An investigation of sperm ultrastructure in representatives of the marine bivalve families Carditidae (Carditoidea) and Crassatellidae (Crassatelloidea) reveals features o f taxonomic significance. Spermatozoa of Cardita muricata (Carditidae) and Eucrassatella cumingii, E. kingicola, Talabrica aurora (Crassatellidae) differ from the classic aquasperm type in having an elongate acrosomal vesicle and elongate nucleus. In addition, the midpiece region in these species is composed of a distinctive, and here considered t o be apomorphic. arrangement of 8 (rarely 7 or 9), tightly abutted mitochondria grouped around ii dense rod which is continuous with the distal centriole (basal body). A recognizable (i.e. triplet-substructure) proximal centriole is therefore absent in mature spermatozoa of crassatellids and carditids. This situation contrasts with the presence of an unmodified proximal centriole in the spermatozoa o f all other investigated bivalves. Observations on crassatellid and carditid spermatids indicate that the dense r o d is derived through metamorphosis of the proximal centriole. The shared and highly characteristic midpiece features of spermatozoa of the Crassatellidae and Carditidae clearly indicate ii close relationship between these families and support the unification of the Crassatelloidea and Carditoidea into a single superfamily Carditoidea Fleming. 1820 (date priority over Crassatelloidea Férussac. 1822).  相似文献

Ultrastructural features of spermiogenesis and mature spermatozoaare described for the first time in a cirrate octopod. Comparisonwith other investigated cephalopod species shows that spermatozoaof Opisthoteuthis persephone Berry most closely resemble thoseof the genus Octopus. The shared features include: (1) an elongate,solid acrosome with internal banding and a prominent helicalkeel; (2) a straight, rod-like nucleus; (3) a short midpieceand (4) a post-mitochondrial (‘annular’) skirt.Of these, the acrosomal morphology is most significant taxo-nomically,as the internal banding of the acrosomal vesicle only occursin the Octopoda. Spermatozoa of Opisthoteuthis and Octopus differhowever in the extent of the internal banding of the acrosome(poorly developed in Opisthoteuthis) and substructure of theacrosomal keel (more complex in Opisthoteuthis). Surprisingly,the extensive fibrous plug of Octopus and Vampyroteuthis sperm,is not developed either in Opisthoteuthis or in Eledone. Resultsprovide additional support for the monophyly of the Octopodabut also hint at the possibility that some groups of in-cirratesmay not be as advanced as generally believed. Spermatozoa of the pulmonates Helix aspersa Müller andH. pomatia Linnaeus are examined in detail using transmissionelectron microscopy (TEM). Important features such as the acrosome,perinuclear sheath, nucleus and terminal region of the midpieceare described for the first time. Also presented are the firstultrastructural observations on spermatozoa from spermatophoresin any pulmonate gastropod (H. aspersa). No morphological differencescould be found between sperm taken from spermatophores and thosewithin the hermaphrodite duct in H. aspersa. Spermatozoa ofH. aspersa and H. pomatia snow all the characteristics of euthyneuranspermatozoa, namely: a helically-keeled nucleus; distinctivearrangement of acrosomal components (apical vesicle, acrosomalpedestal), and extremely elongate midpiece (axoneme and glycogenhelix enclosed by matrix and paracrystalline layers). The spermnucleus of both species is short, and the midpiece also formsthe terminal portion of the spermatozoon (glycogen piece absent).The extraordinary positioning of the acrosome in H. aspersa—reflectedbackwards from the nuclear apex—is not observed in H.pomatia, though a perinuclear sheath (possibly another acrosomalcomponent) is present in sperm of both species. Helix spermatozoaare compared with other euthyneuran sperm and briefly discussedfrom the systematic viewpoint. The spermatozoon of Tornatina sp. has been studied with phase-contrast light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The head of the spermatozoon consists of an elongate acrosome which caps the apex of an unusually complex, helical nucleus. This elaborate nuclear morphology has not been previously reported, but possibly is found in other opisthobranch gastropod spermatozoa. An axoneme is inserted deeply into the base of the nucleus whilst posterior from the nucleus, the axoneme is ensheathed successively by the mitochondrial derivative (midpiece) and 'glycogen' granules (glycogen piece). The midpiece exhibits fine structure similar to that observed in other euthyneuran spermatozoa (paracrystalline and matrix materials) and possesses a single helical compartment filled with what are probably glycogen granules. A dense ring structure occurs at the junction of the midpiece and glycogen piece. The spermatozoon of Tornatina and other gastropods (prosobranch and euthyneuran) are compared.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and spermatozoa is examinedfor the first time in the heterogastropod family Mathildidae(Mathilda brevicula Bavay and Mathilda sp.). Mathildid spermatozoaexhibit the following features: (1) an ovoid acrosomal vesicleshowing curved dense layers basally and underlain by a thincurved plate; (2) a solid, rod-shaped nucleus showing a shallowbasal invagination (nucleus helically keeled in Mathilda sp.);(3) a midpiece composed of a 9+2 axoneme, 9 thick and periodicallybanded coarse fibres (associated with the axonemal doublets)and a continuous mitochondrial derivative; (5) glyco-gen piececomposed of the axoneme surrounded by dense granules; (6) andend piece (paddle-shaped terminally). Results of the study demonstratethat mathildids share the same key sperm and spermi-ogenic featuresobserved in the Architectonicidae. The monophyly of the Architectonicoidea,established by previous authors on anatomical grounds, is thereforeconfirmed using sperm morphology. Spermatozoa of the two mathildidsinvestigated lack the periodically banded midpiece structuresseen in investigated species of Architectonica (A. pcrspectiva(Linnaeus), A. perdix (Hinds)), Heliacus (H. (Heliacus) variegatus(Gmelin)) and Pseudotorinia (P. laseronorum (Iredale)) therebyresembling most closely the spermatozoaof Philippia lutea (Lamarck)and Psilaxis oxytropis (A. Adams) which also lack suchbandedstructures. Given the widely accepted primitive status of theMathildidae within the Architectonicoidea, the genera Philippiaand Psilaxis may prove to be relatively basal rather than advancedgenera within the Architectonicidae. Thi: view needs to be testedby examination of sperm morphology in other genera of the Architectonicidaeand also the basal mathildid genus Tuba sensu lato (= Gegania+ Tubena).
