The spatial epidemiology of Bluetongue virus (BTV) at the landscape level relates to the fine‐scale distribution and dispersal capacities of its vectors, midges belonging to the genus Culicoides Latreille (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). Although many previous researches have carried out Culicoides sampling on farms, little is known of the fine‐scale distribution of Culicoides in the landscape immediately surrounding farms. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of Culicoides populations at increasing distances from typical dairy farms in north‐west Europe, through the use of eight Onderstepoort‐type black‐light traps positioned along linear transects departing from farms, going through pastures and entering woodlands. A total of 16 902 Culicoides were collected in autumn 2008 and spring 2009. The majority were females, of which more than 97% were recognized as potential vectors. In pastures, we found decreasing numbers of female Culicoides as a function of the distance to the farm. This pattern was modelled by leptokurtic models, with parameters depending on season and species. By contrast, the low number of male Culicoides caught were homogeneously distributed along the transects. When transects entered woodlands, we found a higher abundance of Culicoides than expected considering the distance of the sampling sites to the farm, although this varied according to species.  相似文献

The proteolytic activity of the leaf extracellular space of wheat cultivars Pigüé and Isla Verde was estimated after inoculation of either detached leaves or plants with the fungus Septoria tritici. Pigüé is resistant, whereas Isla Verde is susceptible to the disease caused by S. tritici. Viable conidiospores of the fungus caused similar increases in both hydrogen peroxide production and chitinase activity of the cultivars studied. In contrast, they caused a decrease in the extracellular serine proteinase activity of Isla Verde and a significant increase in that of Pigüé. Independently of the cultivar from which it was extracted, the extracellular serine proteinase inhibited the germination of Septoria tritici conidiospores. These results suggest that the proteolytic activity of the leaf extracellular space can participate in the defence of wheat plants against Septoria tritici. Its regulation may be controlled by specific defence components of each cultivar.  相似文献

The patterns of colony attendance of male and female Common guillemots, relative to calendar date and relative to the female's laying date during the three weeks prior to egg laying, are presented. The probability of a male being at the colony was consistently higher than that for females. Male attendance peaked in the three days before his mate laid: female attendance was lowest at this time. Examination of the yolk showed that the egg was formed over 14–15 days, with yolk deposition (of first eggs) taking 11–5 days, and a lag period (between the end of yolk deposition and laying) of 3–4 days. Yolk deposition occurred over a shorter period (9–3 days) in replacement eggs, and followed a different pattern from first eggs.  相似文献

Trifolium alpinum L. is a high-quality alpine forage plant growingspontaneously from 1900 to 2800 m above sea level and is widelydistributed in Piedmont and the Valle d'Aosta (Italy), whereit can reach population frequencies of 90 per cent. Yields weredetermined on forage harvested in the Valle dell'Orco (Piedmont)and were comparable to cultivated clovers from higher latitudes;yields decreased progressively as the elevation increased. Thechemical and nutritional characteristics of the forage, thoughcomparable to clovers cultivated in the Po valley (Italy), were,however, more constant. The structure of the leaf lamina asrelated to elevation was investigated using light microscopy,TEM and SEM. This is complemented by data on chlorophyll concentration,succulence, specific leaf weight and area. At all elevationsT. alpinum lacks, apart from bundle sheath cell chloroplastsin a centrifugal arrangement, the structural characteristicsof C4 plants. The chlorophyll a:b ratio (less than four) istypical of a C2 plant. Succulence indices (S and Sm) were verylow, making CAM pathway photosynthesis unlikely. Unusual anddifficult to interpret structures included: small functionalchloroplasts in both the epidermises, stomata present almostexclusively in the upper epidermis and mitochondria enveloped(or enclosed) by chloroplasts. It was observed that, as theelevation increases, populations are selected which are well-adaptedfor gas exchange (increase in specific leaf area, stomatal densityand intercellular spaces) and characterized by a decrease inthe grana thylacoid:integrana thylacoid ratio (consistent withthe increase in the chlorophyll a:b ratio), the per cent water,Sm and the specific leaf weight. PCR detection of MLOs in quick decline-affected pear trees in Italy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification, using primers derived from the 16S rRNA gene, followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with Alu I restriction endonuclease was used to detect myc-oplasma-like organisms (MLOs) associated with pear decline. MLOs were consistently detected in pear trees that suddenly wilted and died within a few days during summer, as well as in pears of the same orchards with symptoms similar to the slow form of pear decline. In both cases the same RFLP pattern was obtained. Declining pear trees were 5 to 8-yr-old cvs Williams, Kaiser and Max Red Bartlett grafted on to Pyrus communis seedling rootstocks. All the orchards affected by quick decline had severe attacks of pear psyllid (Cacopsylla pyri) during the year this study was performed and during the previous year. The results showed the suitability of DNA amplification by the polymerase chain reaction for the detection of pear decline MLOs and established that MLOs can be detected in infected tissues of dead trees.  相似文献
