Helix texta is endemic to the Mediterranean regions of Israel.It has a seasonal activity pattern which starts in the autumn,with the first rains, and dwindles towards the spring, whenthe snails dig into the ground for a six months long aestivation.A cold spell of 0°C will, however, terminate the activeseason of the adult snail, even in the middle of the rainy season.Survival of the young is very low and most of them (90%) donot survive their first year, because of the winter cold andthe summer drought. Massive predation of adult snails by wild boar was observedin December 1986: within a few days, about 50% of the adultsin the study in the area were eaten. A very rapid growth ofyoung and subadults was observed immediately after this predation.These observations suggest that the extent of recruitment ofnew adults to the population may be partly controlled by existingadults, through a growth-inhibiting pheromone in the mucus.After predation this inhibiting factor disappears, enablinga subsequent rapid growth of the young. In this manner, massive,irregular predation of the adults by a large predator, and changesin juvenile survival, result in sharp fluctuations in the agestructure of the population. The resulting pattern of unstablepopulation dynamics is different from that described for theEuropean species of Helix. (Received 16 January 1989; accepted 17 April 1989)  相似文献

Six different levels of vigour of sorghum seeds from an identicallot were obtained through accelerated aging for various periodsof time. Vigour was estimated according to yielding abilityof the seed in the field. After 6 d of aging, seed invigoration,to the extent of a 20% increase in yield, was observed. However,this was followed by a gradual decrease in yield following agingof up to 48 d. All seed lots showed 88–92% germinationor emergence capacity when tested in the laboratory, which correlatespoorly with vigour. However, vigour correlated well with therates of germination and root emergence when tested in the laboratory,as well as with emergence rate in the field.  相似文献

Sterols of Soil Amoebas and Ochromonas danica: Phylogenetic Approach   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
SYNOPSIS. Sterols of Ochromonas danica, Mayorella palestinensis, Acanthamoeba sp. and Hartmannella rhysodes were examined by thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography. The sterol patterns of O. danica and the amoebas were strikingly similar. Two of the sterols present in both groups, were identified as ergosterol and stigmasterol. This similarity is construed as evidence that "soil" amoebas evolved from phytoflagellates having sterol patterns similar to that of O. danica. An explanation is suggested for the role of ergosterol in phytoflagellates, as originally an ultra-violet-protective agent, then a membrane component.  相似文献

Biochemical Changes in Sorghum Seeds Affected by Accelerated Aging   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Examination of the initial rates of enzyme activities in variousseed lots demonstrated that amylase, glutamic-pyruvic-transaminase,RNase, and glutamate decarboxylase follow the vigour profile,namely, an increase after 6 d of aging treatment followed bya decrease up to 48 d of aging time. Acid phosphatase, tetrazoliumreduction, and [14C]leucine incorporation decline directly withthe time of aging and no increase in those activities at 6 daging could be observed. Proteinase is the only enzyme foundso far that increases during accelerated aging. It is postulatedthat this enzyme may be the cause of the drop in all other enzymeactivities and therefore may play an important role in the lossof seed vigour. Examination of the components released from seeds into water,and of the rates of their leakage, led to the conclusion thatthe efflux reflects severely damaged seeds rather than vigourlessones.  相似文献
