We assessed the ability of several populations of the metal-hyperaccumulator species, Thlaspi caerulescens , to mobilize non-labile cadmium in soils historically contaminated by Pb/Zn mine spoil or sewage sludge. Radio- labile Cd was determined chemically as an ' E -value', [Cd E ], and biologically as an ' L -value', [Cd L ]. For comparison, chloride-extractable Cd, [Cdchlor], was also determined using 1 M CaCl2 as a single-step soil extractant. Values of [Cd L ] were measured for six populations of T. caerulescens that varied substantially in their ability to assimilate soil Cd, and a non-accumulator species with a similar growth habit, Lepidium heterophyllum . Seeds were sown in soil spiked with 109Cd and grown for 9–12 wk in a controlled environment room. Values of [Cd L ] were determined from the specific activity of 109Cd and concentration of Cd in the plant leaves. For the six soils studied, [Cd E ] ranged from 4.9 to 49% of total soil Cd [CdT]. Values of [Cd L ] were, in general, in close agreement with both [Cd E ] and [Cdchlor] and substantially less than [CdT]. However, [Cd L ] showed no correlation with the concentration of Cd in plant tissue, [Cdshoot]. This suggests that, in the soils studied, T. caerulescens did not mobilize non-labile soil Cd by producing root exudates or altering rhizosphere pH. The results imply that there may be significant restrictions to metal bioavailability, even to hyperaccumulator species, in heavily contaminated soils in which a large proportion of the metal may be present in 'non-labile' forms.  相似文献

Analysis of 1,063 stomach contents from 39 species of sea snakesindicates that about one-third of the shallow, warm, marine,Indo-Australian fish families are preyed upon by sea snakes.Families of eels and gobies are taken by the greatest numbersof snake species. Most species of sea snakes feed on fish familieswhose members are relatively sedentary, dwelling along the bottom,within burrows or reef crevices. With one exception, a fishegg-eating specialization found uniquely in the Aipysurus-Emydocephaluslineage, the dietary habits of sea snakes cannot be categorizedaccording to the snakes' three phylogenetic lineages. Eels,mullet-like, rabbitfish-like and goby-like fish forms are takenby all three lineages. Two or three snake species are generalists,and numerous ones specialize on eels, goby-like fish or catfish.There are differences among sea snake species in the relationshipbetween snake neck girth and the maximum diameter of the prey;in the relationships of both snake gape measurements and fanglength, to the type of prey taken; and in the relationship ofsnake shape and body proportions to the prey selected. Severalmodes of feeding have been observed among sea snakes: feedingin nooks and crannies in the bottom or in reefs, cruising nearthe bottom, and feeding in drift lines. Analysis of percentdigestion of stomach contents and projections backward to thetimes of prey capture provides evidence for feeding periodicity.The greatest amount of diet overlap is for two species of seasnakes which do not both occur at the same locality. Where speciesdo co-occur, diet overlap index values are lower. The numbersof species present as well as their relative abundances varyamong localities as does the relative importance of generalists,eel-eaters, egg-eaters and other specialized feeders.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Supraspecific taxa of the ciliate Order Tintinnida Corliss, 1955 are indexed by 304 entries; genetic type species are cited with reference to the original citation. The accompanying bibliography of 133 entries includes those publications cited in the index. Authors for several type citations are corrected, as is authorship of some genera, and a new type designation is made for Parundella to replace the previous erroneous designation. Potato aucuba mosaic virus (PAMV) has few reliable local lesion assay hosts. However, lesions formed when PAMV-inoculated leaves were exposed to thermal shock (dipping for 40 s in water at 50 or 2 °C). Leaves of Nicotiana tabacum (cv. Xanthi-nc, Samsun or Samsun NN), Hyoscyamus niger and Datura metel consistently developed necrotic lesions, leaves of Chenopodium amaranticolor developed whitish rings, and leaves of N. glutinosa developed diffuse cream-coloured rings and spots. In PAMV-inoculated leaves of Xanthi-nc tobacco, C. amaranticolor and D. metel, lesions formed only in areas exposed to light. Thermal shocks applied to systemically infected leaves of Xanthi-nc tobacco induced necrotic vein banding patterns. In inoculated Xanthi-nc tobacco leaves, PAMV seemed confined to local lesions. The rate of lesion enlargement was therefore a measure of rate of virus spread. Lesion size increased as the interval between inoculation and shock treatment increased. The mean rates of increase in lesion radius were 17 and 27 Cμm/h at 15 and 25°C respectively. ‘Target’ lesions, composed of concentric necrotic rings, formed when inoculated Xanthi-nc tobacco leaves were given two or more 50°C shocks. The first of two 50°C treatments decreased subsequent rates of lesion enlargement.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Plasmodium lophurae serine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1) was partially purified and characterized by (NH4)2SO4 fractionation and chromatography on Sephadex G-100. The enzyme, precipitated by 3.0–3.3 m (NH4)2SO4, had a molecular weight of 68,300 as estimated by exclusion chromatography on G-100. The pH optimum of the enzyme was 6.8–7.6 in sodium phosphate-citrate buffer. Citrate stabilized the enzyme during storage in phosphate buffer at 4 C. The Km was 4.3 × 10?3m for l -serine and 2.5 × 10?4m for tetrahydrofolate.  相似文献
