1. Urban development results in the decline of amphibian density and species richness. A logical next step towards understanding why urbanisation negatively impacts amphibians is to track species‐specific demographic responses to urbanisation. 2. We monitored growth of two‐lined salamander (Eurycea cirrigera Green) larvae over two complete cohorts (2006 and 2007) in nine western Georgia, U.S.A. streams. 3. We found that salamanders in streams surrounded by urbanised and developing catchments hatched at the same size as their reference‐stream counterparts, but achieved larger sizes within the first few months of growth. We evaluated the effect of four variables that correlate with the urban‐forest gradient and found that elevated temperatures in the urban environment, coupled with decreased intraspecific competition because of lower survivorship in these same habitats, were two of the most likely explanations for increased growth rates. 4. Such an increase in growth of surviving larvae may maintain population viability in urban areas where it has been shown survival is difficult because of increased in‐channel flow during flood events. Because larvae that do survive in urban streams undergo metamorphosis at large sizes, they may recoup a component of fitness (i.e. increased adult survivorship and reproduction) through growth.  相似文献

The annual cycle of the White-throated Sparrow, Zonotrichiaalbicollis, is reviewed with brief references to facets of nutritionaland energetic importance (1) illustrating the life of a smallbird in a varying environment, and (2) showing that certainannual events in field populations can be compared with similarmanifestations in caged individuals. Data from captives areemployed in discussions of energetic variations related to (1)food, the source of nutritive input, (2) fat, the major formof caloric storage in birds, and (3) caloric expenditure. Metabolizableenergy is partitioned by phase of the annual cycle into existenceenergy, including the costs of thermoregulation, and productiveenergy, including expenditures for nocturnal activity (Zugunruhe)and molt. Costs of vernal migration in field birds are comparedwith costs of nocturnal activity in captives to show that energeticestimates in each situation are compatible. This conclusionis supported by a metabolic estimate made for field birds thatis within 6% of the estimated metabolism of captives under similarconditions. Data and statistics from seven additional speciesof buntings are used to examine several bioenergetic principlesfor homoiotherms. (1) Minimal metabolism measured by energybalance methods is proportional to the 0.7 power of body weightbut is higher than standard or resting metabolism measured bygaseous methods. (2) Metabolized energy is inversely relatedto ambient temperature below 25°C, the estimated ad libitumcritical temperature. (3) Heat production and loss are proportionatelyhigher in summer-acclimatized birds below the ad libitum criticaltemperature due to reduced insulation. Two summary plots, relatingtemperature, metabolizable energy, and body weight are given.Directions for future research in the study of avian nutritionare suggested.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of acid rain and ozone on respiration rates of 1-year-old and current-year foliage of half-sib seedlings and mature clones of a ponderosa pine genotype by measurement of foliar metabolic heat rates. Two rain regimes (pH 5-1 and 3-0) were applied weekly to foliage only, from January to April 1992. Two ozone regimes (ambient and twice-ambient) were applied from September 1991 to November 1992. Metabolic heat rate was measured in April on 1-year-old foliage, in June on both 1-year-old and current-year foliage, and in November on current-year foliage in 1992. Except for current-year foliage in June, the metabolic heat rate was calculated per unit of both foliar dry mass and N mass. In seedlings, both measures of metabolic heat rate increased in late June for 1-year-old foliage exposed to twice-ambient ozone, and in November for current-year foliage exposed to the combination of twice-ambient ozone and pH 3-0 rain. In mature trees, metabolic heat rate was not affected significantly by ozone, rain acidity, or their interaction. In June, when both 1-year-old and current-year tissues were examined, the metabolic heat rate of expanding, current-year foliage was higher than that of fully expanded, 1-year-old foliage regardless of plant age or treatment combination.  相似文献

This paper deals with investigations of some electrical parametersin four host-virus interactions. (1) With gradient correctionsfrom healthy plants, injury was detected by the resistance ratioat a distance 1.5 mm external to the localized necrotic lesionscaused by tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) in leaves of Nicotianaglutinosa, and was interpreted as evidence of an altered metabolismpossibly associated with limiting cell-to-cell spread of thevirus. (2) The influence of systemic infections of virus X wasexamined in potato tubers. In one of the two varieties, viz.Bismarck, the magnitude of three parameters allowed the diagnosisof the presence of the virus. (3) Systemic infections of tomatospotted wilt (TSW) in leaves of N. glutinosa caused very markedchanges, affecting 21 out of 24 parameters. (4) Systemic infectionsof TMV in petioles of N. tabacum caused less pronounced changesthan those of TSW in leaves of N. glutinosa. On the basis of changes in major parameters, infection of TSWin leaves of N. glutinosa and infections of virus X in potatotubers var. Bismarck are considered to have certain featuresin common as regards influence on host metabolism. Possibleexplanations are given for some of the parameter changes.  相似文献
