between the subgenera also can be found in the size, pigmentation, presence or absence of cysts and conjugaion 26 species are presented.
While integradations between the subgenera and species exist, it is felt that separation of the four groups is warranted and may indicate possible evolutionary trends within the genus.  相似文献

In an experiment designed to investigate the rate of leaf appearanceand tiller production in young spaced plants of three clonesof perennial ryegrass grown in the field, it was found thatthe rate of leaf appearance per tiller increased linearly withmean soil temperature up to approx. 14 °C. The rate of productionof tillers in relation to the rate of leaf appearance (sitefilling) appeared to be virtually independent of weather conditions.In plants which were adequately established, but still relativelysmall, site filling was equal to or exceeded the theoreticalsteady state; all the tiller buds which were being formed weredeveloping into visible tillers. Thus the relative rate of tillerproduction was controlled by the rate of leaf appearance. Inlarger plants site filling was less complete, and site redundancieswere probably caused by within-plant competition for light atthe tiller bases. The present study investigates the effects of triacontanol (CH3(CH2)28CH2OH),on plant growth (root and stem), peroxidase activity (apicalmeristem tissue), and auxin destruction (apical meristem tissue)in ‘Little Marvel’ dwarf (LM) and ‘Alaska’peas (AP). Triacontanol inhibited root growth in LM comparedto untreated controls. However, root growth in AP tissue wasenhanced by 1.0 mg I–1 triacontanol and inhibited by allother treatments, in comparison to untreated controls. Wateruptake in triacontanol-treated AP plants was greater than inuntreated controls, with the converse being the case for LM.Triacontanol treatment caused an increase in peroxidase activityin both LM and AP plants compared to untreated controls. Interms of (1–14C)IAA destruction, GA3 + 0.01 mg 1–1triacontanol caused appreciable auxin breakdown (40%) in LMtissue, with GA3 + 0.1 mg 1–1 triacontanol giving a 43%decrease compared to untreated controls. In AP tissue, 10 µMGA3 increased auxin destruction by 188% whereas 0.1 mg I–1triacontanol caused a 20% decrease compared to untreated controls.The effects of triacontanol on root and stem growth, peroxidaseactivity, and auxin destruction appear to be cultivar-specific,with respect to LM and AP varieties of peas.  相似文献
